The worst thing about Thailand is the generally low quality of foreigners it attracts.

In Thailand you can find what you are looking for..... you can be a monger and drink, party and bang all day and all night, be involved in gf ripping you off or locking you out drama, get drugged and mugged by ladyboys,or you can go about your business or enjoy a peaceful family life in a nice house.

I started in Japan where the women are truly beautiful. I've never been into the dark tropical look that is found in SE Asia. I prefer white skin and a classic Asian look.

To each his own. I've lived in Thailand and while I find the girls cute, I prefer Asian girls to South East Asian or Island girls. The two are not the same.

I believe you. They say 1 in 5 tourists to Thailand are sex tourists, so that means the other 4 keep their cocks in their pants. You are 1 of those 4.

Sadly, too many guys just go to Thailand, hit Bangkok and maybe Pattaya. A few hit Phuket and Samui, and that's it. There is so much more to see and most people simply don't see it.

If you have the money you can send your kids to international schools. There are so many rich locals in Thailand. Much richer than most people here I would say.

Here is why, in my opinion, Thailand falls very short of being a Paradise. Relationships.

Now I know that might sound crazy.

But really, if you are an expat, apart from your girlfriend (if you have one) and her immediate family, how many Thais would you consider real friends? How many would you trust and would count on whatever happened or even have meaningful discussions with?

In places equally as poor as Thailand, like Colombia or Cuba, after a couple of months, people will have taken you in like one of theirs. In Thailand you'll always be an alien, on the long term, this has a huge impact on your quality of life.

My friend who lives there has a small palace on the beach in Bang Sara. Just go to Ratchada strip. Those karaoke joints for the locals ain't cheap. thats the problem i have with moving to new country, meaningful relationships.. yeah you can go to thailand and bang 10x girls a day, but how many TRUE friends will you have that will be there for you?

can you get by on english with friends.. what i mean is down here in panama, you can get some friends who speak english, BUT when you want to hang out in a group settings, they all speak spanish so you feel completely lost..

in thailand, if you get a group of friends who are locals, do they speak english when they hang out in groups?

nah. all you need to do is hook up with some ex-pats that are already established. ko lipe at southern most tip of Thailand, for example, *IS* paradise. i know a married couple (both white) who have ran a bar there for 5 years. now they have a huge sail boat and are doing tours. i lived there for around 4 months (6 months total) about 2 years ago, they hooked me up with all the non-tourist deals. i even worked at their bar a little bit, just for shits and giggles (i don't need to work), never really had much of clue what i was doing, but i was master of the ipod lol. we went again last year for 3 months, spend most of our time on ko bulon, tarutao and lipe. i think bulon is going to be the next lipe. totally undeveloped, cheap as hell, no motorized vechicles, endless deserted beaches, perfect water, and there is only one bar and two restaurants on the entire island. we met a (western) guy, who just totally dropped out of society, built a simple hut, lives off the land fishing and gardening every day. he gives some of his fish to one of the resturaunts, and in return, they give him the land for his hut and garden. wears nothing but a leather thong. pretty fucking funny. but anyway, the point is, there are options, you just have to seek them out. pattaya and phuket suck. not trying to offend, but, well, yeah. suamui is good for a couple of days, same with phangan (everyone, once in his or her life should attend a full, or even better and less talked about, half moon party), but most of the gulf of Thailand (east coast) is a tourist trap now. ko tao is still pretty cool, that is about as good as it gets on the east coast imho. if you want east coast, head to Cambodia: sihanoukville. awesome place, tons of ex-pats there.

as far as the muslims in the south go, i would avoid the suntun [sic] area, etc. boring as hell.

Nana, Soi Cowboy, Patpong and all those other places are low class. Ratchada is where it's at. Yes, you spend more money but the service is exceptional and the quality is unmatched if you get the higher end girls, magazine models, Thai Penthouse girls and so on.

Back when I lived there, that is where I would get my hookers from. Why waste time with "jeppers" and star fish, when you can have the best?

Of coz they speak Thai.....it would be weird for them to speak in English among themselves. If you are in a foreign country...of coz it is up to you to learn their language. So if a French dude visits US, you expect him to continue to speak in French among your friends? Of coz he will have to learn English to blend in. You also need to eat the local food and try to follow as much as the local culture. You can't be living there and expect to have all the things you have in your own country. I bet Thai people will complain there's lack of good Tom Yum in USA or Europe.

I've been here 8 years, was in Laos just last week

What I am saying is that if your idea of paradise is an immaculate beach you'll have a much easier time finding it in Borneo, Polynesia or even Sri Lanka, not that there is none here but paradise, after a while, is more than just a pretty scenery.

They do yell and shout a lot, and as soon as you sit down and buy a drink, most go about ignoring you and chatting amongst themselves or screaming at other guys to sit and buy a drink. So who is the hunter and who is the hunted in there? That section is on my list of least favorite bars to frequent. My buddie found a companion at one, but not so hot.

Rock star is a decent description. As long as you are in some areas throwing money around you are popular. Then have your money run out, you are a leper. It's too easy for most of us to be confused and think they really love us.

Now I know that might sound crazy. But really, if you are an expat, apart from your girlfriend (if you have one) and her immediate family, how many Thais would you consider real friends? How many would you trust and would count on whatever happened or even have meaningful discussions with? In places equally as poor as Thailand, like Colombia or Cuba, after a couple of months, people will have taken you in like one of theirs. In Thailand you'll always be an alien, on the long term, this has a huge impact on your quality of life.
