Crazy Marketing Concepts - Read -

http://returnmyjedi.com/2010/06/craz...ting-concepts/

Kind of a work in progress...trying to figure out how to apply some of these theories. Should be helpful to you.

Would love comments, suggestions, criticism.

Here is some of my criticism:

1) The site does not talk about the Jedi

2) It does not talk about the levitation skill or the telekinesis skill

3) Pavlov's Dog - that's an interesting experiment. I'll be sure check off this story from my reading list.

4) Interesting read about how moods can cause spontaneous purchases

Very interesting read...thanks.

One part I related to was this ....."a surprise reward caused even more activation in the dopamine neurons. ?

What I try to do is add some sort of surprise bonus product into a sale after its ordered.....i see many other marketing corps/people do the same..so it was interesting to see this part mentioned.

Keep writing more .....

It's a great technique for building relationships with customers, or just plain attempting to retain or shock them. Gamefly, for example, gives you a $5 reward coupon every 3 months you're a customer .... they don't tell you this until you get your first one. Then suddenly "Claim your $5 reward! We love you as a customer!" . Definitely emits a stronger bond than if I was expecting it...more like a "wow, that's really cool they did that" vs. something like "i'm just waiting around for my $5 card...then i'm outta here".

yes and it makes much more sense than teaser deals to attract new customers that piss off loyal customers in the process.

Cool. Good to see another person writing marketing for the porn industry and not cutting and pasting BS non-porn marketing!

One question. How do you imply scarcity for porn. You said you used the technique reliably, do you have an example for me to look at?

"Yes, I believe there is a problem with Tube Sites that “reveal too much.” If a person can fulfill their search for a pleasurable experience on a free tube site with full length videos, they have absolutely no reason to make a purchase of a product. This hurts not only the sponsors, but also the tube site owner him/herself. "

He blames tubes so ruin your full movies tube and make sales!

That's one of the concepts I'm trying to figure out how to apply with porn, I used to very reliably with mainstream marketing. It can be done...I'm just trying to crank the gears with it.

A few ideas, maybe you can give feedback?

- Countdown timer used for "exclusive" deals/content of people that visited from XYZ affiliate? (A custom PHP script could easily and dynamically do this, and I can bet confidently that if the message is personalized, instead of a generic front page landing page, conversions will increase)

- Brand the membership site more as a member's only club (like a private golf course) than just a place to get some porn. I.e. members receive discounts, tickets to AVN's, whatever you can think of that makes it seem exclusive to them. Shit that Joe Consumer only dreams he could have access to.

- Fake a lawsuit. "We're only allowed to show this content for the next 30 days thanks to her lawyers."

- Brazzers does this, if I remember correctly. After you're a member for X amount of days, you get access to HDef videos. Maybe a spin on something like that?

Sorry I don't have solid ideas yet, but like I mentioned in that article...I'm still trying to piece together what I can from it and make it useful.

Haha, to be fair, I'm not blaming tubes for everything, I'm attempting to make sense of it all. As a behavioral marketer...I believe that the half-assed explanation I gave should make some sense. I'm simply trying to explain that I do not believe full content free tube sites can be a long term business model. If what can be learned from the human brain is correct (which we have to assume that current theories about it are true...we have nothing else to go off of), then people will simply learn that they never have to buy an adult product again...just dial up XYZ tube site and away they go.

No money for sponsors = no money for content creators/actors/actresses = no people willing to work for forced lowered industry wages = turning the porn industry into something relative to the US Steel industry. (Maybe I'm wrong though)

This is a great idea...especially if you can use it to sell more of your apps. Someone's going to be more likely to buy something that you can show has been through the testing "ringer" and is now proven to work (as long as you can show this) vs. an app that just has a great sales page.

It'll even work for sponsors...if you can show that recent changes to your site has increased conversions by 30%, 50%, 100%, your affiliates need to do nothing more than get eyeballs on your page to make more money. More money for you as a sponsor, and more money for your affiliates = long term thinking and success.

None of those ideas are really about scarcity, are they? I get that special offers on woot saying 87 left at this price works. But I still fail to see how you can make porn scarce.

I like the idea, just can't see how to make it work...

How about a scarce price point.

Next x people get the site membership for only 20 bucks a month?
First x joins a day gets x discount?
Every day/week/month there is an x minute period when all sales are halfprice?

Its an absolute fact.
Years ago I was a commercial estimator for a huge floor covering company in california. They were so big they hired an in house "color psychologist" to promote high end sales.
Of course at the time many people that worked there thought this was complete b.s.,
but color can play a siginficant part in the act of a sale.

The first think porn needs to do is throw the word "discount" out the window and learn to add value to what you are selling. Why do the poorest people spend the little money they have on the most expenses stuff they can find...Because it has a hell of alot of value to them

Porn needs to learn how to add more value to what it's selling and stop the use car/discount selling approach

Probably the closest to scarcity is the "Fake Lawsuit" idea proposed. My coffee hadn't kicked in yet when I wrote that reply...exclusivity <> scarcity, but it can be used for the same purpose.

I would likely stray from the word discount - for fear of devaluing the brand - but you're on the right track. Maybe we could throw some ideas around on ICQ and come up with something solid?

I'm thinking of scarcity...something more along the lines of...if there's a sale on something I really want, and half the shelves in the store are already gone...that makes me feel like I HAVE to get the damn thing ASAP or I'll miss out (despite them being fully stocked in the back room, and a fresh supply of that product tomorrow)....These mainstream 'gurus' have been trying this forever with crap like "This offer is SO good that I can only offer it to 100 people"....when you know damned well they let anyone and everyone in.

Maybe applying something like that to a membership page - give off the feeling that "half the shelves are already emptied"....not sure at the moment how it can be done...but it'd be very powerful.

The poorest people spend money on food and housing. I think you might be getting confused with The Lipstick Theory?

Either way, can you give me an example of a join page/tour you think does a good job 'adding value' to the join fee?

I have to believe that the poorest people are spending the bulk of their money on food and housing also. I'm thinking the lower-middle class is who spends the money, keeping them in the lower-middle class, but making them feel rich.

Would love to see an example of a page that might be doing this now, btw, if you can find one.

fake scarcity doesn't work
the torrents blow that out of the water
and if access shifting becomes a fair use right you can kiss any hopes of stoping the alternative download when your product is no longer available.
