Why are they called "cold" sores when you can get them in bloody August ?

You get them in August because the sun is a major trigger. If you're going to be out in the sun, make sure you have minimum SPF 30 chapstick on at all times for your lips and the rest of your face use a normal sunscreen.

Also see your doctor for Valtrex (Valacyclovir generic) 500MG pills and keep them handy. The moment you start to feel a coldsore coming, take 4 pills (2 Grams) and take another 4 pills 12 hours later. The "live" sore time will be greatly reduced and new sores most probably won't develop. It'll cut the worst part down to maybe 2 days with healing starting on the 3rd. Significantly shorter than without.

Valtrex can also be taken as a preventative measure. 1 pill a day in the morning. This is especially useful if you are say planning a beach vacation or have an important function coming up.

Lastly, compromised immune system (already sick, fighting something else) and stress are also major triggers and combining them adds to the likelihood you'll develop an outbreak. So if you're stressed out about something and in the sun without sunscreen, you're asking for trouble.

Well, these past 2 or 3 days? Yeah stress could easily be a factor.

Yes, that's the grade 2 answer I guess. You can get HSV2 in your mouth from oral sex, but MOST cases are HSV1.

All herpeses are STD's. Although there are multiple things those cause mouth infections, besides the herpes (not STD's). Based on googling "cold sores" are caused by herpes.

go steam some rice and afetr the rice gets cooked, grab a cotton ball and use it to absorb some of the condensed steam hanging on the underside of the rice cooker's lid. Apply that to sore. Works immediatey first time but may need a second application should the area be badly irritated already. Thank me later.

They are in the same family as Varicella(Chicky Pox) and Herpes Zoster(shingles) but are different animals. Same meds to knock it down though.

I have Shingles now and have been on acyclovir for almost a week. I don't recommend getting that shit but anyone who has had chicken pox can get it and it can(but not easily) give chicken pox to people who have never had pox or the vaccine.

BTW get the Shingles vaccine and have your kids get the chicken pox vaccine. Cuts the duration and pain down immensely.

When you feel one coming on, use ice cubes and keep it there as much as possible for a couple of days. I had a cold sore one time, and it was a tough 2 weeks. Somebody told me the ice cube trick, and I haven't had one since -- as long as I can catch it early.

It sucked trying to eat, but the worst part was the feeling I had walking around my workplace with it. Thankfully, I had just started growing a beard.

Fun fact...about 80 to 90% of people carry the herpes simplex virus. Not all of them will see it pop up in their lifetime.

Going to get 3 shots of Gardasil beginning next month. It is a vaccine for some of the most common forms of genital herpes. It protects you such that you can have sex with somebody who has a common form of herpes (most ppl don't know they have it) and you will not get infected.

But if you already have genital herpes, getting the vaccine won't do anything for you.
