Obviously not, since I'm not the only one who took affront to it.

Did you miss that?

I removed you from my AdultWhoswho after reading your latest blog entry about asians.

I should have held on a second longer and saved the world from that article.

I remember a quote from Dokk, when I met him in Jamaica at the 2002 Negril Bash. "Why charge people to talk to each other?" I've always been a supporter of free registration, the Phoenix Forum grew to its currently popularity because of it. It was only after the show became overrun with non-industry people that it made sense to require an admission fee. But if you want to charge admission, give it back to the attendees either in paid entertainment, drinks, or food.

we are all a part of the same industry, and whoever throws the show should decide the fees. it only takes a few attendees to be a success since 99% of the business is in the hands of a relative few.

Alec made a smart marketing move by introducing the free registrations for XBIZ Summer. People were (and still are, as evident by the page count of this post) definitely talking about it...and people took action by signing up and attending. Isn't that what good marketing is about? Regardless of your ability to "afford" to purchase a badge or register for free, it was thinking that was "out of the box" and differentiated this show from the others that are competing for attendance for the rest of the year.

Many large industry shows (not the adult industry) offer free registrations for attendees. The thinking being, the more attendees, the more chance a sponsor has to meet with a potential client. How the sponsor chooses to handle the attendees and those opportunities, is up to them. If you look at CES, they offer free registrations for attendees for all exhibits and seminars, up to a certain date. Beyond that time, there is a staggered deadline in which the registration price goes up. When checking in, on site, you must show 2 forms of id - 1 is a photo id and the second is an id that verifies that you are part of the industry (paystub, biz card, etc.). Something like this could easily be done in the adult industry.

Something else that is commonly done, in other industry shows, is the same registration process as above, but then sponsors also receive admission badges that can be given out by them. So if you miss the free cutoff date, you need to contact a show sponsor to get a free admission pass. A great opportunity for programs to meet up with potential affiliates before the show. Onsite registration procedures still apply - to verify the attendee.

Any parties that go on, in conjunction with the show, are generally thrown by individual companies, just like in adult. These are invite only. You get a ticket/pass or you don't get in. There's no reason this can't be done here as well.

I think I would have felt that it was "ribbing" if it came from you or someone else I have met before.

Since I don't know Connor personally, never met him or interaccted with him I was surprised by his comment...especially since I even said "I respectfully disagree...". When he replied with that statement out of the blue it defintely felt like a shot over the bow to me.

I guess what solidified it for me was that he never addressed my reply to his statement but rather everyone elses. I'm not being thin skinned here...I'm trying to clarify what he meant since I don't know him.

Anyway, enough said, Water under the bridge.

Jay, we need to catch up sometime...hit me up on ICQ love to hear whats going on with you.

I have been pretty active in going to shows (averaging 5 a year) for the last 3 years (started to cut back this year)

I always see the same faces (for the most part not complaining, there are some good looking adult biz people).

There are so many more adult webmasters (affiliates) out there than what is seen posting on any message board. The number of actual affiliates at shows is pretty small.

Most that attend are service providers seeking to meeting up with program owners, program owners to meet with each others, people looking for traffic deals, processors, hosting etc, etc.

Price is a huge consideration for an affiliate webmaster to attend the show, from the registration fee, to the hotel, to the airfare to get there, along with meals and drinks.

Vegas is probably one of the cheapest places to fly to. The hotel was reasonable (assuming you got a room before it was booked up), and the admission was free.

i arrived late on thursday, so i didn't get a chance to get a feel for how many affiliates were there, but I would hope that there was a larger attendance than normal.

Affiliates need to get out to meet with Affiliate Managers, meet with their peers. up and coming programs need to get and learn what others are doing, work on traffic trades, etc.

The long standing joke about the panels, is you hear the same things all of the time. Well, those same topics need to be presented each time, because there are new people coming into the industry and a trade show is a great place to learn stuff.

For panels, maybe have some that are more "advanced" topics, so that those that are experienced might gleem some new insight.

I liked AVN's format of having breakout sessions after a panel, so you can continue the dialogue. It allowed for those in the audience that had experience to chime in, as well as those that were sitting in the seats to speak up for being intimidated in having to walk up to the microphone.

Whoever is running the show, they have their business reasons for structuring their admission fees and sponsorship prices, since they want to make money.

As an observer, I am saying, more people need to be attending the shows, especially the new affiliates and the new program owners for the industry to be able to continually evolve and learn.

If you have been to large mainstream conventions like Ad Tech (which offer free admission), you will see how dull they are, how competitors don't talk to each other, how everyone is in their own groups.

I prefer the adult conventions because you can socialize and talk from an intellectual level all the way down to the "would u hit that" conversations, that you can't get from a message board , email, or ICQ conversations.

The Xbiz show in Vegas, Internext in FL, Phoenix Forum, and Cybernet are great shows because people are some what contained, so you can bump into different people. The Vegas Internext show doesn't contain people (from the previous locations up to the Palms).

The Atlanta Forum is the newcomer and will be interesting to see how it works out (should be cooler in september for Hotlanta).

Being able to contain people, give them a place to hangout (ie. circle bar), have party locations that are close by (not having to bus 45 minutes to get a venue) are some key factors for having a productive show.

Fight the 3 cents!

Hey Mike....

Sorry I didn't reply to you directly before... when I refreshed there were a bunch of comments added since my last. I missed yours until a little later, then it seemed odd to jump back to earlier in the thread.

That said... yeah, I was ribbing you. As said before... what I meant was that I'm skeptical that the badge fee was really the deciding factor for you. In other words... I'm betting you would have attended that show at the end of the day even if there was a badge fee. It doesn't take much business to justify a registration fee.

Sarcasm doesn't always translate online I guess. ;)

I may be, but it was in the same light as his response to Mike's post. My world doesn't change one bit due to it, I'm sponsoring my first show with The Atlanta Forum, and will do so with AVN, XBIZ, and other shows in the future. So this thread is VERY interesting to me, and watching the imho, utter disrepect to a potential client and so flippantly done pissed me off. No matter what back tracking that group has done, this post is there for everone to see.

Ok, maybe I would have Hard Rock security ask him to leave, but you know what I mean....

Too bad others did, including the person you slammed.

Whatever, this issue is over, Mike is over it, I have nothing else to add to it than what I've already did.

1. Me insulting Megan is like me cutting off my testicles with a rusty spoon. Never gonna happen.

2. I know for a fact, Megan punches harder than you.

3. Tell me that wasn't a hooker I took a punch in the gut for and got kicked repeatedly (with your foot, not your shin) for.

How about this show pricing plan? For those in our industry, the model should sound familiar....

The show costs $30 to get 8 feet inside the door, and then another $142 dollars if you want to see the whole show.

In addition to the full show upgrade option, by default you are signed up for two other shows for the low price of $99 each, unless you opt out of those shows.

The $99 registration for the other two shows is then billed to you automatically for all subsequent editions of those two shows, unless or until you cancel.

Connor,

You are definitely still not invited to the Sex Entertain dinner. Anthony and I are invited. Megan will be my date. I think that's what this boils down to.

Cory,

Mike just called and said you have been removed from the dinner invite list. Looks like Megan will be Mike's date.

Then it is no longer advertising - it is when the advertising (Free and New) has "closed the deal"

Seriously, I liked the free badges, its harder to recoup your investment as the person throwing the show, but the sponsors pay that in the end.. if you want to make the big splash and have the booth or cabana then go for it..

I personally feel alot of shows do a shit job and forget the little man, we need affilaites, we know all the program owners and reps already.. We need to do new business, not business with the same 40 or 50 people we already do business with.. lol..

I'm all for bringing new blood to the shows..

Umm, actually the last person I spooned didn't like it too much, but you can ask him, Cory is very forthcoming of the experience.
