Medellin Colombia and zika virus...Please help!

I know there are a few of you guys here that work in Colombia and was hoping you may have some insight on whats going on there. My ex wife wants to take our 9 year old daughter with her to Medellin Colombia this summer for a 2 week vacation to see family. Normally this would not be an issue with me but several weeks ago I read that the zika virus was QUICKLY spreading in S America. I was wondering if any of you guys could shed some light on how wide spread this virus is in Medellin? And if anyone else has read or knows the possible effects this virus could have on a child? I obviously know its horrible for unborn babies but whst about the young and adults? I asked my ex but I dont trust her at all. Thank you in advance.

I had Zika 5 months ago. Didn't know it was Zika at that time. I was working hard and just kept going. Some stiff hands and feet, but i just thought it was because of hard working. 1 day some red spots on my chest. And a week later it was al gone. A lot of people got it later also, most of them sick for a few days and than it was gone. More a light form of denque / fever.

Here in Brazil there is less news about Zika lately. Except that there is a connection between zika and handicaped babies.

Hey bjorn,
So it seems for you it was like having the flue and then after a while you were fine. Thats great news and im happy you got over it quickly. I still wonder if this would have any other effects on children other then just being sick for a while.
Thanks for taking the time to share!

Zika has been around for +50yrs. Nothing crazy about it. Like a severe flu.
Medellin is not tropical enough, so she'll be fine. The handicapped babies connection has been refuted. There is none. It's actually pesticides in drinking water that are to blame for that. Mostly used in, you guessed it, Brazil.
You're welcome.

This

Only the areas were insecticide have been added to the drinking water are seeing the birth defects, Columbia isn't seeing problems despite having Zika. Also ignore anything the CDC says as it's is an industry captured agency

There is a connection between Zika and the handicapped babies yesterday scientist from the USA confirmed. So i wouldn't take that risk.

"Based on a growing body of preliminary research, there is scientific consensus that Zika virus is a cause of microcephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome.".

That syndrome is nothing new, you can get that even with a small fever or any other infection. The things in the drinking water i would be worried about also in Brazil. I always get drinking water from bottles.

WHO | Zika virus and complications: Questions and answers

But a healthy child of 9 years old mustn't have much problems. I advice to use anti-mosquito spray tough.

some link zika to brain damage in adults as well. Fact is there is still not much known about it. And that it completely fucks up the brain of unborn children says to me that it could be a bit more harmful then just a flu for some adults, but especially children of 9 where their brain is still growing.

In short if i had kids i would not go near a zika infected country with them. Why risk the health of your kids?

There was a full page in the local newspaper here why Zika is not responsible for those things. Don't remember all the details. But one of the main ones was that most of the mothers of babies with microcephaly never had Zika to begin with. Why the WHO is spreading this misinformation? No idea.

If you read some of the "answers" on that page for the questions marked with "new", you realize there it's a lot of speculation and they don't actually know what they're talking about.

Yes, a lot of speculation. And we know how much the medicine industry made with the Mexican Flu.... The medicine did more harm than that flu..

I followed it about the things in drinking water in Brazil if that could be the cause. It is in the interest of a lot of people (the Brazil government) that there isn't a problem with the water. They put chemicals in it that could cause the micro heads also some people think.
The WHO just came with this information cause some scientist discovered the relation last week. I think we need to wait a few months to see if the micro heads are also in countries like Colombia and Suriname. I got it in Paramaribi, but there where a lot of mosquitos there. Where i am now there aren't many.

idiot: when you go on vacation you can choose where you go. So you can take the kids to a zika country or a country without zika. What would you choose? Sierra Leone so they have a chance at catching ebola?

there plenty of people that live there. some never come in contact with zika. because they control the pest! idiot?? one is transmitted from a parasite. the other from human carriers. apples and oranges. you are confusing yourself.

Spray anti mosquito cause when i was there i think 25% of the people got Zika. Ps, never seen so many fucked up, crazy, fraudulant and corrupt people like there. Saw it is getting even worse there with the crisis now. If you are looking for models, maybe i know someone who can help you.

Looks like im a bit late on the discussion.. but here is what i got to say about it.. Its based on a small research i had my assistant to for me.. Since we also had a few people inquire about this due our Upcoming expo.. here you go:

The Zika virus is no an impediment to travel to Colombia and attend Lalexpo. The virus emerged in Uganda (Africa) and appeared 70 years later in Latin America (2014).

Symptoms
Fever, rash, joint pain, or conjunctivitis (red eyes). Other common symptoms include muscle pain and headache.

It is not true:
- Does not spread by sneezing.
- It does not spread from person to person by kissing or greet hand.
- It is not sexually transmitted.
- Does not spread through breastfeeding.
- Do not spread by using cutlery and / or dishes from a person with the disease.
- It is not transmitted by food in warm or hot earth.

It is true:
- The virus is transmitted by the mosquito Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti
- Can be transmitted from mother to unborn child.
- If you get the virus you must to rest, hydration and management of fever with acetaminophen.

Recommendations:
- Use repellents approved by the EPA insect repellents.
- Drinking water treated, filtered and / or bottled.

The Zika virus is now being locally transmitted in Aruba, Barbados, Bolivia, Bonaire, Brazil, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Curacao, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Martinique, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Saint Martin, Suriname, U.S. Virgin Islands, Venezuela, American Samoa, Samoa, Tonga and Cape Verde,
The Aedes albopictus, or Asian tiger mosquito, which along with Aedes aegypti transmits Zika virus, is present in many parts of the United States.
In Colombia specially Cartagena the Dadis Says: ?The cases have been declining due the Elimination of breeding sites for the Aedes Aegypti mosquito transmitter of the disease?

Travel to Colombia and attend Lalexpo is 100% safe, so here we are waiting!
