![]() South Pasadena police were called to the apartment of “ER” actress Vanessa Marquez on Thursday afternoon at the request of her landlord, who was concerned about her welfare. Less than two hours later, 49-year-old Marquez was dead at the hands of the officers, who said she had brandished what turned out to be a BB gun at them. Her death is now being investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. When officers arrived at her apartment in the 1100 block of Fremont Avenue, Marquez was having a seizure, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Joe Mendoza. Officers and a county mental health clinician spoke with Marquez for more than 90 minutes in an effort to persuade her to accept medical help. Police said she was “uncooperative,” may have been suffering from mental health issues and appeared to be unable to care for herself. While they were talking, Marquez grabbed what officers thought was a semiautomatic handgun and pointed it at them, Mendoza said. Two officers fired at her, striking her at least once in the torso, Mendoza said. Marquez was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The officers retrieved a weapon after the shooting and determined it was a BB gun that resembled a pistol, Mendoza said. Marquez was best known for her recurring role as nurse Wendy Goldman on the popular medical drama “ER,” which ran for 15 seasons until 2009. Marquez appeared on the show from 1994 to 1997. She also starred as student Ana Delgado in the 1988 film “Stand and Deliver,” which told the story of East Los Angeles math teacher Jaime Escalante. It’s the character of Delgado that Highland Park resident Garrett Rowland best remembers Marquez for as an actress. Rowland, who spent years as a substitute English teacher in East Los Angeles, would often show the film to students. Rowland saw the massive police presence on Fremont Avenue on Thursday afternoon, but made it a point to walk past the house on Friday morning when he realized who had died. “I guess it shows that you never know what’s going on with your neighbors behind closed doors,” he said. In recent years, Marquez used social media to reference her struggles with celiac disease and seizures. She wrote on Facebook in March that she was “terminally ill.” Marquez in 2005 starred in an episode on the first season of the reality television show “Intervention,” which delved into how a compulsive shopping addiction created financial problems for the actress, according to a synopsis of the episode on Amazon. She grabbed headlines last year when she accused her “ER” co-star George Clooney of helping to blacklist her from the series. In her Twitter account, which has since been deactivated, Marquez called out Clooney for condemning Harvey Weinstein and the many sexual allegations against the filmmaker, E! news reported in October. Marquez claimed Clooney had derailed her career when she spoke out about such harassment on the set of “ER.” Clooney is filming on location in Europe and could not be reached for comment on Friday. He has publicly denied the allegations. John Levey, the casting director for “ER,” said he remembers Marquez as part of the talented group of individuals who acted as a foundation for the series. “That group was a trampoline that allowed the stars of the show to jump higher,” he said. “She was very much a part of that early success. It’s hard to believe this would be her end.” Toni McGhee, a friend of Marquez, wrote in a statement that she often told the actress that she believed her health problems stemmed from the loss of her career, which she said broke her spirit. McGhee said that Marquez had issues with her landlord and the actresses’ final days were filled with the constant fear of being evicted. “She told me she wouldn’t mind passing away at home and haunting the beautiful building she lived in as she was in love with where she lived ...” McGhee wrote. On Friday, handymen bustled around the five-unit South Pasadena property where Marquez lived, making repairs to the entrance and along the stairwell leading to her upstairs apartment. A vase full of light purple-and-white silk flowers remained in front of a shattered window in the entryway. Several bullets had pierced the drywall. A man who identified himself as Marquez’s landlord declined to comment to reporters at the scene. The shooting left neighbors on Fremont Avenue — a quiet, tony street lined with Craftsman-style homes — on edge. Justin Ko, who lives a few doors down the street from Marquez, said he moved from Koreatown a year ago after a violent incident in his neighborhood led to massive police presence. “It shocked us,” he said of Thursday’s shooting. “This is a safe area.” The names of the officers involved in the shooting have not been released. A similar incident with South Pasadena police occurred in June 2017, when authorities said 41-year-old Marco Cardoza pointed what appeared to be a handgun at officers who were attempting to serve a warrant at his Burbank home. Multiple officers fired their weapons at Cardoza, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives later learned that the man’s pistol was a replica. 2:35 p.m.: This article was updated with more comments from neighbors and people who had worked with Marquez. 12:15 p.m.: This article was updated with details from Marquez’s neighborhood. 1:40 p.m.: This article was updated from comments from ER’s casting director, a friend of Marquez, and neighbors. Why the hell she did pay for a medical treatment which was actually paid off already?

He didn't pay anything like Obamacare. Otherwise, the government have paid him the money for being a disabled (he had no work). Moreover, the government has paid the money to his sons as well, even when they were 18+. My friend has bought his first car (a shitty old Lada 2101) for the money he was paid by the government as a son of a disabled man. That was the evil Soviet Union... In the USA the process seems to be much more optimized. You take the money for Obamacare and send them to... nowhere. After that you ask a citizen to pay for the treatment which doesn't treat and after that, you send a police squad to eliminate the problem. That's extremely cool and very effective!

You point a replica gun at police you ought to be shot dead. Simple ! Or do you want the cop waiting if he gets killed first ? That would be stupid.

If you point a replica gun at a cop here in Australia.. your dead, so no surprises in the USA its the same policy.
With 3d printed and home made guns.. anything in any form could be a gun. so.. Point anything at a cop.. and they're justified in blowing your brains out. welcome to the future |

What exactly does that accomplish? So you shoot arm or leg and they still shoot you? Center mass is large, steady and best target to neutralize a threat. Any other target is a risky waste of time.

Russia: The Sickness of a Nation December 21, 2016 BY CHANEY KALINICH The probability that a 15-year-old boy in Russia will die before he reaches the age of 60 is greater than 40%.1 The ongoing health crisis in Russia presents a frightening picture of a nation’s leaders undermining its own citizens’ lives through neglect, corruption, and a quest for power. Russia is a wealthy country with vast resources at its disposal—an estimated 40% of the world’s natural resources—but these riches have limited benefit for its citizens’ health.1 Typically, a country’s overall health improves with industrialization and increased wealth, but male life expectancy in Russia is 13 years shorter than that of its counterparts around the world.2 Russia is widely regarded as one of the world’s superpowers, yet it suffers from HIV infection rates higher than most developing countries, and one of the highest rates of alcoholism in the world. Russia’s massive public health problems result from complex and deep-seated societal norms paired with a government that has demonstrated inadequate interest in fixing them. References: Chelala, C. Here is a viral video of Belorussian police "brutality" (it's not Russia, but it's our neighborhood country). The police brutally beats a big male on drugs with a knife. Everyone of the had a gun and can kill him in one single shot, but the only thing that they did is to shot his leg to disarm him. Spoiler: the guy has survived of course. P.S. It's always easy to kill someone, but can you stop a mentally ill person without a murder? Do you have balls for that?

in my country she would not have been shot...it is very rare for police to shoot somebody and you have to be shooting back at them...a woman with a gun would not get shot here 100% before she opened fire first and even then if nobody is in danger the police hide and let her run out of ammo...not because they are not capable of taking her out with a rifle, but simply because many of these situations can be resolved without bloodshed and just holding a gun without shooting it will not void your human rights in my 3rd world shit hole...

You think you know more than everyone. You think you know more about US politics and are in a better position to judge people for their values and beliefs who live here. You know more than America than any American... Oh wait... like every other uninformed dumbass on this forum... i keep forgetting... You've been to the US a few times, therefore, you're an expert and in a perfect position to compare Los Angeles and it's unique crime problems and demographics to those of Hamburg... because you're a fucking rocket scientist and have it all worked out that every city is the exact same, with the same problems and therefore, should have the exact same policies and procedures. I've been to Germany a dozen times and I have never once thought I knew anything at all about Germany, it's politics or its culture. But not you. You're a cultural and political idiot savant, Just a glance here and there and you have it all worked out. Thanks DE for sending over the 9/11 terrorists by the way. Dipshit. Police are called to assist medical services, who has medical issues because she's being combative and uncooperative with medics who are attempting to render aid. Meaning there were other people in the room and their safety as well to think about.
Police are attempting to talk to her, she makes a move for a pistol, picks it up and points it at them and they instantly shoot (there are others in the room to protect as well). It's not too fucking difficult to guess that she was likely threatening to kill them in the process. Somehow they police have "an attitude problem" in dealing with an armed woman threatening others, including non-police officers.... Because a German and a Russian say it's so. retard.

Is that some kind of secret knowledge? Your police are fat cowards and pussies who afraid of their own shadows.
This is Russian DEA (not some lame patrol cops): Watch it at 4:04. He even doesn't shot a dog. Why? Try to answer this question by yourself.

CyberSEO lives in a corrupt gangster state led by a dictator, full of nothing but problems and corruption but can't stop himself from acting out - it's just insecurity. Secure people don't give 2 shits what others are doing. They certainly don't obsess on it day and night. (NOTE: this is the point where they insist that the US affects CZ or RU... so it's their obligation and responsibility to obsess on their betters day and night) Secure people definitely don't spend the bulk of their time attacking and insulting their largest customer base... like he and Stefan do.

Its funny being lectured on Russia police as someone who employed more Russian police in Vladivostok, Moscow and St Pete than he will employ people if he lived 10 lifetimes. The shit they would do for just 50.00 was unreal. They would completely rip peoples lives apart and send people to prison for years for 50.00 - saying they found a few grams of heroin in their pocket.
for some reason, i'm writing this and i started thinking about this kid who lived across the hall in a building in Vladivostok. he came home one day and the entire apartment was painted red with his mothers blood. his super cunty aunt and uncle moved in the next day if i recall. I didn't go in the apartment but i seen enough from just seeing through a cracked door as an investigator was entering that there was so much blood that it looked like it had to come from multiple bodies. the aunt and uncle basically just took the apartment as a free place to live and neglected him. he was maybe 10 years old. they asked me and my GF to come to his birthday, which we did... but in typical Russian style that consistent of a fistfull of adults in one room pounding shots of vodka with the kid sitting alone in the other room... on his birthday. the uncle as a typical wannabe russian thug lowlife who worked with group exporting girls to china under the guide of "hosting" in nightclubs - which really just mean the same as it did for all those girls who got sent to korea... it meant slavery/sex trafficking. i always felt bad for the kid because he'd experienced such crazy trauma and then was surrounded by cunts. a few years later... this kid is 15 or so and breaks into a guys garage (meaning in the Russia sense - a small. shitty, home made sheet metal shed barely big enough for a Lada) and takes some tools. somehow he gets caught. he returns everything. He was a good kid. BUT.. the prosecutor wanted his apartment. she made him a deal - "i'll give you a small studio apartment in exchange for your very large apartment and then i'll drop all the charges... if not, you'll do 5 years". The kid declined, was charged, was prosecuted and had his life destroyed because this is exactly what Russia is for most people and definitely what it was through the late 90s and 2000s. This is what Russia still is for most of the country. a corrupt shithole where you can buy off a cop for 50.00 to say they found a pistol in someones waisteband and ultimately see that person go to prison for many years. But yeah... american cops...

Yeah, we get it... "but but but .. other countries......."
a funny member popped into my head... of watching a group of cops in Moscow stomping a chechens head into the concrete IN THE POLICE station (toward the end of starey arbat) because he kept running his mount. to be fair, it wasn't a great time for a Chechen in moscow to be running his mouth. To be honest, i kinda thought it was amusing since he kept up with the "do you fucking idiots know who i am " stuff and until they lost their shit. But yeah... integrity, honor... protect and serve. we get it. My first speeding ticket in my BMW was on prospect MIra by VDNKH - the speed limit was whatever,... maybe 65km/hr and I was doing 100+ at night. The cop introduced himself as they do and as I was getting ready to say something shitty - he just said "give me 100.00 right now". I told him to fuck off and he made (or pretended) to make a call to have my car impounded. I took out a 100 bill, wadded it up and threw it on the ground, got back in my car and drove off. But yeah... integrity, honor,.. trust, protect etc.

There is no "but", clown. It's a full quote of the article from land of the free. It doesn't come for 90s nor from 30s. It's the USA today. Today means literally RIGHT NOW. Aug 31, 2018 | 2:35 PM. Do you speak English motherfucker?

In fact, i knew the head of a police department in St Pete and he had something like 12 radar guns to give cops. They had to pay him 350.00 USD for the right to take it for the day because it was basically a little money printer.
But yeah... honesty. Russia. Police integrity. Russian police are pillars of honesty The funny thing is that you don't really believe anything you are saying. You're just talking shit and trolling. I was last in Russia in 2007... but i seriously doubt that it went from being a lawless shit hole where money rules to the day and where everyone is corrupt to suddenly being a shining light of hope and honesty.

Sorry the Russian is right. I understand standing up for your county but the Americans are refusing to see a problem. Our police kill a lot of people. Our people kill a lot of people. We need to change. It is not easy, people like you will resist obviously.
