Let me try to give another example, as not sure anyone who has replied gets my point:

I (anyone) live in a 1 bedroom house (has some other rooms in it, we'll call them parks and forests)
1 - 2 people live there comfortably
3 -6 people can live there at a push
7 - 15 people can live there if necessary... call it 20 people if you start using other rooms as sleeping quarters

Stick 39 people in it and see how it pans out with regards to simple stuff like kitchen and bathroom use. Or 78 people in a 2 bedroom house

Or 39 times the people in any area of land compared to 1 person in another equal sized area of land, but then also tell those other people they are whatever-ist for not wanting to keep upping their number of people sharing that same space and infrastructure.

Race, religion (even though I despise it), gender, height, age, odor, haircut, tit size, or whatever else you can think of... none of that is even a factor, simple logistics is. Express concern though about logistics, and suddenly you are a racist, xenophobe, sexist, or whatever other buzz-insult there is, with a dash of assumptions like 'that won't solve terrorism', or 'that won't solve idiots not being able to get a job', and so forth.

When science talks about future colonies in space because of Earth overcrowding it's exciting, when someone says 'wtf there are a fuckton of people in this one space' it's 'racist'.

Perfect example really of how the word (along with many other words) have lost true meaning through misuse and mis-labelling. <--- Down to the constant cycle of divisiveness created by population growth, amongst other reasons?

Well, IDK ... My paternal grandfather arrived in America at the age of 10 in 1911 from Czarist Russia. He slept on this cousin's floor in a New York City tenement with other newly arrived relatives.

But there was future space -- in Forest Hills, Queens NYC and a summer home in North Miami Beach then a retirement home on 9 lots on Biscaya Island, Surfside, Florida.

There is space left in the USA and many other places on this planet. From what I have seen the population density in many places is extreme. But people create these densities for commercial reasons -- then have to live in the messes they make.

It's also about money. Every migrant with skills lower than a nurse or programmer is a drain on the economy. They take jobs from the natives of that country, lower wages, create no new economy while driving up the need for the government to fund them or the people they have put out of a job.

The average cost of a house/flat anywhere where there are jobs is $300,000. housing 6 people that's $50,000 per person before they find a job and start "contributing".

and when the Muslim-bashing is left out I don't think it's an inherently negative thing to talk about how societies need to change to adapt to changes in migration patterns. it's actually vital.


in looking at population density and immigration it makes more sense to look at smaller geographic areas though, specifically urban centers. the reasons being that a) looking at an entire nation can skew stats (eg, Canada has a low population density overall but it's higher in cities where most people live) and b) most immigrants tend to settle at least initially in more urban areas

when looking at some of the most livable cities in the world (Vienna, Zurich, Toronto, Vancouver and Tokyo for example), the population density is higher than many urban centers in the UK. y'all have some room to grow still =)

along with that needs to come infrastructure to support population growth as well as effective settlement services, but if done right high density centers can be environmentally friendly places that peeps actually want to live


for most peeps though I don't think the concern is population growth. it's the 'other' invading a space they perceive to be their own

it's interesting the back and forth above about who's the worst. none of us are responsible for the past but we do have to acknowledge that we (and our economic foundations as pointed out above) are products of history. those of us who have benefited from the legacies of oppression (colonialism, slavery, etc) and the vast transfers of wealth that occurred therein can at least own that. it doesn't cost anything or make anyone guilty of anything, rather simply a matter of recognizing a value-neutral fact.

from there it would be cool if we all started thinking about how we've been left to deal with the messes made by our ancestors on all sides. maybe instead of continuing to pass down the same shit we could start fixing it. welcoming and supporting people fleeing a nightmare might be a good start
