Who are the big internet marketing gurus ?
The guys who train others on how to market on the net. For example I have been a big fan of Glazer-Kennedy , any others ?

Beware of anyone calling themselves a guru or being referred to as one. Cuz most of the time they are anything but.

most of them peddle shit that they rely on gullable people to buy, the information is often free or invalid.
warriorforums is a very good example.

all these gurus are just marketing fakes. they have spent thousands building huge mailing list and writing professional add copy to get people to buy their stuff. they pray on people who want the easy life and dont want to work for it. Nothing can be done for an hour a day at first.

If you need to advertise yourself as a guru, you probably aren't one...

Oldschool:
Dan Kennedy & Bill Glazer (you already mentioned them) Jay Abraham John Carlton Gary Halbert (RIP) Younger guys: Frank Kern Eben Pagan Mike Filsaime (former used-car salesman, he'll spam you to death ![]() Jeff Johnson Jeff Walker Rich Scheffren Probably a whole bunch more, both oldschool and younger ones I can't remember right off the bat. But many will just regurgitate what the above have to say, albeit with a twist on it. If you want more pointers on whom to check out first and what to look for, feel free to hit me up on ICQ (1566665).

Seth Godin's primarily a theorist. Sure, he may have some real-world experience, but primarily from writing books. The guys I mentioned would wipe the floor with him any day of the week, when it comes to making money first-hand from marketing.

Selling something to stupid people is much easier than educating them.

i think it depends what you are selling and who you want to sell it to.
There is no easy "Read what this guy says and be an expert" solution.

Normally I would agree with you. But not in this case.
See, by the time it occured to Seth that there's such a thing as "permission marketing", people like Gary Halbert and Dan Kennedy had already been doing it practically for decades. Not only them, but others before them had been doing it for decades. AND it had already been written about countless times. Then, one day (in our time) along comes Seth Godin and it FINALLY occurs to him: "Shit, if I got their permission to sell to them, I'd sell more! What a nifty concept!" But instead of actually trying it out, he decides to write a book about it and let the publisher market and sell it. ![]()

The only person I'd call a "guru" doesn't spam his mailing list and other avenues.
He's more of a media buyer these days, though. There's a good chance he's behind a lot of the dieting/fitness ads you see on Facebook. |

[QUOTE=trevesty;18680172]The only person I'd call a "guru" doesn't spam his mailing list and other avenues. [QUOTE=trevesty;18680172]
You mean someone who likes leaving money on the table? ![]() What is your understanding of "spamming" your e-mail list? Sending mails daily, twice a week, weekly? What if the list you have actually WANTS your "spam"? If it really were "spam" then you'd see a shitload of people opting out. The REAL "gurus" split-test this continually, and come up with the most profitable balance between unsubscribing and sales volume. Yes, to increase his list. Yes, to increase his list.

Or they can, but they choose to teach instead, because it's a lot more profitable.

anyone sharing their great secret, has already used it all up, beat it to death and is now selling it to the next idiot, while they wait for their next big scheme to pop into their heads.
if any one truly knew an easy way to get rich they would drive it like the own it, not share it with a bunch of uncreative people on the internet. |

The good gurus are not sharing "secrets", they are teaching good business practices.

I have known a number of Eastern Europeans who had some mad skills when it comes to marketing (particularly with their Black Hat on).

If you are that good at marketing you would not be selling your skills you would be making money from them.
Your best bet is to find someone pretty good that can show you past results. |

Anyone doing media buys and NOT increasing their list (with or without selling something at the same time) is exposing themselves to more risk then necessary AND leaving long-term money on the table. Sure, you can argue some media buyers do really well, for the time being, and they need not build a list. But that doesn't negate the fact that they could be making much more, for a much longer time, if they were to keep building their list at the same time.
