If Israel has laws about what you can name your baby.... or yourself, in the case of this issue, then I disagree with that. Like I said in my original post, "This applies to the US in some ways also". I don't blindly support ANY government. They are ALL abusive of personal liberty, the US has become one of the WORST! It's the nature of government to always grow in power and reach, and unless it is actively held in check, then it will continue indefinitely.

True, I keep on forgetting that we are the ones that ACTUALLY run the world over the other 99.8% of the people....

I'll get right on that!

Really? In attacks made on a Jewish boy in school in Norway, included being burned with a hot brand right in class, he was told "he must stay clear of Norwegian and Muslim children and hide his parentage to avoid continued anti-Semitic attacks.? by the Norwegian government.

Hiding his parentage could easily include being forced to change his name, couldn't it? After all, if it ok to save someone from "embarrassment", then how much more vital would it be to save someone from physical attack?

No, I am not trolling and I am serious. What kind of life do you live that you think it is appropriate that the government step in at birth to protect you from being teased?

Do you feel like the barbarians are at the gate when you hear those sorts of names?

The ironic thing is you probably consider yourself a champion of free choice and freedom of expression.

My point exactly - it looks like the law in the US (just like everywhere else) regulates what names you could and could not have. It makes perfect sense to me. It also makes perfect sense that these laws would vary from one country to another...

You missed the point of the entire thread, which was the government being able to limit what you can name your child. But yes, some inner city ghetto names are totally retarded. And assuming the child ever makes it out of the hood, it may harm them later in life. You can bet the farm that "Bon Qui Qui" is doomed out of the gate, while "DeShawn" actually has a chance.

Actually, the point of the thread was that an intelligent teenager, who was given a name THAT SHE ACTUALLY WANTS, is being forced to change it by a government. This is not an infant being "burdened" with some crazy name by it's parents....

I didn't miss the point. I was pointing out that some folks seem to agree that there should be limits on what a person can name his or her self, and I disagree with that on any level, but especially when it comes to racial stereotypes of naming conventions.

You don't think governments should protect children from abusive parents? Regardless what that abuse is?

Do you think it is perfectly OK for anyone to call their child anything they want? Anything at all?

Do you not think governments should protect children from abuse, even if it is from their parents? Or should parents be able to do what they want to other humans, just because they actually managed to learn to have sex?

My point is that if you think it's ok for the government to deny a teenager, (in this case), or even an adult, from choosing their own name, (which is what this whole thread is actually about), as a by product of a law created in the name of "protecting" children from parents giving them a name that other kids will tease them about. By using your logic, wouldn't it be right to "protect" children from parents giving them a name that other kids will ATTACK them for?

Hopefully I will have raised him to not be swayed or hurt by the opinions of small-minded provincial people that cling to prejudice. Hopefully he will be proud of his name, and glad that it isn't the same old thing as everyone else around him, (except if we are living in Israel, it's not that uncommon of a name there), but if he wishes to change it, he will be free to when he is older.

the problem is that you will always find 1 in 1 million cases that serves your intention of this thread - but in the other 999,999 times it saves 999,999 kids from being made fun of.

we'll never agree on this.

Why is that so wrong? They have a list and if your name is not on it they allow you to petition. She lives in a country that only uses the first name for most stuff and it denotes the sex. They don't have unisex names. It makes sense and is simple. The priest goofed up so undo the mistake don't make a huge deal out of it.

We have rules about names. Prince had that issue when he tried to be a symbol. The name needs to be approved in the USA also but we are a lot more liberal and the kid suffers not the parent who wanted to be original. I just met an Amari-yi. She will need to set a side a few minutes a day to explain her name to people. Yep, nothing ethnic or anything, grandma thought it was cool is all.

I guarantee you someone with a name that is impossible to know how to spell or even pronounce correctly will not have the same chances in corporate America as someone named Carol.

And no it doesn't affect me but I can guarantee I would have shifted someone with the name "Shamecca Tenesha Jackson" to the bottom of the resume pile. And no doctor named "Metta World Peace" is going to operate on me.

Black culture is one thing, handicapping your child at birth is another.

Black culture is one thing, handicapping your child at birth is another.

fingers crossed

Do you feel like the barbarians are at the gate when you hear those sorts of names?

The ironic thing is you probably consider yourself a champion of free choice and freedom of expression.

i don't care what someones color, sex, sexual preference, name or physical size is ? I'm just saying you don't do your children any favors by giving them names from left field.

No, you blindly support a morally bankrupt, dogmatic political ideology that embraces a ridiculous and selfish philosophy against government intervention at all points no matter what the cost, disregarding the social and political compact among Americans, which it equates with liberty. That is just as bad, if not worse, than blindly supporting a government.

Let me explain something to you: The United States is a republic, Sperbonzo - YOU ARE THE GOVERNMENT. If you feel that YOUR government has failed to achieve worthy goals, or pursued goals that are unworthy, there is a fundamental remedy in YOUR republican, representative government. You can engage with other like-minded people and attempt to transform YOUR bad government into better government. That's your only fucking hope.

Or you can continue to complain on internet message boards about how hell is other people, some of who want different shit than you yet are citizens of the same nation-state.

OR - and this is probably the most ideal option - you can pack your shit up and move to Somalia or Waziristan. Go to one of those libertarian utopias in Africa or the Middle-East where you'll be free from government interference and you can petition a local warlord for your grievances. Not only that but you'll be able to open-carry not only handguns, but rocket launchers and AK-47s and all kinds of other cool shit.

Agreed. Someday these people will have to fill out job applications. “Aquanetta” is not going to get them the clerkship at the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. Some people can’t give a thought to their child’s name past words that sound nice to them in the seconds after giving birth.

I'll bet you D'Brickashaw Ferguson wishes we had some laws like these. Fucking D’Brickashaw... I mean come on.

D’Brickashaw Ferguson wound up with that unfortunate name because his mother had like the character of De Bricassart on the 70’s miniseries "The Thorn Birds". But she could'nt be bothered to research the proper spelling of “De Bricassart,” either by checking the novel "The Thorn Birds" out of the library - a novel that one would assume a fan so dedicated to "The Thorn Birds" to name her firstborn after one it its characters would be interested in reading – either by reading the novel, or researching printed materials ABOUT "The Thorn Birds" television miniseries, or picking up the VHS release of the miniseries that one would assume such a dedicated fan would want to own, and reading the back of the box, or looking at said VHS case in a video store.

She was so passionate about "The Thorn Birds" that she named her child after De Bricassart, but could not do any of these things. She could merely blurt out a half-remembered slur of syllables to some semi-literate nurse in the deep South when asked what do you want to name your baby, as though it would never be brought up again. Now tens of millions of people have to read the word “D’Brickashaw” when his player stats pop up on the bottom of the TV screen every week, and think “what the fuck?” Or more likely some racist sentiment. If she had taken two seconds to get it right then, or at any time thereafter in his first eighteen years of life, or if anyone in her orbit had been a fan of "The Thorn Birds" and corrected her, or if the government would've stepped in and said, "no, that's fucking retarded" - the world could have been spared. But no. Fucking “D’Brickashaw.”

ID is issued by a government and you claim that government should have no say in the matter?

What about Dumbfuck? Do you have a limit and we are both on the same side but fighting about degrees?

Dumbfuck is not directed at you but an example of a name that most people would agree is abusive.

I agree it is dumb but I find it hilarious when some Americans act shocked and see it as an "attack on peopels fredoms" ..

well,have you seen this site?

http://www.dumblaws.com/laws/united-states

lots and lots of dumb laws in USA. I'm willing to bet USA (its states etc)has the highest amount of dumb laws from any developed country.

just searching for "dumb laws usa" in google gets you millions of results..

here is more condensed:

http://tjshome.com/dumblaws.php

I cant say all are true but even if 10% is it is dumb beyond reason..

http://www.dumblaws.com/law/1944

stuff like that makes that iceland laws sound not that crazy..

before someone says iceland is country and in US it is states - well, entire population of iceland is just 300 000 people.

A license plate is not the same as a person, in case you had not figured that out yet.

When you learn to spell, you can start discussing whether or not something is stupid/dumb.

Just in case you have Alzheimer's, I will point out that its not the question I ask. And just in case it?s late case of Alzheimer's I would like to remind you, we are talking about governments limiting right, not if itc a person or a car.
So should ask the question again in slow motion? Is there law against having licence plates "Slow Old Dog" or "Anthrax"?
