Here's a simple solution.

If a family comes across the border illegally, they are taken into custody, finger printed, and put into the system and detained. After the legal process is done, they will be deported.

I understand the argument that this will not stop them from trying it again and again, but to me, an improved immigration system and policy could help reduce those numbers greatly. I also wouldn't be opposed to some kind of three strikes system. There are plenty of ways to handle this is a reasonable and humane way. What Trump is doing is trying to make the situation as ugly for those illegals as possible so they won't be tempted to try it again. To me, using kids to threaten adults or prove a point is pretty cowardly.

a US jail isn't going to rehabilitate someone who has no chances at home and lives under a lean to. It's going to be a nice comfy stay with medical coverage, hot meals, clean clothes etc. That's not going to send the message you think it is.

There are long term benefits and lower operating costs available by jailing a non-US citizen/resident for 2 years in a prison camp with conditions much like the ones that former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio set up. Over time they would serve as a deterrent, and I sincerely believe we would see a dramatic decline in illegal immigration.

Second, the employers who violate the laws should be held accountable with steep penalties
and company Directors/owners should get jail time. There are free online verification tools available to employers to check the validity of SSN's, etc.

The local authorities established his identity from his fingerprints – he was using an assumed name – but according to a news account – there was no request from ICE that he be detained (perhaps because he was detained on a weekend). March 2015 — An Idaho judge sentenced Phuong Hoang Le, a Vietnamese illegal alien, to prison for 36 months. Le was convicted of possession of a stolen car and stolen credit card. The judge commented, "Stealing cars and credit cards strike at the hearts of average middle class citizens." The prosecutor said that Le had 10 prior felony convictions, but that according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he is not likely to be deported because if Le were to be deported to Vietnam "he would be killed." March 2015 — Luis Daniel Cabrera-Guzman, a Mexican illegal alien, was sentenced in Kansas City to two years in federal prison for conspiracy to produce and distribute false and counterfeit identification documents that were sold to illegal aliens. He had previously been deported twice in 2009. Four other Mexican illegal aliens have pled guilty to the same conspiracy and await sentencing. (Kansas City infozine, March 25, 2015)

February 2015 — Sergio Cobaruvias-Romero, an illegal alien from Mexico, was convicted of possessing with intent to distribute drugs in Texas. He was found with 20 bundles of methamphetamine weighing 46 pounds and four bundles of heroine weighing 13 pounds. He was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. January 2015 — Jaime Gerardo Serrano-Villegas, a 28-year-old illegal alien from Mexico, was convicted of transporting illegal aliens. There are long term benefits and lower operating costs available by jailing a non-US citizen/resident for 2 years in a prison camp with conditions much like the ones that former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio set up. Second, the employers who violate the laws should be held accountable with steep penalties

Do you think that will fix the problem?

Maybe instead of looking at this as a legal issue we should be asking ourselves why these people are coming here and make changes to that. They are leaving Mexico because it sucks and they have no opportunities there. Why now work with Mexico and try to help build their economy up so there is more opportunity for people in that country and they won't be as tempted to leave or as tempted to get into something illegal as a means of supporting themselves.

By throwing a parent in jail for two years and just handing their kids to someone to take care of, all you are doing is adding to the problem. A broken system now has another broken family in it.

The second wave of unaccompanied illegal immigrant children has begun, with more than 3,000 of them surging across the Mexican border into the U.S. last month — the highest rate since the peak of last summer’s crisis and a warning that another rough season could be ahead.

Immigration officials warned that they expected another surge as the weather improved. Although the numbers are down some 40 percent compared with last year’s frenetic pace that sparked a political crisis for the Obama administration, fiscal year 2015 is shaping up to mark the second-biggest surge on record.

Authorities report having captured 15,647 children traveling without parents who tried to jump the border in the first six months of the fiscal year. Through this point in 2014, they had apprehended 28,579.

Just as worrisome is the rate of whole families — usually mothers with young children — who are crossing. So far this fiscal year, authorities have captured 13,911 “family units,” down 30 percent from last year.

“These statistics show that the surge of illegal arrivals from Central America was never really over,” said Jessica Vaughan, policy studies director at the Center for Immigration Studies.
