Why VR is not more popular

Virtual reality (VR) technology has been around for several years, but it has not yet become as popular as some people predicted. There are several reasons why VR is not yet as popular as it could be:
  • Cost: One of the main reasons VR is not more popular is the cost. VR headsets and systems can be expensive, and many people are not willing or able to invest in the technology.
  • Limited content: While there are some great VR experiences available, the amount of content is still limited compared to traditional video games or movies. This can make it difficult for VR to attract and retain a wider audience.
  • Technical requirements: In order to use VR technology, users need a powerful computer or gaming console that is capable of running the software. This can be a barrier for some users who do not have access to the required technology.
  • Comfort: Some people experience discomfort or motion sickness when using VR technology, which can limit its appeal and accessibility.
  • Lack of awareness: Despite some high-profile VR releases, many people are still unaware of the technology or do not fully understand what it is and how it works. This can make it difficult for VR to attract a wider audience.

Despite these challenges, VR technology is improving rapidly, and there is still potential for it to become more popular in the future. As the cost of VR systems comes down, the amount of content increases, and the technology becomes more accessible, it is possible that VR could become more mainstream.

I use it just about every day for iRacing and flight sims. Actually a lot of simracers use it, much more immersive than a triple monitor setup and not as costly.

It would be great for porn if the producers knew what they were doing.

That FPV shit where it's all in your face and you can't back away from it is annoying and gets shut off quickly. Some of them shoot it so close that you have to cross your eyes to focus on it. Nobody wants to see that.

FPV is the wrong target for it. Shoot it regular style with a viewpoint from 3 to 10 feet away.

Check in steam.
It's wrong.

For me it's the balance:
Cost vs what can i expect
Doesn't worth it

I haven't used mine for ages - My £600 HP Reverb G2 headset is sat gathering dust, & my £600 racing stand, with wheel, pedals & shifter, are on their side, under my desk, so as to give me more space to stretch out and masterbate...

EDIT: That's not to mention the MANY Hundreds of Pounds of paid VR software I purchased which is just sat in my Steam account, being unused...

Well, yes and no... My neighbour is the one who actually bought the VR headset, the simracing setup and paid for all the games on his top end computer...

I just knew when he was away visiting family, so I broke in and stole them...

I shoot a lot of VR As for VR being successful in porn, I do very well out of it as do a few others. I guess you could call it niche, but I have been selling niche for years already. It more than pays the rent.

I'll sum up in nice simple easy to understand explanation why VR is not more popular. IT'S FUCKING STUPID !!

I've learned a long time ago that when nerds go full retard and drool over a piece of technology it's normally rejected by the mainstream public. At best it becomes a niche for a while but long term it ends up in a flea market bargain bin with the 1970s pocket fishing pole.

Yeah, they said that about computers as well. How'd that work out?

The breakthrough came last year when several firms started marketing home computers — usually composed of a typewriter panel, a television screen and a cassette recorder.

The machines now being marketed cost no more than a high-quality stereo, and require little more than reading an instruction manual to learn how to operate. The home models presently available can store recipes, do math problems, and even record telephone calls when a person is not home.

But that is only for starters, say those in the computer business. Someday the machines will be doing everything from the wash to income tax returns.

I don't think that's the actual answer. I believe that VR porn could be phenomenally popular, but the current incarnation suffers from bad implementation. Let me explain the issues:

1- The headsets are designed for games not porn. (I'll get back to this one)

2- The idea behind VR porn is that the viewers' brains can get tricked into believing that they are the one having sex - they're not watching, they're participating.

3- That means that there are a LOT of limitations. Anything that breaks the viewer out of that illusionary state will make the experience bad (worse than just watching a porn video - if you aren't participating, then it's just a worse way to watch porn).

3a- This means that there are only a very few positions and sex acts that can be done. Basically for traditional sex it is man lying down and woman doing everything to him. If the man moves but the viewer doesn't, it breaks immersion. If the man touches the woman with his hand, the viewer's hand doesn't move and doesn't touch anything, so it breaks immersion.

3b- THIS means that VR is only really good for submissive type porn watching (by the male). Most men prefer the man to be fully participating or even dominant. These kinds of scenes don't work in VR, so this is a huge limitation for the market.

But, even for this market subset (viewers who enjoy the man just lying there and being played with):

1a- The headsets are deficient. If you imagine lying down as a male viewer, you want the experience to be like real sex. But if your head is not raised, you won't see anything but the ceiling. The problem with headsets is that they don't display very far below the horizon line. So, in order to view the penetration (for example), the viewer must raise his head much more than he does in real life. This put huge strain on the person's neck and is really not comfortable, and the discomfort increases rapidly.
(I use lying down as an example, but the same is true for sitting and standing VR positions)

1b- The headsets make the viewer blind. If they want to use lube, they need to fumble around in the dark or take off the headset. If they want to reposition or get a pillow or basically do anything, it's a huge ordeal. And of course, when it comes time to finish, it is way messier in a headset than if they can see.

In order for VR porn to take off, in my opinion, it would need a new kind of headset that addresses the problems of field of view, comfort and user-blindness. It also needs a new kind of device (I have designed this, but not put it in production) that would allow the viewer to use hands to mimic what they see. Then it would require a whole new breed of VR Production company to film the high-quality video designed to make use of the hardware to create scenes that deliver full immersion.

There are other issues that limit the value of VR porn, but they aren't as core (things like the height of the man under the camera is important for creating immersion; the color of the skin and tattoos also matter. These things break immersion if they don't match the viewer within a fairly tight margin. This also limits the audience of any given scene. - If your dick is way higher up or lower down than the model's, then it breaks immersion for example, so if they're much taller or shorter...)

Overall, the promise of VR porn was that you could feel as though you are the one having sex. Delivering on that promise has proven elusive, so VR porn has not gained traction (yet).

Actually, it has gained traction. Your concerns are real, but they are also the concerns of 2d porn and 2d movies.
What we are trying to do and it is working very well is what all films try to do is suspend disbelief. VR porn viewers do that on steroids. That is the magic of what we do.

After trying it out a bunch of times, I agree with all of your points. I haven't yet found a scene that was shot "right".

The scenes that were shot from a third person perspective are even worse.

I am curious. What do you mean by "right"?

My headset won't stay on when I'm masturbating, even with duct tape.

I mean where it feels geometrically like my body is the POV performers body, and I don't have to move my head in an uncomfortable way to see anything.

I've already explained this before, but as men we generally have to be super stealth ninjas when we want to knock a solo one out. Our senses have to be on point, and we can leave no trace of anything ever happening. A big goofy ass headset with 2 bitch ass joy sticks is not it.

You gotta be a loner or somebody with a lot of alone time to really get busy with a vr set. That ain't the majority.

Mobile phone solo wins.

Good VR is like that. There is a very critical distance that the performer must be and lots of people are understanding that. Better to be a little too far than too close. I have been in this game since the beginning and believe me, we had a huge learning curve and a lot of fuck ups along the way as happens with something this new. But I think it is pretty much under control now.
Look at this

Different strokes. I hate looking at porn on a mobile phone. And I never use two controllers. That is for gamers.

Yea let's look at how this has played out.

Did we get the promised 20 hour work week? Fuck NO! We work more today than we used to work.

Did we get more efficiency? A few companies did but most got people who take twice as long to fuck around with the computer than to just use a pen and paper.

Did we get smarter people? FUCK NO! We got fucking village idiots so idiotic that even Hell is rejecting them. (Check the politics section for some village idiots)

Did we get more money in our pockets ? Fuck NO! We got a handful of entitled brats who bitch that they can't get complimentary sushi, yoga mats and red wine on tap in the workplace.

In 1970 the average shmuck on a mediocre salary could afford a house, a reliable car, a wife and still save money for his kid's education. Today he can't even get crap at the dollar store for a dollar. But considering how fucked up and shitty the world is becoming I'm betting it won't be too much longer before computers are turned into clubs for the upcoming civil war.

They used to say the same sort of things about male sex toys, and now the male sex toy industry is worth $40 billion a year.
