Canon shooters - when did your shutter fail?

The shutter on my 1DsII failed at 38k which I was not happy about. (The specs say 150k)

It cost $AUD750/~$USD690 to fix which I was also not happy about. Seems people in the USA only pay about $200 for the same thing.

When did yours fail and how much did it cost?

I have had canons since 2002 and have never had a shutter pack it in. I had a 1ds mark2 and it performed beautifully. That is a battleship camera. I beat the living crap out of it. Never had an issue.
Shutters were a problem with some cameras because the original shutters were designed for film cameras and no one ever shot that many images because they cost too much. But at the price of fixing it, I would have just bought a new camera. Its the way things go in photography. However, you got 38k of great quality images, so you haven't lost a thing. But technology has moved on. I currently shoot with a much less expensive 5D and it is the most fun I have ever had with a still camera.

edit: that is the first 1D shutter failure that I have ever heard of.

I've heard stories of premature shutter failures being replaced out of warranty before but Canon have now gone hardball and refuse to do it, saying that it's a mechanical device, the specified figures are average, blah blah blah.

I do photography as a hobby, and I look after my camera, so it's a bit of a surprise to see my shutter fail 25% into its rated life.

I'm more pissed at the price discrepancy between what it cost in AU and what it costs in the USA. It's a monopoly AFAIK, there's no aftermarket shutters available, so they can charge what they want.

I don't know if you can do this, but I signed up for the Canon Professional Services and you get much better treatment. Here is the criteria. If you can qualify it is so worth it.

CREDENTIALS: Eligibility for CPS requires that sufficient evidence to substantiate your professional status be submitted. Please use the following guidelines:

I. WORKING PRESS:
? Three tear sheets of work published within the past year.
? A copy of current press credentials.
? A letter on letterhead from editor or bureau chief stating your staff or contract position.

II. FREELANCE:
Canon understands that this is a broad category encompassing many different fields of photography. Therefore, please provide us with any four of the items listed below that best illustrates your particular field of photography as proof of eligibility for CPS.

? Three tear sheets of work published within the past year.
? A copy of current press credentials.
? A letter on letterhead from editor or bureau chief stating your staff or contract position.
? Samples of studio letterhead, promo cards, brochures, price lists, etc.
? Three samples of recent work.
? Two letters from clients stating they have used your photographic services within the past year.
? Two copies of P.O.s, invoices, etc. from clients within the past year.
? Copies of current membership cards from professional photo organizations (ASMP, APP., APNY, etc.).

III. COMMERCIAL / STUDIO:
? Samples of studio letterhead, promo cards, brochures, price lists, etc.
? Three samples of recent work.
? Two letters from clients stating they have used your photographic services within the past year.
? Copies of current membership cards from professional photo organizations (ASMP, APP., APNY, etc.).

IV. GOVERNMENT I EDUCATION:
? Letter from supervisor / department head stating your position on staff and the type of photographic work done.
? Copy of agency / company ID card.
? Three samples of current work.
? Copies of current membership cards from photo organizations (ASMP, NPPA, PPA, etc.).

V. MISCELLANEOUS:
? Please send as many credentials as possible to verify your professional standing and a letter stating the kind of photography done.

I don't currently qualify for CPS because I do this as a hobby... the guy there said that they'll be changing the CPS requirements soon because more people are going "prosumer", buying 5D or even 1 series bodies even though they don't make a living from it. I'm one of those people.

I asked out of curiosity and he said the only benefit in this case would have been a 20% discount on the shutter part (not labour), which is around $AUD50/$USD45

you get no discount on the amateur cameras like the 5d. Where it really pays off is lenses. It has to be real professional. That makes sense to me. When you are a working photographer, you don't want canon jammed up with guys who don't make their living out of taking pictures. Canon wants professionals running around with their gear and are more likely to be seen on national media than a guy who does it for fun.

can't speak for canons but i've had a nikon shutter go at 2k, then they didnt fix it cause it was a "grey market" nikon bought online from soniccameras.com (a ripoff i should have googled first) it came with usa warranty card and everything and they didnt honor it for repair. i sold that broke ass shit on ebay for parts and bought another body

I don't have a 5D - my 1DsII was the flagship model at the time it was introduced. Can't buy anything more expensive than that.

As I said above, CPS requirements are changing in the near future, in Australia anyway.

Sorry to hear that dude, never had a Canon shutter go out on me. I always stick with Canon, I've seen and worked with other people's Nikon's and its just not the same. Way too early to go out but too long after a warrant

5D failed the first time around 350k if I recall correctly. Cost me almost $700.00 for the repair. Complete replacement of the shutter box assembly. After roughly 120k more, it failed a second time and cost me another $700.00ish.

One of my 20D's had a shutter issue around 250k but the repair did not require complete shutter box replacement. That repair cost me somewhere between $200-$300.

I haven't had that on any of my Canons yet. I only do around 50-70K before selling, so that might be it. I have an amateur 500D and a MarkIII I just bought two weeks ago. The 40D and 5D I had before are still without problems, from what my buddy told me.

38K sounds very low but over a period of 5 years $700 doesn't seem too bad to get it back to spec and shooting again. Still I would be just as frustrated if that happened to me. I have always shot Nikon slr and have been fortunate enough to replace my slr's before the shutters crapped out.
