We are not having any issues so I'm checking to see if there is some internet issue out there. We are definitely up and working...

They do seem to have alot of downtime. This is the one thing that puts me off about them. My host has been up constantly since November, and even that was less than 5 minutes.

First, I owe you all an apology. I stated that we were not having issues because in my initial investigation, it showed all working fine. Since then I have found that we are having some DNS issues that are absolutely affecting some sites. We are working on it as quickly as possible and those sites that are down will be back up shortly.

Again my apologies for speaking too soon...

I'll keep you all posted.

Given the nature of both natnet and mojohost having DNS issues I would venture a guess that there is a DNS amplification attack going on, been lots of talk going on lately about these types of attacks.

It had to have been down for some time for someone to notice something as down as it takes a considerable amount of time for DNS TTL's to expire. Their network was up but their DNS servers were unreachable. We have some mutual customers with mojo and were trying to troubleshoot some issues only to find nothing wrong on this end and broken dns over there

Odd it would happen to mojo and natnet at the same time. I call shenanigans.

Maybe bot of them use one of those stupid dns services? and that where the problem was? who knows. I've never understood why any host would use those services as all it does is add another week link in the chain and another point of failure. Oh well to each his own i guess.

Apparently you didn't see my apology about this.

I did some initial checks myself and all seemed to be working so I made the incorrect post that all was fine. Unfortunately, I made the fatal mistake of not checking with my staff first. They already knew there was an issue and were already working on it.

I am human - I did make a mistake in posting too quickly. For that, I apologize. Now, with that said, I am off to work with my staff to find out what happened and what can be done to prevent it from occurring again.

We do not use a DNS service. It's a combination of load balanced hardware and a customized software solution. We would never trust our DNS or any other part of our business to a third party company.

I never said you DID use a 3rd party dns service i just said "Maybe" since mojohost was down at the same time and somone else above suggested it. Anyway good luck to you finding out why your custom hardware and software failed, and figuring out a fix, as i forsee a long night ahead. Good luck.

There is/was in fact a broadcast storm on the multi-terrabit peering fabric at the NAP of the Americas. We turned off all peer connections some time ago and are awaiting an explanation.

Something of this magnitude would have affected around 200 networks just within NOTA, I don't know that NOTA is the origin of the problem, but it's probable that this would be damaging to hosts and networks all over the place, at least in the S.E. US and everything south of the United States.

Just want to be clear here, you seem to have jumped to conclusions.

Mojohost does NOT use an outside DNS service.

We'll post an update as well as email our clients when we have a definitive answer for what happened.

All you need to do is search gfy and you will see over several hours of natnet downtime in just the past few months. do a search mate. Not only nat net but gfy is a good place to start research on any host for downtime or bad support or anyother info you might want to find.

that's simply not true. take your own suggestion and do that search yourself

and you completely disregarded my own stated experience of 5+ years being a natnet customer, which supercedes your perception.

I never said you DID use a 3rd party dns service i just said "Maybe" since mojohost and natnet were down at the same time and somone else above in this thread suggested it. As a matter of fact after a bit of searching I see where brad said you have some internap router appliance that is supossed to route traffic through the fastest routes, well that obviously failed this time. Anyway I hear mojo is a decent host so i'm sure this was not a common occurance. good luck mate.

and you completely disregarded my own stated experience of 5+ years being a natnet customer, which supercedes your perception.

Dude i'm not intending to keep bumping this thread and bash on natnet as they are supossed to be a decent host, but you obviously lack the skills to do a good search on a message board. Anyway glad you are happy with your host, that's the way it should be.

i've been with natnet for almost 6 years now and can only recall one time in that time the service was down due to issues.
In the spirit of full disclosure, we went for almost 5 years without an issue, however last year we had a couple of issues, one was due to a massive DDOS/dns reflection attack that affected not only us but some other hosts including one larger well known host. The second issue was a firewall issue that took down part of our network for almost 8 hours due to the fact that we had to touch EVERY server to remove the firewall rules.

We work very hard at giving our customers the best possible hosting and support that there is. We have a culture here of taking care of the customer at any and all cost, and any customer of ours will tell you that we treat customers as partners...but at the end of the day, we still have humans working here that can make mistakes. We have hardware that can fail (yes - even redundancy can fail. You can read at least once a month about a data center that lost power because the redundant generators didn't come up or some software designed to run the redundant hardware failed).

Every host at one time or another is going to have downtime. In fact, the ONLY way to guarantee full 100% uptime is by having duplicated hardware at either two geographically different data centers or duplicated hardware in a tier 4 data center, (of course, very few customers are willing to pay for either one of those solutions) and even then there are no guarantees that there won't be a DDOS attack or a network issue to take you down. Those hosts that did not have any downtime this year either may have had some last year or will have some next year. You rarely see hosts bashing other hosts about downtime because they know darned well it could have been them. It's just a matter of time. The difference is that the GOOD hosts don't hide from it, provide full disclosure and do whatever it takes to make sure that whatever caused it cannot happen again.

Of course, we seem to have our fair share of haters and I find it interesting that it always seems to be the same people and that these same people do not seem to be in threads about other "certain" hosts going down. I wonder why that is?

incorrect- again. i did several searches- "natnet" "national net" "natnet down" and "national net down"

the result are absolutely in line with what Bill states here-
