Math Gurus Please Explain: Why Do Sales Go Down Over Time?

This question is mostly for those with tube site experience but could apply to other sites and links, too (Blogs, TGPs, etc).

I've noticed that when I submit a video to a tube and it gets, say, over 100k views in the first day sales are "consistent" - meaning the conversion rate for that site's Tour is holding steady and I got 10 sales.

Now, let's move forward a week. That same video now has 300k views! WooHoo! THREE TIMES the views on the first day. Sure, the video dropped off the Homepage and is now "buried" 10 pages down, but obviously the video is still getting views every day. So what about sales?

Weirdly, sales drop to almost non-existent! In the above example that first day the vid gets 100k views and 10 sales. By week's end the views triple but the additional sales are.....2.

Move forward a MONTH and that same video now has 850k views. Sales from 100k-850k views? 3.

So a total of 15 sales in a month with the same video getting 850k views.

10 sales Day 1
12 sales end of Week 1
15 sales end of month 1

Why does this happen? I have videos with MILLIONS of views but the sales mysteriously either stop altogether after a day or two or they trickle in thereafter. Obviously my vids (some of them) people LOVE and are still viewing years after I've uploaded them but you would think sales, while down from the initial posting, would be "steady" thereafter.

Nope. Why?

Edit: Perhaps the people who were interested already bought it, perhaps also content is no more unique as well.

Just my 2 uneducated theories.

1. People that are gonna buy, see something new, then go ahead and buy. They want to see it now. All the later views, May be people just cruising the free stuff.

my tinfoil theory.
2. One of your first sales was somebody that has ripped your video series and uploaded the whole video series somewhere else on the tube.

I like both of these reasons, thank you.
(#2 is not necassarily a conspiracy theory but rather a cons & piracy theory because it absolutely happens.)

There is only a finite amount of people who are going to see your content.
There is also only a finite amount of people who will want to pay for it.
So, in theory it will always decline.

Depends if you gain traffic or new streams of traffic aswell obviously, then it will go up, then drop off again.

The traffic coming to the front pages is usually better. More than likely there is more SE traffic there.

More of the traffic coming to the archived areas is likely bots and people who have done deep searches. They may have seen hundreds of other videos that session and a few dozen of your other videos.

It could be the tubes playing with the numbers for old videos too in order tog et people to keep submitting. I wouldn't rule that out either for some of them.

Good replies so far. Add in

- Repeated views from surfers who now have it in their "favorites"
- Educated surfers who know how to search and less likely to buy
- Embeds with huge views from lower productive countries
- Inflated views added to archived content to entice advertisers

So,

100k views - 1 day , 300k views - 7 days . Difference 200k views over a 6 day period so that is 33k views per day versus 100k per day

850k views - 30 days , means 850 - 200 = 650 over 30 - 7 = 23 days so that is 650k over 23 days = 23k per day ...

100k = 10 sales, that is one sale in 10k, 15 sales over 850k that is 1 sale at 56k views which is quite good I'd say given the current times and the fact that is probably on a free porn tube.

Keep in mind how many of that 850 are unique...

If you want the theory start here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_tail

by the way, I love your post and how you actually ask the right questions, from a program owner point of view...

No idea. Maybe after home page the views become more saturated with purchased junk traffic which is resold to advertisers as impressions at a premium.

If you're sales are going down, than you're doing something wrong.

This is not a slam on you, this is simply talking about building a sales funnel. If you are not always adding in new traffic sources, more data, and working to fill up the sales funnel, you will find sales dropping off. If you have some basic sales or marketing experience, it would more a less explain this more in detail.

A lot of folks simply get lazy and complacent versus build build build. You also have changing trends and technologies in the mix. However, if you're not constantly filling your sales funnel, you will eventually start to see a drop.

Why does this happen?
With numbers like that it smells like shaving (but perhaps not the sponsor).

Also those of your visitors who buy stuffs went perhaps already there.

Great thread, I've noticed the exact same phenomenon. Most of the theories above are right on in some combination IMO.

This, this, this, across all industries/markets/fields/whatever. I really need to set aside an official minimum hours per day/week set aside for marketing, because it's so easy to coast on what you've got & focus on the more enjoyable aspects of business... but the drop always comes unless you keep at it constantly.

The most valuable sales you get are type-ins. Those are hard to track.

Great posts, thank you! Yes BF this is true - I've been 'experimenting' with (tweaking, trying this and that) my employees and the work they do (how much, to whom, etc) and while traffic has remained steady my own focus has been on this and not 'marketing' (per se). This is changing and thus threads like these from me.

One basic thing is for sure, and I've noticed this the almost 5 years I've been doing this adult game: unless you are CONSTANTLY FEEDING THE BEAST (the internet) YOU WILL BE IN DECLINE.

Agreed. I think we are all targeting busy people with jobs that don't have time to search all day to find the perfect fap material or download a torrent.
