My latest rant

I wrote this article for AVN which came out this month:

"Style over substance: How mass-produced personality-based marketing is killing the industry."

Do you make business decisions and partnerships based somewhat on someone's post count? Does someone's popularity and ability to round the troops as it were have an effect on your marketing plan? Do you take someone's word at face value without investigating every detail of their product simply because you are familiar with them? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you buy into the concept of personality based marketing. We've all done it at one time or another, and given the relatively young age of our business, in some circles it only takes a matter of months to be the next personality. This is both good for business but at the same time is highly destructive to our industry.

Rest of article can be found here:
avnonline.com

I think a few people here can relate?

I'll be moderating the "Making a Name for Yourself" ? Viral Marketing and other trade secrets seminar at the Phoenix Forum next Saturday March 31 with an esteemed group of panelists. Perfect opportunity to ask questions and make comments in person... I'm guessing those that need to hear it most though will either be missing the show or still in bed

LOL.. how true - wonder where LAJ got that idea from?

I personally find it interesting how much personality fibbing goes on. the real you is no where near the board personality. sad, really.

This seminar should be one of the best at the show this year and not just because of the esteemed group of panelists and "High Profile" moderator.

Anyone that is involved in online adult marketing needs to be here

Jay, those of us who ignore the personality based marketing don't want anyone to know we're actually getting it right. So please unpublish your article.

Great article and all of it very true. A number of people have come blazing into the industry and spend as much time marketing themselves as they do the product or services they are selling.

I'm guilty of this myself although mostly by accident. I attended a show with Steve Lightspeed and Tanker, both of whom knew everyone there. I felt like a "no one" and truthfully no one was intersted in talking to me. I ended up in a hot tub with one of AaronM's models as a way of "introducing myself" to everyone there. What I failed to notice is that nearly everyone, including JFK, had a camera there. The next morning the pictures were all over GFY. (My wasn't too pleased with me and we now have a "no nudity" policy at shows.)

But you failed to mention one thing LAJ that really bugs me about branding ourselves in our industry - the fact that some people have the same name as the program they work for. (Platinum Becky comes to mind here!) It might help at first when a someone new to our industry when they associate themselves with their company name which is "stronger" than their name, but a year on down the road they've changed companies and have lost their identity.

I'll look forward to seeing you in Phoenix LAJ.

Very good question. Obviously that is part of the branding of my name even tho many of the newer people in the biz don't know what my name means much less how to pronounce it, much less care.

But I think it is a good idea regardless if you still live in the city/state/region or not. It's easily brandable, easy to remember, and can conjure up images which can go a long way to remember a person.

I lived in LA for 12 years and my name is Jay... henceforth LAJ. Now i'm in Austin and can conveniently call it Lonestar austin jay... LOL... doesn't really matter tho because we all live and work in cyber space when you really think about it. Thing is tho... I'm still "LA" in a lot of ways... I was an actor all thru the 90s, still know the city like the back of my hand, am somewhat metro, am into fitness, liberal, and all that other good shit that comes with being an Angelino... and yeah, I suppose some of the other stereotypes that come along with it.

So yeah... I think it's a good idea.

I have had likely 5 names in this business. I have had a name for Adult Check. A name for Adult Check's payment processing system / platform. A name I used when I owned MGP sites, such as Adult-Clips.com. I have a name for Weg now, and it isn't even consistent from board to board.

I am not here to brand myself, I am here to help create a successful program and contribute to the greater good of this business.

I am on this panel. I am very anti-panel. I can't honestly say that I am the right person for the panel, as I obviously don't see myself as a brand. I accepted the panel spot as I thought I was being placed on "viral marketing for consumers," something I spend a lot more time focusing on as opposed to my GFY nick.

I enjoy making fun post. I enjoy my personal blog. But I don't take any of it that serious.

If you make sincere contributions, the right people will know who you are.

Your name will not matter at that point.

I for one see your point Cory...

It does work in your favor tho that you end up working at high profile companies, go to a lot of shows, have a very distinctive look, and as far as I can tell are one of the only Corys in the biz...

I am the BP4L.

Bow to the Power.
I'm not sure the lore has survived through the years to be honest. Most people who don't know the history usually ask if you're full of yourself or high on meth.

Nahh its all good..

I have a Masters Degree in Health Care Marketing. I never used it.

So instead I used it to market and create a brand for myself in this industry.

Its all good..

No other person or "clone" as ya call it is taken serious.

I have the shit to back it up. The reputation to back it up. And the Name to back it up.

Ive created a name, an image, a handsign that was created as a joke but became an industry icon, and even slogans like "bow to the power" or "I fucked her" that people relate to me with..

ITs all fun and games most of it. But its marketing at its finest.

Most people dont realize the thought thats gone into the branding and marketing. Ive been implanted in many people's heads in the biz and they dont even realize it.

But in the end of the day I could buy and sell most of these clones..

And I could round up the masses like sheep in a field on a whim.

I remember that night Well Rochard

ok read the article... and Jay you know I love you... but my one criticism is something like that is pure fluff unless you name some names and give some down and dirty history...

The reps that pretended to be owners... NAME THEM

the folks that knew nothing about the net that spoke on panels at shows as if they were an authority... NAME THEM

the blowhards that bounce from company to company on resumes of hollow hype... NAME THEM

Until then it can only be a gummy insinuation instead of being an indictment that has teeth...

LOL.

It doesnt matter to me really.. I dont market or play the game like I used to.

There was a time and day for all that. That has all but passed.

I have a kid, a wife, and a life now days. Time isnt what it used to be. The people who need to know me know me. And those that dont I can always work my way in.

The whole BP4L thing started back in 1999 or so.. Back when I knew all the tgp traffic guys, etc, and shows were small.. TGP guys didnt go to em. I did. I knew the paysite owners. I refered and introduced many of the traffic guys to the paysite guys..

In an era before GFY and other message boards there was no bridge between the two. I was it..

I was making up to 20k a month just on referals alone.. Thats 1 penny per click of someone I refered..

That was inssane.. That was the power of "The Boneprone Family"

LOL.

Thats how it was all created.. I would go to shows, and people would be like "hey introduce me to your family... The Boneprone Family"

Heheheh. It was biz..

Then when GFY came along and shows got bigger, It became more of a game, and just self promotion..

But it was all good..

I did it right.

Now days its pure entertainment. For me anyhow.

My 2 million visitiors a day to my sites is all I need now days. Not Industry name recognition.
