Should flash be deprecated now that it was abandoned for linux?

As adobe said that it will not produce any new version of Flash for linux, do you think webmasters should stop using it as it will make content unviewable if the user is using linux?

Should we stop using flash on our websites for this reason?

I think that stop making Flash for linux is a very risky movement for adobe, as it's product will be less and less compatible, and, websites are not made to be used only on one system, but to be used in any system or device.

Adobe made some pretty serious mistakes when they bought Macromedia. They killed shockwave in favor of Flash and now Flash has seen it's best days long gone by. Meanwhile back before they killed shockwave, they had probably the most advanced browser based gaming engine on the net and the failed to realize it.

Had they invested in shockwave, they would have owned the 3d browser based game market and it would have just now been coming into it's prime. Instead they killed shockwave due to lack of future vision and now flash is on it's death bed..

I'm just amazed they couldn't see this coming.

Newer Android and all Apple iOs do not support Flash. These tablets and smartphones are half the operating systems on the Internet.

HTML5 is where it's at.

Shockwave wouldn't have surpassed what can be done in HTML5 and Flash is heading the way of the Dodo.

I use linux and flash is working fine. On the next updates of FF and Chrome the plugins will be disabled by default since the plugins cause memory leaks or even put the systems at risk sometimes allowing malware. HTML5 can replace flash and most browsers are HTML5 compatible. I think one of the reasons that google won't like the video embeds is that most are just flash objects that are not available on many devices and the webpage become just a farm full of ads.

Flash is already deprecated. Almost everyone has moved on to html5. OS support has nothing to do with it. Flash is a relic.

OK, but why is youtube still using it?

* I'm not implying that it proves anything that youtube is using flash, just wondering why they still do with all the staff they have to replace it.

Yes that is a key problem, there is still a lot of web sites powered by flash.Tho,it seems youtube now finally have working player fail over, before a lot of videos for some reason were working only on flash.

The browsers may have made the switch to HTML5; but it'll be a while before I'm writing awesome code in HTML5 that I can write in Flash.

People like me spend years learning Flash and then get thrown out like trash.
It's pretty exhausting.

This was a Flash programmers path :

1. Learn AS1
2. No job because everyone is switching to AS2 before you get "2 years experience"
3. Learn AS2
4. No job because everyone is switching to AS3 before you get "2 years experience"
5. Learn AS3
6. No job because Flash is dead before you get 2 years experience.
7. Learn HTML5
8. No job because nobody is really sure that Flash is dead.

It was first in the cascade with the newer HTML5 as fallbacks. Hell, Netflix is still using Silverlight -- Microsoft's Flash "killer app"

We still detect flash = 0,1 and will offer flash were available for now. Flash is still smoother than HLS for streaming live video -- the tween makes the difference.

However, there are new HTML5 streaming technologies coming out shortly -- their will be a major shake out soon

"flash" from the GFY no-so-wayback machine -- anybody want to eat their words?

The old ways the casual public uses the internet with PCs are over.

And it just took 4 years or so -- but that was predicted ... I see the stats to prove it every day and there are public usage statistics available out there that say the same thing. So what I am seeing daily is not an anomaly and pretty much following the trend.

I never though that cams would go over on the tiny screen ( great for jo in the head maybe) but the tablet screen size is more mainstream and that is the real target for us. As far as general video use, whether Youtube or Porn video, tablets are the new target to hit -- if you don't you are a dinosaur in a few years the way things are trending.
Guess where the world is ...

This is 100% true. Tho I'm sure Flash is dying and will die if Adobe doesn't do something. When they didn't put out a 64bit version for Linux long ago I realize it was going down the drain. That was my first hint. Now browsers freeze and crash due to it. Unless they put some effort in making it better, I see HTML5 replacing it in the upcoming years. But who knows, maybe I'm wrong.

What i noticed in our cam sites it is: most of free users use android, like 50% or more of traffic of freebies. Pay users more like PC, Mac or ipads with large screen. Most people go in private from PC or Mac, however same users will login from iphone and android at other time of the day just to chat girls or I guess a quickie. We have an older cam site that work only with Flash, the only people who complained used ipads, not android small cells anyway.

I think adobe should ditch flash protocol completely ,i mean they dont make any money with it,dont they? They make money by selling a program to write flash scripts.
And yes, probably 99% of browsers crashes are caused by flash. And when it comes to replacing,i would love to see HTML5 to replace everything what it can replace, meaning not just desktop apps, mobile apps as well.Imagine a single programming language to cover all those aspects. One day it might happen, but it is definitely slow process even if you have big player behind it,for example valve now pushing hard linux gaming but no effect on it yet.

Most newer TV's, phones and even this forum are powered by Linux. I think people still use it. Most windows computers are part of some botnet, or are full of adware, toolbars and other crap.

Android is a LINUX kernel

Most of my workstations here are LINUX.

My windows 7 is a necessary toy. Some software is not ported for LINUX. Most of the government networks in Europe and Asia are LINUX/UNIX -- no backdoors for the FBI or the NSA.

So if you count Android, and if you don't believe me, go to the root directory of a smartphone, tablet or netbook running Android then check out the root directory of a PC running LINUX and you will see they are "cousins." Same family traits but a few attributes are changed.

When you take this into account -- The LINUX kernels are powering 1/3 or more of the user devices out there. Microsoft was right -- LINUX is a cancer and LINUX has gone metastatic (thanks to Google and Android).

[1]Another 10 or 20 years Microsoft will be a foot note in computing history.

Adobe cut support May 6, 2014 for Flash in Android Jelly Bean 4.x.x
You are losing traffic then because most of them will not see your cams.

You can install a "dropbox" workaround file to force flash to install manually to an Android smartphone or a tablet. How many of these users are going to do this? It is a nonofficial file ... http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/go...sh-on-android/ Personally, I have Flash in Android but its in an old 2.3.4 I hardly use.

The users don't complain -- they just go somewhere else where they can see the cams ... You lose the traffic -- maybe some potential sales.

Tubecamgirl.com supports html and flash (if flash not detected, tries HSL), but while Apple HLS plays in iphones and ipads, the HLS via HTML5 is not playing in most Android versions, some of which can miss Flash too, so these can play nothing live in any site:

http://www.overdigital.com/2013/07/1...ls-on-android/
http://www.streaminglearningcenter.c...solutions.html

HLS issues continue on android 4.4 (it plays worst than on older android):
https://code.google.com/p/android/is...etail?id=63346

So while HTML5 HLS is ok for iphone/ipad, I would warn anyone thinking HTML5 HLS will play on all (or even most) Android devices, old, present and future. (PS: Do not confuse with playing mp4 prerecorded files which work in every Android).

So much out there still uses flash. Unfortunately. As for Linux hopefully Firefox and others will work on ways to integrate pepper flash which is still getting updated. In my Arch install I had to execute just a few CLI commands to enable it in my chromium. I guess there already is something to get working in Firefox but it's currently in a hackish state.

And, yes, fuck Adobe and fuck flash. The sooner it is fully replaced with an open solution the better. I jsut hope it isn't out of the frying pan and into the fire though where we move to something even worse and more proprietary.

Ugh,a flash game which i play every day i cannot play anymore because "my flash version is outdated".Tho,it seems google chrome somehow manage to provide latest flash version for linux, while firefox and other browsers are stuck with version 11.
