I've been working for a retail supermarket in management for over 5 years. I developed a web app that enabled associates to sync their schedule to their iPhone/Android. In less than a week over 200 associates were using this program. Instead of the company saying wow this is awesome can you show us how to do it? | They say they've already been working on something similar and I breached their "Technology Agreement". Resulting in my immediate termination. All while there are members of management that have been CAUGHT stealing, with no repercussion. What the fuck is wrong with this world?

Not a penny, the company is employee owned. It was solely a project to benefit it's associates.

If not you can at least get unemployment since you most likely live in an at will state.

Doesn't sound right. If you were in management, I don't understand why you wouldn't have brought up your app at a meeting, and why you were unaware an app was already under development.

That aside, I'm surprised that you were fired, given your time with the company, and the supposed nature of your offense (creating a productivity tool).

I'm guessing there may be more to the story, for example, you accessed company files/code which you were not authorized to have access to, developing/promoting app on company time, or something of that sort.

Otherwise, you may have a case for wrongful termination.

I would want to know specifically what rules were broken and the exact reason(s) for the termination, and then I would probably contact a lawyer if I felt my rights were violated.

Whatever the case, good luck...

If it was my company I wouldn't want someone accessing any part of my operating system that wasn't part of that persons immediate job or area of responsibility. I'd fire you too.

If it were me, I might start calling stores and telling them about my app then finding out which of them have software that will work with it. You could make a few extra bucks with just a few phone calls.

You will find out that their software is just a branded version of the same software used by thousands of companies. I would shop the app to smaller companies. I would also sue for wrongful termination. They may choose to settle with you out of court and pay you a year of salary. A good friend of mine just did and she got six months salary and two years guaranteed employment in another department with full benefits her old job didn't supply. She was shocked. Said she did it more out of spite. Didn't think they'd actually cave in.

I think that depends on the contract and terms he had with the company. I have worked for companies in the past that forced you to sign something that said any inventions you may come up with or anything you might develop they have the right to claim since you work for them. Still, there were several guys that freelanced and did software development on their own.

Since he made it to work for this specific company they might claim it, but he could change it a little, alter the name of it and rebrand it as something else he would probably be in the clear. Especially if he can prove that he didn't develop it while on the company clock.

Companies/businesses do not like people poking around in their infrastructure without permission to do so .... plain and simple.

Here in Canada, a graduate student in a large university was working on an app that would allow students to get their schedules and updates/revisions right on their smartphones, and while developing this app, he uncovered a MAJOR vulnerability in the school's network.

He immediately took his findings to the school, and instead of thanking him for this, he found himself expelled from the school, for a breech of the technology agreement that he signed when he started to attend the school six years prior.

it sounds like you put internal documents (employee schedules) on the web without anyone's approval first, possibly breaking some privacy or some other laws in the process...

your employer has no way of knowing how secure your setup is, what other documents could be accessed, etc... so it's not exactly surprising that they are pissed...

consult an attorney, most will give you a free consultation and see if there is a case. if not, see if you can get unemployment, and angle it towards the tech field. seem to have a liking for it and its apps. good luck. been there. happens to the best of us.
