New Orleans

So in my drive across the country two weeks ago I chose to take the longer route to Texas and drove through New Orleans. Let me just tell you that WOW you have got to see it to believe it. Everything destroyed and abandoned. I mean yeah you saw the shit on TV but to actually SEE it in person was breath-taking. Has anyone else seen New Orleans since Katrina? And does anyone have a clue as to whats going on with rebuilding the city? It doesnt look like anyones made any effort to begin trying to revive the city.

I also heard that where the levies broke and the water flooded the
"soup-dish" that they left whatever was under water... under water? Bodies included. Is this true? Im sure I could research this online but I really kinds wanted to dicuss something of some sort of meaning.

Thoughts anyone?

It really is pathetic what Bush and company haven't done. We are sending fucking billions to rebuild a country that we blew up and could give a fuck about us.

Yet we can even rebuild on of the US' greatest cities. Can you imagine Kennedy, Clinton, or Reagan in the same situation.

If there was oil there, you can bet your ass that town would be brand new now.

You are about 16 months behind the news on this one. Yes to all your questions btw. Some areas of the city are 100% back some will probably never come back. If you took I-10 through the city then you drove through New Orleans East, that section will likely never come back.

Before thinking that nothing has been done here you should have seen what it looked like 16 months ago. This shit isn't going to be cleaned up over night, or over 5 years for that matter.

I'm going on either Saturday or Sunday.

And it's not just NOLA. There are people still living in trailers from when Andrew hit FL. Unfortunately, like NOLA, those trailers are better than what they were living in before and not many still there have any intention of leaving them.

My son was in tech school in Biloxi and I talked to some of his friends still there after it happened. Apparently the base is back - $50mil or something in damage. They still had folks there because of Ivan from Pensacola.

We are actually staying in Biloxi over the weekend and making a day trip to NOLA for brunch.

I spent a lot of time in the Biloxi area right before it hit so it will be interesting to see the differences.

You have to remember that before Katrina, there were fair parts of New Orleans that didn't look all that good to begin with. Decades of corruption, widespread poverty / subsistance living, and a fairly soft economy have meant that much of New Orleans wasn't very strong to start with.

Many of the areas of greatest destruction were areas where people owned the house but had little or no insurance, and those that were insured were not covered for flooding. There are ongoing court cases attempting to get insurance companies to pay out because the flooding was the result of a hurricane, and so far those have been a mxed bag.

Most of those areas will required the houses to be rebuilt basically on stilts to be above the potential flooding the next time. I would suspect that many people are having a hard time getting any financing to build in these areas.

What amazes me is that the state / city hasn't just said "we are sending in the bulldozers, everything is declared a total loss" and at least start the process of starting over. Too much stuff just ain't ever going to get fixed, it is just going to rot.

They tried. The residents in those areas filed lawsuits and it took months just to get it worked out in the courts for the city to be allowed to remove the houses that had been relocated to public right-aways like in the middle of the street, lol.

I guess you haven't heard about the "NO Bulldozing" campaign or seen any of the signs posted in some of these "communities". Wooden houses all broken up, covered in filth, inside and house, many of them not structually sound any more, and these " people " will do whatever then can to fight the powers that be from bulldozing them. Why fight it ? Many reasons . The main one is because they can. Also because someone wants to do something, so like most people who hold a little power for once in their lives they want to use it and try to stop the city from doing what they want to do. Others will tell you they feel like you will be destroying their community ( like that hasn't already happened).

So what happens. The shit drags on while the state has to jump through hoops to make it legal to go on private property and tear down houses. They have to give notices and allow time for repairs, etc.. 98% of which wont be done, but it is a long process. The result is that many of "people" have be relocated somewhere else and the longer it takes to make their area inhabbitable again (bulldized down and ready for rebuilding) the more time they are kept away and take up roots somewhere else and get discouraged from coming back.

It's fucked up, but only in some areas. The two main are the 9th ward and new orleans east.

There is so much more to the story then what you see on the news. Sometimes I think the media gets 3rd hand information or just straightup changes it to fit the message they are trying to send. From going through this and seeing it first hand and then seeing what is reported I will never give much credit to what the media reports. Unless the reporter lives and works in the town he is reporting about, they don't even come close to getting it right. I bet that applies to all situations.

Bush is busy right now, he doesn't have time to worry about America.
Catch him in about 2 years when he's bashing the next President for not doing something about it.

Will, at that point, the people have spoken, and the politicians don't have to worry. They can leave the idiots in their filth and they can figure themselves out.

New Orleans is the worst example yet of utter incompetence from prior to Katrina to months/years afterwards.

Even natural disasters more severe than Katrina in other parts of the world get a better response and recovery action - the fact that Katrina occurred in a "western country" with more than adequate resources and is still a disaster area is a damning indicitement.

There are no excuses - they are all pointless....

Thats pretty much what it has come too. (I am not a racist, just stating the facts.)
The city is pretty much black owned and opperated. Prior to the hurricane there were several years were the mayor was black, police chief black, almost all city officials, from congressional reps to school board were black. The city went to shit and there was no one to blame any more but themselves (which they never blammed themselves). During this time coruption was even worse then ever. Just a few years ago the NO School board lost a couple hundred MILLION dollars. Blacks were in charge and benefited from the lost funds. Public workers who were dead for several years were still being sent checks, the vast majority of contracts awarded were done with kickbacks. Anyone know William Jeferson, lol they found like 80K in his freezer a while back. he should be impeached soon.

The black politicians and city workers were stealing from... their people. Not from whites. The millions from the school board was less money that was available to use for education for 98% black childen. All of the coruption and money stolen was at determinet to the community which was about 70% black, but 98% of blacks were dependent on these services. The majority of the whites left lived in wealthier neighborhoods, sent their kids to private schools, etc.. so they were not affected as much by the coruption.

The other interesting thing is that there are several ministers who have churchs in the city. All of these minsiters live large, a couple in fact drive rolls and live in upscale white neighborhoods. But they are out ever sunday passing the collection basked to their "people" who are on wellfare but still give to the church. get back in their rolls and drive home to their gated community.

These two groups (politicians and ministers), all blacks, are living the good life while they are keeping their own people down. You would think most people would get wise to this, and demand change (even if it meant bring in white people which in many cases are more qualified to clean things up.) But, since the ministers and politicians have devised a way to confuse their people, they through out the race as often as possible. This is the brillance of their scam, they keep the people so pre occupied with race and hating the white people that they are too busy being pissed off about that they can't see their "leaders" stealing money out of their back pocket. Even if they did notice it, these "leaders" make white people so evil the blacks would never want to elect one or ask them to come in help change things. It's really is brillant on their part.

Here is the proof. roughly 360 murders a year in the city almost all black victims. All most all committed by black men. The "leaders" will say yes we need to look into that, and leave it at that for those 350 blacks who lost their lives. BUT the 10 or so black people a year killed by whitie, and they are calling in the NAACP down for protesting and marches and white people are evil, etc. etc. they get their people all worked up. So i guess it's ok for a black to kill a black and those 350 blacks were killed by other blacks were ok, their lives obviously weren't worth anything. But the small fraction killed by a white man ( which in most cases was self defense type situations) and it is a big fucking deal.

It;s gotten to the point that the surronding areas want to help get the city cleaned up and own track because the white people realize that the area they live in is affected by what happens to the city and can hurt them if it collapses. But the blacks are leary and suspicious and don't want our help... i wonder why.

You'll probably never hear anyone say these things it is too un politically correct or most don't even see it. but that is exactly what is happening. And if a Black person starts to sound "too" white or brings in white people to do things he is an uncle Tom. They said Nagin was "too white" a few years back because he went against something the minister wanted.

I hope people realize this is just the city. Some people will say fuck'em don't send them any money. Remember the city was just one part of the area that was affected, don't hurt the other victims because of one area's stupidity.

I went to misissippi less then a month after katrina, and then to new orleans a few weeks later and spent about 2 and a half months in that area.

insurance companies were FUCKING people and had to hire armed guards to guard the hotels they were staying at so the insurance holders who got fucked wouldnt fuck them up...

the french quarter was relativly untouched and most of the stuff was back up and running.

some of the bars in the quarter opened up b4 they even had electricity

everyone was VERY nice and it had a very tight knit community feel to it

the national guard patrolled bourbon street and yelled at people to get off the street b4 curfew (2am) as if it were some 3rd world country

there were hardly ANY chicks

pretty much no traffic laws were being inforced, people were parking on sidewalks and street medians...

the house next door to where i was staying was missing an entire side of their house, so you could see in as if it were a doll house

seeing the shit i saw there definatly had an effect on me, and the little respect i had for the crooked dumbass bush administration went out the fucking window

america is in a bad state
