Nat Net suck?

This is copied from a GAY board that you're far to butch and straight to ever have read

This is not an attack on Nat Net, I actually want an answer...

<start copy>

I've had the "you must use Nat Net" convo with so many adult webmasters. Simons posted something in the British Bucks thread that just brought back to me the reason I'm not with them.

I always thought they were to good to be true, because so many people rave about them.

I was eventually sold and almost moved to them, when on GFY I saw that loads of people were having issues. Over a two week period+ it was thread after thread saying they were down.

They do seem to be down a awful lot?

I admit their support is amazing. But what about their uptime?

(btw this is an honest question thread, not a "let's fight" thread. I want to know if their uptime is an issue as I would still move to them, if persuaded, the next time they do the deal match)

Been with Nat Net for going on 2 yrs now, never had any serious issues. As far as downtime it has been minimal and never for a extended period of time.

How are their prices too high? They will price match (at least when I signed on) your current hosting plan.

As I wrote on the other board....

I can tell you my personal experience with NatNet. I used to be techie #1 with hosting stuff, but since hosting my sites with NatNet, all I need to do these days is put in a ticket and wait for like 2 or 3 minutes (literally) and the work is done for me. I do this for everything, from setting up a new wordpress blog to recompiling php. No matter what I ask for, the techies always respond with a super friendy answer and I always get the initial response within 2 or 3 minutes (sometimes the actual work like the recompile does take longer of course).

Not only do they do that, but every once in a while I get a friendly email telling me that they are proactively fixing a problem that I did not even know existed. Like the other day, one of the disks in my raid array was giving warnings and about to fail, so they swapped in a new disk and started the rebuild and did all this work proactively. I know why because Bill told me about the proactive monitoring system they run which cost them mega-bucks to develop, but saves their customer's proverbial ass so often that it paid for itself within no time at all.

So from my pov, NatNet provide extremely stable hosting, using fast bandwidth and proactive tools to provide extremely good support. I can tell you for certain you ain't gonna get that from theplanet or serverbeach or hostgator or quite a few other hosts, and its that type of stability and support that lets small companies like HunkMoney grow and become a success, cuz it lets me focus on the business and not worry about the techie stuff.

And to be perfectly clear and upfront, I used to run my own hosting company which was sold to NatNet in Mar 07, and I am no longer connected to NatNet (other than being a very happy client).

cheers,
Luke

As I recall you are the same nick that baited me one time before and made me say some stuff that was totally unprofessional but I am not going to make that mistake again....I will answer your question just as if it were from a real prospective customer......

Hi Marc....

I truly hope that the people who have already posted in this thread have answered your question considering they are some of the brightest minds in this business but I will expand on it just a little bit. In a nutshell downtime is a concern for every hosting company in the business. I do not know of a single host that has 100% uptime so the goal is to do everything within your power to minimize it and eliminate what you can. NationalNet has had multiple years that we have gone with no real downtime....we have also had years where we had a few hours of downtime. Each time we have learned and we have grown from it. Each time we have spent insane amounts of money to make sure that the same mistake does not hit us again.

In fact, if you haven't seen the thread yet, you should check out the thread on our new data center ( http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?t=916502 ). Millions and millions of NationalNet dollars have gone into building a true, state of the art internet data center for our customers. Will these many millions of dollars guarantee no future downtime? Nope, but it will eliminate many of the potential problems facing many of our competitors.

So, in a nutshell, Marc....we will continue to work as hard for our customers as we have for the past 13 years and we will let them speak for us.

Thanks for your question and if you would like to see the new data center or if you would just like to talk hosting feel free to contact me and I will be happy to answer any questions that you may have.

Warmest Regards,
Tony Morgan
CEO
NationalNet, Inc.

Last week I put in a request to add a new domain name to my server and set up a db for wordpress, and they installed wordpress for me without asking - which was sweet. Pretty neat way of doing business really.

Before my server was moved on July 20th, I had an uptime of about 300+ days. Extremely stable and they're great at fixing problems. No complaints here.

With no proof why does it matter what some guy says on some forum? Before I moved to NatNet I read up as much as I could and tried to find all the negative things said about them on all the major adult and hosting forums. Most of what I found is some downtime in 2008 I believe. Loads of people were having issues for two weeks or more you say? No not from what I read, the longest I saw was a day or two. "I think" some of their servers got hit by a ddos attack then.

Any host can be taken down by a ddos attack if they don't have protection to stop it and quite a few don't. Also just because they have the equipment to stop one of those attacks doesn't mean it's working for the whole network. I know some host charge you if you need ddos protection.

They also had some more downtime in 2008 besides the ddos hit but it wasn't much from what I read, it wasn't anything like you're talking about. If I read they were down for around two weeks I would've never signed up. Since I've been with them (Feb/2009) I don't think my server has been down once. I have a monitoring service that lets me know and it hasn't emailed me yet.

We deal with different hosts every day and NatNet is pretty good.
Not the only good one, of course, we have a list of hosts we like, but
a good one. Here's one thing that surprised me a bit. Often other hosting
companies will pass the buck when you have a question or problem, saying
"not our problem, talk to the Strongbox people". There have been a couple
of hosting companies, including NatNet, who have called us, saying "we're
working with a customer and we have a question about Strongbox ... ".

I like that. I feel that particularly if the webmaster isn't technically inclined,
once you talk to the tech people at ANY company involved, they should very
often contact the tech people from any other companies and resolve your
problem. If you ask us about something and the answer needs to come from
your web host, or from NATS, from MAS or whoever, WE will often contact the
web host or MAS or whoever directly and get you taken care of. I think that's
much better than bouncing the webmaster around, us telling you to talk to the
host, the host telling you to talk to CCBill, CCbill telling you to talk to NATS ...
NatNet, or at least some of their employees, seem to agree with us and will
talk to whomever is necesary to get the webmaster taken care of. To me that's
an example that shows the corporate "attitude" of NatNet - take care of the
webmaster, even if that means going the extra mile.

Disclaimer:
Having said all of that, there are of course times when webmasters simply contact
the wrong company and the best way to get them taken care of is to point them
in the right direction, and we all have limited time, so I'm sure that NatNet, like us,
will say "we can't help you with that, but company X can" when it's appropriate.

We've used several 'well known' hosts over the last 6 years and none of them come close to the support of NatNet.

I've had emails from them saying 'we found a problem but have fixed it now' while i was sleeping. Most other hosts i'd have to contact myself once I saw the problem and lost that downtime.

There ticket response time is also superb at any time/day/night/weekend....

I have been with NN since November and had my server down twice.

1st. some kind of DDOS attack on the entire network.
2nd. yesterday, when server was changing places.

The best host I've been with so far, pity I can't issue my support tickets via email (hate logging into the panel every time). Do something about this guys :-)

That's the usual bullshit with these "hip" or "popular" hosts like mojohost, nat net, etc.

Idiots hype it up, and other idiots sign up for it.

Actually you responded to someone else in a very unprofessional manner, I told you your reply sucked and you agreed with that assesment. I didn't bait you

Here is that very thread btw: http://www.gfy.com/fucking-around-and-business-discussion/856593-natnet.html

Lets be clear, If Nat Net do their price match again I will jump on it, but I had concerns that I've seen threads saying they were down and it stuck in my mind - threads like the one posted.

I'm reassured by the replies I have recieved here. But you need to check your facts.

We moved to them 2 weeks ago. After their 2 lead techs looked over our servers and confirmed the move would be "seamless" we had days of issues where certain features didn't work on our sites or permissions on files didn't get moved etc.
When we finally got moved and stable, we received an email saying we were being moved.

....

Yes, we just moved to their service and then a week later they scheduled us to move to their new DC. They knew they bought a new datacenter, why not tell us to wait a week so we didn't have dual downtime? This really fucking irks me.

Their support guys are fast, friendly and efficient. Bill is wicked cool, and EXTREMELY blunt in a good way. He won't bullshit you.

But that move issue to me was really annoying. Not only that but when I did ask my sales rep why he didn't tell me about the move and why we couldn't have just waited a single week, I never received a reply - though I received very speedy replies when he was trying to land the account.

All of that considered, we are glad we moved and everything is 100% now so I have no complaints.

Why did I post this then? I find the "I have been with X company for 19 years and they are the godfathers of my children!" posts to be fucking annoying. So I am posting a true experience.

Did we have issues? Yes. Were they resolved? Yes. Are we happy we made the move and Nationalnet is our new host? Yes.

Did we have issues? Yes. Were they resolved? Yes. Are we happy we made the move and Nationalnet is our new host? Yes.
Server moves will throw issues. Permissions are likely to cause a major headache. That, along with death and taxes, is a part of life.

Hi Brad,

Your sales guy didn't email you about the move question because I told him not to - because I wanted to email and explain (which I did). The only email address I had was the one in mynatnet which I used. I guess that didn't go to you

If you would like to email me at bill AT nationalnet DOT com I'll be happy to re-send that explanation to you.

Thanks

-- Bill

You know what, I'm pretty pissed off. Not only did I defend them in that thread saying it was 30 mins not 1 hour that they were down, but I also agreed with his reply saying that they had a decent record until their current (at the time) issues.

You guys are the big adult host, you have to expect people to ask publicly if you're decent host or if it's all hype. Your not a tiny company, you're the big host that most people seem to use.

I've never had an issue with anything at NatNet that wasn't usually resolved in minutes.

If you want to mail me you can at [email protected]

That sounds fair to me, Marc...and based on that I will do you one better....I will do a special Price Match sale just for you right here and right now.

In fact, while typing this reply I have an even better idea....you send me your current invoice from your current provider and I will drop 50% off of it for 12 months. YES HALF!! In exchange, you agree to come to this board and give an HONEST and OPEN opinion of our service every month for those 12 months. As everyone can see from the thread you linked to, you have called me out before and would not have any problem doing it again and I am so completely confident that my company can make you happy that I am willing to stake my reputation on it. Based on what I have seen, if I can make you a true NatNet believer then I can handle any customer out there.

Whaddaya say?

So you will give me the same machine (at least) and bandwidth for half the price? For 12 months? And in return I post a thread on GFY each month saying honestly what I think about it?

I didn't pay a setup fee on my current host so I won't pay one now. And they did the move so I assume you can by ssh? They offer a control panel but it's dire so I'd rather have what you guys offer than that.

It won't be that hard to make me a believer. Just do what everyone else here says you do.

If that's OK, you have yourself a deal!

hit me up [email protected] or ICQ tomorro 191127710

I'm off to bed now

I'm up for this if you are!

I am also very concerned about the "seamless" move all hosts say that though its
part of their schpeel , there is no such thing i would say there will be issues almost 95% of the time unless you dont have much on your servers

Yes, we can...we do it for practically all new customers

We don't offer a control panel for our Managed Hosting customers (but we do have one for unmanaged ones)....we would rather be your control panel. Whatever you need, we will take care of it for you.

That sounds reasonable and fair...but we would do that even if we were not being "tested".

Thanks, Marc, and I look forward to having you be a part of the NationalNet Family!!

I have NatNet's back here, too. After 10 years of great service, I have not one complaint. I highly recommend NatNet to anyone that wants quality hosting.

I couldn't agree with this more and I will have a talk with my sales guy about this. I personally never promise a "seamless" move but what I do promise is that if there ARE issues, with our 5 minute response time guarantee, we're only 5 minutes away from getting it corrected

Is there any way to move files/directories from one server to another and keep permissions intact?

Yes I believe you can do so with rsync. But if the server isn't running the exact same software it may require permissions to be different and cause scripts to not work. Although NatNet is willing to fix any problems like that.

National Net is the best host I have been with so far. They have always answered my tickets within 2-3 minutes and always been very friendly.

About downtime it have been minimal. I have been with Natnet since January 2008 where they had one of those price match sales.

Here are my uptime stats for the time I have been with them.
Note that the high number of failed checks for July 2009 is because of the move to new data center, and I was informed about it in advance.
My server was only down for two hours so they really made a quick move

2009

2008

Can't complain about these uptime numbers.
Hope you will be just as happy with Natnet.. you got a really good offer there
