Wordpress Question: Multiple Instances On A Single Domain? Or Is There A Better Option?
Can anyone help here, and maybe confirm (or suggest) a plan of action?
I have a WP "Tube" blog sitting stagnant. I got bored with it, never finished it, haven't updated it in months. Maybe years. It makes a few bucks every month so I don't really want to strike it. I have another Asian themed project I want to put on that domain - preferably in a seperate folder or subdomain. Would it be better to install another copy of WP in the new subdomain (or folder); or enable multi-user functionality and just run it all from one frontend? I've used WPMU and BuddyPress in the past (older versions), and did NOT have much fun getting them working to my satisfaction (I ain't Harvey or Fris...). I'm leaning towards installing a new WP instance, but if multi-user has improved a lot over the past few years I might try that route. Suggestions? P.S. Scrapping it and starting fresh sounds better now that I've typed things out, but I really don't want the new project on the domain root, so I still have the same problem. |

Star fresh using the multi-user aspect and stick the new stuff on a subdomain... At least that's what I would do.

Wordpress has come a long way since the days of WPMU. In the event you're not aware, multisite functionality has been built into the wordpress core since 3.0; and it's a far cry better now than it was when it was wpmu.
I'd say that if you're dead set on using just the one domain, then go the multisite route using subdomains. And hell, if you plan on starting new sites under different domains.. you can add them into the same multisite installation as well by using the domain mapping plugin. |

I truly believe you're not only selling yourself short, but are also potentially causing a lot of wasted time by doing things the way you are. If either of you (or anyone else for that matter) need help getting it set up, configured and whatnot.. just let me know. |

And there's not even a comparison in terms of speed, server load, features, network exchanging tools and so on

Yepp, definitely wordpress multisite. Not only faster to setup, but also a lot more efficient with daily administration, updates and so on.

I have to disagree with the most replying here so far. If it was my site and plan, I would first make a backup of the database of the original site and all files. Then I would setup a new wp install in a sub folder and see how that works.. It gives some flixiblity for plugins and stuff like that.
Then I would backup the database and all files for the second install. Export the blogs through admin tools - and keep that so you could import to multisite if you decided to go that route. Multi-site is great, but the community is still hashing out some problems with the changeover, especially when it comes to wpmu plugins ans stuff. Also if you have php 4 - when you do the upgrade to php 5 to run WP 3.2 - it may break your multisite - so get make sure php 5 is running on your box before you go for multisite. Mutlistie might be built in, but it takes some vhost changes and other annoying things to get it up and going, not a big deal for some servers - but not so easy with shared hosting. I've had more problems with upgrading multisite / wpmu over the years - supposedly this is all hashed out now that wp and wpmu have merged, and once you get over the php / sql 5 issue - but I do not think it is always that best option for everyone.

1. if you plan on using sub domains over sub directories. 2. if you plan on using domain mapping for use of multiple domains Now, if you want simplicity.. all you need to do is set up a subdirectory installation for the single domain... yes, it's better to use sub domains but if you can't then you can't. Also, while you're half correct regarding plugins... most of those same plugins have been redeveloped for wordpress itself, or alternatives can be found. Not to mention, most of the normal wordpress plugins work with multisite... so long as they've been updated for WP3.0 compatibility anyway. Sure, there are a handful that don't work properly but they are quite rare anymore. |

buy 3000 domains and put blogs on them.. cash will come rolling in...
Funny thing is.... No other investment is going to pay off like blogs... $9 and you are up and running. If it only makes 2 sales for $28 average a year that is $56 - ($9+$5 hosting) = $42 on $9 investment. Makes me wonder why Murdoch isn't in adult! |

You wouldn't need to spend $5 per domain to host

I'm not being facetious - there's no way you could know what I do - and I DO appreciate your input. My hosting is WAY more expensive than that, though. I buy my domains through DirectNic, so my renewals alone cost more than that. The site I'm referring to is on a dedicated server at Amerinoc - and that's not my only hosting account. Actually, its not even my only hosting account at AmeriNoc... I have quite a few. Unfortunately for me, both my WP goto guys are giving me different answers. I think I'm going to avoid multi for now, but set it up on a fresh domain and see if I'm comfortable with it before I screw anything up. I'm rambling because I'm confused, and I have even more to think about now. I'm going to set up multi on a fresh domain - I'll do it this weekend - but I think I'll just add a new WP install to the existing one. Again, I appreciate your replies. You guys just give me too much to think about at once ![]() |
