I worked with a very good friend in the past and I have to say that it was an overall positive experience. I knew him and his work ethic and he knew mine. We also had great working chemistry and while we were casual when relating to work, we worked as a team and got things done.

If it is a good friend and someone with character I would not hesitate

Bad idea. Ive done it before and its tough to order around a friend, much less get mad or raise your voice if he/she does a bad job.

I had a friend a few weeks ago that was having money troubles and asked for a job. I told him I didnt have anything for him and just gave him a loan (a loan I was 100% prepared to not get back, that way if he never returned it there was no hard feelings )

I hired two very good friends to work at my company...

We had an awesome run of 4 years and even when we had to close down shop there were no hard feelings and they both told me it was the best job they ever had and they wouldn't have traded the time for anything.

It can work, you just have to know how/where to draw the lines. My business partner was also a good friend (and still is).

Bad idea. It ranks up there with loaning friends money.

They feel that because you are their friend, they can get away with more. Even friends who were the most dependable diligent mofo's I have ever known... at a regular job.... turned into dudes who just did not want to work.

Oh, they still wanted their 100% pay for work. But a lot of weeks barely put in 40% of what was needed. Same for a friend who wanted to help on photo shoots. Then would call out 4 out of 5 times because of some chick he was fucking or hung over.

It is simply not a good idea.

I've had the same experience.. eventhough it's not true every time it's certainly not worth the risk.

Of course it would depend on you and your friend, and how much time you currently spend together.

From the postings, it seems a case of "your mileage may vary" - but I'd suggest going into it setting some ground rules that you both agree to, that way you can establish the expectations, etc.

haha oh man. its all situational really. its like hiring anyone else, you judge them based on their credentials. i'm lucky, i've hired some of my friends and its worked out fine as well as hired new people and they became my friends. i know some people will always have "it can work" or "terrible idea" but you really should just look past the friendship and see if they are qualified for it.

if they are, they won't take advantage of your friendship

One reply no! I had such a case at one time that I had employed the best friend, of friend but after the year of the time our roads branched at the work and in the friendship. Generally I had the considerable problem in order to tell him they aren't sending to this work, not which things I turned a blind eye to and it was bad. Therefore I will never already employ nobody with whom we friendly relationships.

on another hand if you now him as solid, responsible, hard working person - it maybe worth giving him a shot, as long as he has head on his shoulders and hiring party as well

if you don't know how is he at work, be very cautious and set reasonable 'training' period if you decide to hire.

Ive had it go both ways. It really depends. You and your friend have to have the same type of work ethics, and realize that when at work the friendship can't interfere with the job at hand.
