Junk may be less expense in dollars for you today, but far more expensive in dollars and health in the long term. Is it REALLY "too expensive" when seen that way?

The intentions when grocery shopping are good, but then reality kicks in after a long ass day and its much easier to do drive-thru for instant gratification then go home and cook a meal, clean the kitchen, etc.

Weekends I make up for it tho, lots of grilling, healthier choices, etc. I think it comes down to a factor of time vs. hunger.

quickness of needing something and lazyness to cook basically.

for a while I was eating healthy, but it gets to be a pain in the ass if you want something quick to eat... plus sometimes im so hungry that ill eat just about anything and then end up getting pizza or some fast food and it all goes to shit

I haven't had a healthy diet in 3 years.

I just don't care. Too lazy to cook for myself. When I go out and eat though (unless I'm just grabbing food quick) I typically try to eat towards the healthier side of the menu.

I never really understand this argument. In fact, I don't believe it.

Prepackaged foods are expensive. You're paying for convenience. The trick with eating healthy is you actually have to get off your ass and do some cooking/food preparation your self. Most people do not want to do that.

A nice fresh apple will cost anywhere between $0.50/$0.80. That's what any other kind of junk snack will cost as well. Vegetables are pretty fair priced, canned vegetables are quite affordable.

Protein tends to depend on where you live. I can buy pork and chicken for a great price, both are quite lean these days. Fish in my area can be expensive, but I do buy it because it's so good and so healthy for you.

Pasta and rice are dirt cheap. Now they aren't the best thing in the world for you if you eat them a lot, but they aren't bad either. Get some whole-grain pasta and you are set.

Water is cheap. Add a water filter or a reverse osmosis system to your faucet to get it even cheaper if you live in a bad water area.

You can even bake your own snacks pretty cheaply. Make your own cookies, brownies, cakes. Once you have the core ingredients you can pump out a cake pretty inexpensively.

Why don't people eat more healthy? Convenience.

Grocery stores today all carry some sort of prepared food. Whole rotisseire chicken for a couple bucks, etc. Still better than fast food, but you *do* have to park and walk.

Here's a 5 minute recipe for ya.
Throw chicken breasts with tomatoes and onion in a slow cooker for 7 hours. Little salt pepper basil garlic. Done. Meals for a week. So tender you could cut it with a spoon.
Small slow cooker do 2 breasts, large cooker do 4. Cut them up if you want to cook it quicker.

what about marketing? how big of a role does that play re: why people do not eat better?

it does not seem that healthy foods are marketed as convenient whilst many unhealthy foods are. moreover, so many health foods are marketed as part of a *lifestyle* which turns many people off imo.

a lot of peeps do not want to be considered a granola head eh.

I think I eat alot healthier than I used to. But when I didnt I think it was a cost and time issue. Either I just wanted to grab something fast or I didnt feel like spending $8 on a salad for lunch. I have found a happy medium by preparing more food for myself.

Its all about convenience for me, if I got all the time in the world to cook I eat real healthy. When I get busy I have to eat on the run and that is just never going to be healthy.

Plus when I get to drinking I cant resist the greasy food.

lazy, they don't care, lack of will power, healthy food doesn't taste good, too expensive, inconvenient... in a hurry it is faster to do drive through vs going to prepare a healthy meals. thats all the "reasons" that people will give you.

I make a good effort to eat healthy personally, but far from doing it all the time.

the odd thing about the *convenience* reason is the fact that the majority of people skip breakfast. there's nothing more convenient than pouring some cereal in a bowl and splashing some milk in it.

Total myth. It's not even about learning to cook properly, it's more about training your mind and palate to appreciate the taste of healthy foods, and believe me the range of tastes in natural foods, grains, spices, seasonings, vegetables, well-prepared lean meats, fruits, etc are VASTLY superior to any junk food out there. Vastly.

Best post in the thread so far.

I have no trouble eating a healthy balanced diet, and I do all my own grocery shopping and cooking. Grains/cereals, fruit, veggies, quality cuts of lean meats in a variety -- beef, pork, chicken, fish, turkey, whatever. Worried about cost? Try adding up the cost over a year of hitting the drive-thru, buying all that pre-packaged frozen food for your microwave or oven, and all those chips, sodas etc. Some of you would shit yourselves if you knew what you were spending. I'll take shopping for healthy groceries any day.

Marketing is huge. In fact I was thinking of posting a thread about it but now I don't have to. Fact is, present day humans have never before in history been so bombarded by junk food advertising. On TV, radio, on billboards, bus benches, it's everywhere. Nearly ever commercial break on every tv channel contains something, a big sub loaded with processed meat and cheese and mayo, or McDeath's with their McCrap, or some flame broiled whopper with onion rings on it, or Sonic burgers, or In 'n Out burgers, or the latest insanely fattening meal special on at Friendly's or some fish in batter place and on and on and on they go.

It's no surprise at all that there's an obesity crisis going on in North America.

But marketing on store items? Like chips and pop as opposed to all the stuff I said? I really don't care how anything like that is marketed, I simply know what's good for me and I know what I like, and I buy it. If I'm concerned about price I clip some coupons. My grocery store puts out a flyer with a 15% off coupon on all purchases of $100 or more, about once every 1-2 months. I use those as often as possible, and have probably saved myself a few thousand bucks over the last 20 years or so.

Do I do the fast food thing? Hell yes, but not all that often. I think I've hit a Wendy's or McD's maybe once in the last year. I order food in maybe once or twice a month, but that isn't always pizza or KFC either. Often it's Chinese food that is admittedly not the healthiest but I order several dishees that are loaded with vegetables.

Breakfast is a lot easier for me, some chocolate almond milk and a scoop of chocolate royale Slim Fast in the Magic Bullet, yummy and filling. I have the ingredients for a lot more involved breakfast (fresh spinach, egg whites, etc) but liquid chocolate seems so much more exciting.

I do cereal at night when I have midnight munchies. Chocolate Cheerios rock my socks!

In a previous life, I was a stay at home mom for 7 years and would cook a bunch of entrees on Sunday, (like casseroles) then have it ready to pop in the oven during the week. I need to get back into that pre-planning mode.

Dynamo, are you looking for dietary alternatives?

I have found that whatever I start my morning with, I tend to crave throughout the day. If I have an Apple and some juice, the rest of the day I am all about fresh and water. If I start with a donut and a Red Bull, I'm craving sugar all day.

Your body tends to crave what it gets used to. The "getting used to" part is what's difficult. For me, it's about a week.

good posts in here!

expanding on a couple of comments, the higher price of eating healthy does have SOME basis in fact. fact is, organic products are more expensive than not, by far in some case. hell, i can pay .97c a pound for mass-produced chicken breasts or i can spend $9+ a pound on free range organic raised chicken.

there are some other examples too, not saying it's the rule.

healthy foods are not marketed as convenient either but more importantly, i think *comfort* foods need to be addressed. so many unhealthy foods are advertised to us that way and i know when i am hungry, many times i ask myself what am i hungry for instead of what is a healthy meal to consume.

all of the fast food joints offer healthy meals, right. yet they primarily sell comfort foods- french fries, milk shakes, etc.

Organic is more expensive, absolutely. But not being organic does not mean not healthy. In fact, the term organic has very loose restrictions on it. "Free range" could be considered allowing the chicken out of the cage for three minutes a day, that would classify as "free range".

i've been eating more and more healthy over the last few months and began looking for what i called the perfect meal. one that satisfies all nutritional requirements (without debate and not *fortified* with synthetic/manufactured/processed nutrients and is convenient. i could not really find any that were not at least laden with a sweetener or dairy or meat.

so i've been working with my chef mom and am putting together my own creation that satisfies that goal.

i have also become interested in the whole nutrition/energy thing. i've lost most (all) cravings for any sort of junk food and find myself craving healthy items when i find myself hungry and also notice an increase in energy, alertness, everything when i eat properly.

so many of those things they advertise with comfort foods i am realizing are more valid for nutritious foods!

lately I've been bringing fruits and vegetables to work.. snacking on them all day. sure they have lots of calories but I find myself with a lot more energy and less likely to over eat at lunch (which is my biggest junk food meal temptation normally) So essentially i'm eating less salts, less saturated fats and boosting my fibre/antioxidents intake... plus there is an unlimited amount of combinations too so hasn't gotten old or boring yet..
