Customers "gaming" the sign up page

I have an ethics question:

On my site I have multiple payment options.

One of them is "$15.99 for 6 months".
Another is "$9.99 for 12 months".

Some people sign up for the 12 month option, pay $9.99, but then they almost immediately cancel so they get one month at $9.99, and don't have to pay the higher price.

Should I:

1) Continue to charge $9.99 a month and allow them to cancel anytime.

2) Charge $119.88 (all 12 months) as soon as they sign up so when they cancel I still get their money for all 12 months.

It's not my bread and butter site and either way I don't get lots of sales...just a though on what you would do.

Depends. If the product is general enough, do you want less money from more people or more money from fewer people?

Personally, I'd prefer $1.00 from everyone on the planet over $10,000 from 10,000 people. Just sayin'.

No no, the question is "Do I charge everyone upfront" rather than on a monthly basis until the end of the term.

It's a mainstream site, not a porn site. Did I think porn surfers are different than mainstream? Yes. Do I really care? No.

Ie: less than 4 sales per month and that's about 4 more than I expected. :-) So far the site has been up about 3 months so I really am not pushing it. At 4 sales per month, I think it has plataued on how much work I will put into it.

Here is the site since everyone will now ask for it.

Sometimes letting people think they are gaming something can be the best marketing tool.

I ran a couple wallpaper websites in high school. Did quite well with them. If you wanted to, I'm sure you still could.

Sounds like you need to do some testing on your join page. Test which offers are doing best, retaining longer as well as converting initally at a higher rate. Then test some new options against it to find your true price point sensitivity of your customers. You can increase the acceptance and rebill rates by testing different offers. They do matter.
