Ultimately the internet was built with guns.

Given that most arguments used in this thread are of a utilitarian nature, I'll take the time to explain the deontological position.

Gandhi, as a lawyer, understood the concept of selfownership. This is the idea that every human being owns his own body. To have a property right in something means that you have the exclusive authority to determine how that resource is used. That means you have the right to use that resource and it also means you have the right to determine who else can or cannot use it. To have a property right means you have the right to enforce that property right. If that weren't the case, the law of the jungle where the strong can force their will on the weak would apply.

Example: a woman can refuse to have sex with a man because she owns her own body. She has the exclusive authority to determine how that resource, in this case her body, is used. If the man tries to rape her, she has the right to defend herself. She has the right to use violence to defend herself.

Gandhi understood that denying people the right to bear arms or in other words denying people the right to use their own property to enforce their property rights was essentially the same as denying people had the right to selfownership.

One short of a troll jackpot. Damn.

Gun laws don't work. The crooks can always get them. It's the people that are the problem. Take away guns from the population, criminals still have them. Take away every gun on earth and people will just stab and beat each other to death. I hate to say it, but humans are still a very immature life form, and all of the violence in our media is not helping matters.

That said, I wonder what the murder rate is in Bhutan?

Ok, make guns illegal. Now what?

* No criminals turn theirs in.
* A small percentage of law abiding citizens turn theirs in.
* A very large percentage of law abiding citizens become criminals over night when they don't turn theirs in. Do you go door to door searching? That will end well.

America is a violence based country, movies, video games, history ... full of people on depressants and other intoxicants. And the amount of wack jobs will rise as the economy tanks. As the media makes celebrities of these idiots expect to see more looking for their 15 minutes of fame.

There are more guns in the US than citizens and they are here to stay. Pack you own or learn to duck real quick.

who said anything about social status? you were comparing countries.

Buy all the guns you want, personally I don't give a fuck, just find it amusing when suddenly comparing favorably to the likes of Zimbabwe, Mexico or the Philippines is a validation of the US's policies.

I'm a lot more concerned that someone texting or talking on their cell phone while driving will kill me than I am about getting shot. And you should be too. Let's outlaw them first. And smoking. And drinking. And fast food. And sugar. And ............

Haven't read all the posts but just want to say something quickly to the Europeans. When you say 'Americans this' or 'Americans that', please note that much of NYC feels the same about middle America as you guys do so don't lump us in with them. I'm not asking that you write out 'Americans except for those who live in NYC yada yada' every time you say something about Americans. So long as you think it, that's fine. Oh, and guns are illegal here and our mayor heads up a national anti-gun campaign.

Exactly my point.

Much of America is on anti-depressants, obese, poisoned, stressed, stuck in dead in jobs, and are more or less unhappy cattle. I'm not surprised at all when someone snaps and kills people. I'm actually surprised it doesn't happen more often.

Gun owners can enjoy guns cause guns can maintain peace in many ways and they might like the gun cause it is nice to have. It is a symbol, and you can shoot empty bottles

It are the idiots who are not having a grip on themselves that should be without gun. But how to filter this?

This is exactly the line of thought the U.S. was founded on. Every man is his own man, and he has exclusive rights to self ownership. Hence, why we have the 2nd Amendment. People outside this country just don't understand it because their countries weren't founded in the same way.

this is mildly amusing for us "Europeans"

at least America is one country, we're used to being lumped together with 50 other countries and nationalities.

Shy of a ban on assault rifles, which may have reduced the number of shots fired in the theater, it is unlikely any laws would have prevented this.

He bought all of his guns and ammo legally, he didn't have a criminal record, he wasn't considered mentally unstable before this incident, etc.

You can't protect society against every lunatic. People are unstable, and no one is a crazy murderer, until they are a crazy murderer.

What if instead of using a gun he waited until a crowd of people assembled outside the theater, and then mowed them all down with a vehicle instead... do you ban vehicles?

Crazy people are crazy. You can't create laws that prevent or protect us from random insanity.

Very good post, but just so you know the word assault has nothing to do with anything. It is still semi automatic. I can click off just as many rounds with a hand gun and a special extended mag of 30 to 40 rounds. Same with shotguns and so on.

What kind of idiot wants to punish all the people that own guns legally because of a psycho that used his illegally?

"There's no such thing as a good gun. There's no such thing as a bad gun. A gun in the hands of a bad man is a very dangerous thing. A gun in the hands of a good person is no danger to anyone except the bad guys."

And for you idiots that would put down Charlton Heston, fuck off, he marched with MLK

And for all you posters that chime in from other countries against the US guns laws. I'm sorry your government doesn't trust you with guns!

think about that

Anti-Depressants - Yes. Primarily Upper East Side females. Good to know for when you're in the mood for that occasional Klonopin.
Obese - Not in Manhattan. Except for the tourists.
Poisoned - I don't what this means but I'll just go ahead and say probably yes. What kind of poison?
Stressed - Yes, but generally the good type of stress that fuels ambition.
Stuck In Dead End Jobs - Sure, but the qualified are not without option. It's no different than Paris, London, etc.

Just be thankful that you're not from Central America, South America, or Spain in which case you would be 'Mexican'! lol That's like referring to all Europeans as 'Pollocks'.

You have always been stripped of your individual power in Europe where you were ruled by kings based on their blood line.
You are conditioned to be subservient weaklings.

Hitler would have ran you people over if it were not for Russia and America.
But you fail to see how America became powerful enough to save you.

You remained under the power of your overlords yet you can't figure out why.

If it were not for Russia and America? You Americans joined about 3 years into the battle! Only because the Germans were up and down your water ways blowing up your ships did you decide to join in fully.

You don't have as many black there as we do here. Your very fortunate in that regard.

Colorado banned guns in movie theatres and schools. They then had mass shootings in ... movie theatres and schools.

There has never, in the history of the world, been a mass shooting at a gun range, where everybody is able to protect themselves and those around them.
Damn that's a lot of retarded bullshit you just said, you do know that legal gun owners aren't action movie stars, right? The guy threw tear gas, had a vest and there were tons of people running for their lives and it was dark. You think they all could have shot him? You live in a fantasy world.

Government is the problem, not the solution.

People are idiots if they think the government is capable of "saving" them from anything.

Those Who Sacrifice Liberty For Security Deserve Neither.

This is 2012 not 1939?

History always repeats itself you fool, there is always a possibility of tyranny overtaking this great nation, and the 2nd Amendment was put there specifically to give the American people a fighting chance against something like that.

"The strongest reason for people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." -- (Thomas Jefferson)

"The right of the people to keep and bear...arms shall not be infringed. A well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the best and most natural defense of a free country..." (James Madison, I Annals of Congress 434 [June 8, 1789])

"Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom of Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any bands of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States" (Noah Webster in 'An Examination into the Leading Principles of the Federal Constitution')

"To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of people always possess arms, and be taught alike especially when young, how to use them." (Richard Henry Lee)

"...to disarm the people - that was the best and most effectual way to enslave them." (George Mason, 3 Elliot, Debates at 380)
