Health nuts... recommend a diet to me

I have to admit that my diet needs much improvement. I eat on the go a lot, and even at home it's a lot of starches and red meats. We're not huge on fruit and vegetables, but we manage to get some in but definitely not enough.

Anyone know of a fairly easy diet that doesn't involve a ton of prep every day?

I suggest the healthy eating diet where you eat around 1800 calories a day (depending on body type etc etc may be more or a bit less) and don't eat fried/salty/fast/shitty food.

Cut the sugars, remove high fructose corn syrup from the diet, buy less pre-packed and pre-made/cooked/canned items of all types, replace your on the go food with different fruits, dried snacks, and nuts.

It's not dieting, it's shopping differently.

Cook lean meats like chicken breasts, ground turkey & chicken. Each package of meat or package of three breasts can usually make 4-6 meals for a single person when you eat it with a vegetable and a piece of fruit. Also eat tuna and fresh fish there are your five basic lean meats, one of which you should eat with every meal. That's how I structure my diet. For breakfast I might have half of a chicken breast with a little flavoring on it, a half of a sprouted grain English muffin, and a banana, washed down with hot tea. Then for lunch I might have a can of tuna and some brown rice or some fried eggplant and some grapes or watermelon. For dinner perhaps a home made taco with ground chicken, shredded lettuce and tomato bits in a shell made from sprouted grain tortillas and some blueberries. I also mix it up and make green veggies like spinach & green beans to go with my diners on alternate days. Drink water and tea, no diet soda or anything like that. And exercise every day lifting weights and some cardio.

Mix up about a 3/4 cup of cereal (thats 1 serving, I use Total), with 42g's (palm full) chopped walnuts and a 42g box of raisins (they come in a 12 pack). It makes really good snacking. Walnuts give you good omega 3 they say, and the raisins equates to "1 serving" of fruit. The cereal is loaded with stuff too. It's a super addicting mix, just fair warning. Better to use a cereal with flakes. If you use square or shaped cereal, the nuts and raisins will fall to the bottom and be boring.

BTW: when you find the aisle that has raisins, check out all the dried fruits. Dried apricots are awesome.. lots of fruits are really great dried and totally snackable. Plus they wont rot in a bowl causing you to curse yourself!

I buy boneless skinless breasts in a big family pack to save money. But since I live alone, I'm stuck with so many frozen breasts that I decided to start poaching them. So I take a few breasts and put them in a medium pan with water to cover them by about 1/4 inch or so. Season the water with salt, pepper, whatever you have on hand. Bring to boil then drop the temp down to as low as you can get it for 3 minutes then turn off the burner and cover. Let sit 20 mins or so and it'll be done (check with temp. probe that it's 160f). Now you can put the meat in a container in the fridge and use it up over a few days time.

Makes great lean sandwich, add to salads, cook some noodles and throw some meat in there.. etc etc. Lots you can do with plain old chicken.

I've been reading lately that animal protein is basically terrible for you and an essentially vegan diet (no dairy or meat) not only is better for you but helps to reverse disease like cancer and diabetes.

Awesome advice there Tom, thank you. Definitely going to try the snack mix.

Actually just starting this today so I will let you know how it works out, but a couple of us at the office have pulled together to have someone come in and make fresh raw food meals ....so at least we have one healthy meal a day prepared for us.

If you eat on the go, then just stop at grocery stores or healthier places. It only takes a minute to run into a grocery store and buy an apple. You're not going to save any time sitting in line at a fast food joint.

If you stop at fast food joints. Stop at deli's and such, get sandwiches or healthier foods. The same applies for ANY restaurant. Just eat healthier, get the low-carb/low-fat stuff. Think salads and soups more. And most if not all restaurants these days have low-fat type sections on their menus. A side salad and cup of soup at Chilis is like $5 and extremely healthy. Or their black bean veggie burger is to die for, it's like black bean soup in hamburger form. But even a regular hamburger is fine to eat - just eat half the meal and certainly don't get fried foods as the side. Panera has vegan & lowfat meals, a bowl of soup and an apple instead of bread = really filling meal & like $4-5.

It really comes down to eating often, drinking lots of water, and eating smaller portions.

Then all you have to do is start picking the healthier options off menus. You can still go to pretty much all the same places, but think healthier. You want taco bell? You don't need the $7 meal that comes with a large soda (very bad), nachos, two tacos, and a burrito. That's insane. Get one taco, and one small burrito, and two glasses of water. That's cutting down calories by like 75%, and price by almost 75%. Then, like 2-3 hours later eat a banana or apple and two glasses of water.

Eat often, Eat smaller portions, Eat healthier, & Drink lots of water.

oats, tuna, chicken/steak/fish obviously all very easy to cook in their raw forms, i find myself setting apart 2-3 hours on the weekend to prepare and cook most of my meals for the week, to be honest with you thats the easiest and most efficient way your going to get variety as well as quality out of your food

I have dropped 30lbs with all diet and no gym in a 4 month period. High protein, very low carbs, no sugar, no soda, coffee in the morning and when i get sweet cravings. I snack on mixed nuts when i do get hungry. Not dying before my daughter is a teenager becomes a serious motivator.

I do not use any diet supplements what so ever. Diet Supplements are a good jump start, but become a serious crutch and loose their effectiveness after 3 week as your body gets used to them. This i know very well as i have had Max Muscle and multiple supplement sponsorships in the past being a pro Athlete. I got paid to try a lot of different things and write reports on if it worked and if it did what it calmed. Just about everything that claims to be a quick fix to achieving long term results is BULLSHIT!!! I can tell you a lot about a lot on supplements and work out drinks. It would be its own thread.

Diet is a lifestyle. Too many people do it temporary and get fat all over again. Allow yourself one cheat meal one day a week and it makes hard diet easier.

That is me in my avitar. I was 200 ripped and used to run 6 days a week 45 min a day. Diet and gym was my lifestyle, my whole life. Then i had knee surgery and was on crutches for 5 months. Fell into a depression and gained 90lbs. (i guess thats better than addiction to pain killers).

I really never believed that i could ever ballon to 290lbs. I never ate so bad, just quit paying attention what was going into my body and could not go to the gym.

Both knees are in pain because the cartilage is warring out in both because of so many years of running and training. Im always going to be in pain, but as i am learning the 30 pound loss has really helped a lot in the pain dept.

Today i will actually be going back to the gym to do very light weights. I have no doubt that i will be a lean 205 by next summer.

Remember, diet and exercise is a lifestyle and if you are not willing to accept that, dont bother starting either because it will be a waste of time.

I will answer any questions anyone ever has about supplements, diet and exercise. I have extensive 1st hand knowledge on all 3.
