Unfortunately my extended warranty is up on my 2007 corvette. I have had it since 07 when I bought it brand new. It is paid off. The car is worth 29k now blue book and I only have 32k miles on it. I have gone through 3 tires already and they are $470 a pop and because they are low profile tires they will keep wearing out. No other issues as of yet.

Your opinion is needed on this please. Since i know you guys are all car guys it would help.

My options:

1.) trade the car in for something else. I was looking at 370z or maybe a infiniti or audi BUT it looks like I will have to come out of pocket to buy a new car because all these cars are worth more then what my corvette is. I am just annoyed because no matter what car I get 5 years from now, I will be lucky to get half of what its worth. so if i get a 30k car it will only be worth 15k. No matter what I will eventually have to finance a new car 5 years down the road or keep the one I have.

2.) Buy a car for less and pocket the cash. Not sure if I can get a crappier car though and abandon style.

Any thoughts please? I have until October when my warranty is up. I was told by the dealership NOT to buy another extended warranty for the corvette. Not worth it they said. Ill miss my car argg.

why do you need an extended warrenty to keep the car? It can't be that much trouble when you obviously don't drive it much.

i'd suggest keeping it until you truly decide what you want. hell it's a c6 current body corvette that's never had an issue other than tires, does the warranty cover those tires?

Let's put it this way: I sold my 2004 Dodge Viper, missed the gas and tire costs for about five seconds, and haven't looked back.

No, but I might as well get something good for it trade in wise then just keep it and then a year or 2 down the road something happens where I need to spend 3k for something...

No, warranty does not cover wear and tear only big issues I guess WHICH car companies know that things rarely happen when its under warranty that becomes expensive. Once it is out of warranty is when things happen and by then it costs the buyer.

No offence Dave, but my opinion on extended warranties is that they are for suckers. Much of the cost of extended warranties is commision to the sales person/dealer. If the 'vet has been reliable, why not just keep it? You've taken the big hit on depreciation already, and with low miles, the value of the car will now remain relatively stable.

But, if you want to talk about the 370Z, hit me up, I've got one and absolutely LOVE it.

I've had my Z for 2 years now, 45,000 kms on it - it's been bullet-proof so far. If you get one, definitely get the "sports" package; 19" wheels, bigger brakes, and aero package. It's worth it for the brakes alone.

If you take it to the track (I have once) a larger oil cooler is also recommended, as well as a trailer-full of tires - lol!

That's what the manufacturers, banks and dealers love you to believe. You don't have to have a car in waranty at all times. It's a money pit constantly buying a new car every time the warranty expires. Would you buy a new watch because the warranty expires? no. If the product is a good product then keep it. Period.

Be smart. Sell the money pit and buy a good used one off the lot. Drive it until repairs outweigh a payment on another used one.

There's very little difference between a new and slightly used model aside from the payments.

#1 do NOT buy an extended warranty yourself. they are all crap. the only good ones (i.e. Guardian) you have to buy through a dealership.

Im in the same boat as you, my Tahoe needs new tires on it and I'm getting kinds sick of it... had it for 2 years. Instead of trading it in, I'm going to sell it private party, you will make a LOT more this way.

I would look into a used 370Z, they are nice but quick cars. Of all the cars Ive had, my favorite was my 06 M45... I really miss that car

You have a TIRE problem, NOT a warranty problem.

If you are wearing out right rears only, back off the gas! You're spinning them bald!

If the RR is not the only tire wearing out prematurely, you have wheel alignment or wheel balance issues.

If your tires are "flat spotting", it's wheel balance, if the wear across the tread is uneven or it can sometimes be even but is not consistent with the wear on the 4th tire which is not bad, you have wheel alignment problems which are not worth getting a new car over.

Find a shop which knows 'vettes and have them check it out.

Misalignment problems can wear out tires in only a few hundred miles if severe enough.

Don't know what its costs to get a 'vette aligned these says but I do know the cost would be one fuck of a lot less than buying a new car, especially buying a new car over tire issues!

If you're going to sell it and get an older cheaper car, get a C5 Corvette. You can find one that's very, very modified for under 20k. Or an 03/04 Cobra.

I would personally keep the Vette though. You don't drive it enough to really have major issues, and even then if you don't mod/beat the shit out of it, it will last 150k miles before having really major issues.

15,000 miles on a set of performance tires for a vette is normal. The sales tax alone on a new car will pay for a set or two for your current ride.

just traded my 04 vette off last oct.... put 130k miles on it... no real issues, GREAT gas mileage. if you do get one of the other car you mentioned you will be very bummed by the total lack of performance...I would say drive the vette for another 4-5 years because the value will stay around 15k easy

I say bullshit, other than brakes, tune up and tires I only one issue with the vette: can and crank sensors, about 1600 usd. and that was at 100k miles. and or course you are going to burn through rubber. get the michellin runflats, much cheaper and STOP burning the fucking tires and slaming on the brakes

Honestly here is the deal. I bought it in 2007 new. only have 32k miles on it. I have gone through 3 tires already and I barely drive it. My Average speed is like under 35 mph according to the vette. NO WAY have i been peeling out or speeding for the car to go through tires like that. I talked to chevy and they said low pro tires need to be replaced often and nothing you can do. Comes with having a vette.

Then i was told its better to always have a car with a warranty. So I figured why not trade it in when I can actually get something nice. If I wait another 5 yearsl ike you said and its worth 15k then I still have to finance something else instead of have a car paid off. I dunno

I always buy a couple year old car after the biggest depreciation is already done. A 2008 or 2009 already took the biggest hit, will still be reliable, and you will spend far FAR less on any eventual repairs then the difference in price between the two.

I felt the same as you do in the past. Then I bought a Dodge Magnum, they suggested I get the extended. Afet thinking about it for a bit.. I decided to get it. They offered "Free oil changes avery 5k kms. I thought well at least I get something for the money.

After about2-3 winters the heating system acted up, took em a while to find out the problem, there and then, I got majority of my money back. At this point I'm in the positive for the investment

I got the extended warranty on my 2004 Viper when the factory warranty ran out. Saved me about $10,000, and ended up costing $4,300 for the warranty itself. When I sold the Viper, I cashed out $2,200 from the warranty -- so, for $2,100 over the life of the car, it saved me $10,000 or so. Not too shabby ... but I wouldn't get it on anything that cost less than $70k or so -- those kinds of cars are more disposable when something goes wrong.

If the warranty is transferable, and you are SURE you want to sell it, fuck it, sell it now. A warranty is a huge selling point. I don't believe in buying warranties through a dealer. Dealers are snake oil salesmen who mark everything up all to hell and far beyond. Warranty Direct USE TO sell great warranties... I know they don't offer them any more but key things to look for

1. They covered wear and tear

2. They listed everything NOT covered instead of everything that is covered (very important)

3. They had no overheating clause

4. They covered electrical, airbags and even brakes

5. They offered a $0 deductible policy

6. They allowed YOU to pick the shop

7. They paid UPFRONT instead of reimbursing you

I'd be surprised if you could find many of these features, today, but if you can it's worth paying for. My grandmother went and pissed away nearly $40K on a van and when I found out I told her to buy a warranty from WD... Cost her $1400.. they ended up doing a transmission ($4000) electrical work ($2000+) a head gasket ($2000) and some other shit

I've never seen a good warranty offered by a dealer.

Don't trade with a dealer - you will NOT come out ahead.

What I'd do, I can tell by the way you write about it, you love this car... you put back a hundred or two bucks a month and you'll be very likely to have enough put aside for anything and everything it may need. In the interim maintain the fuck out of it and it would be very likely to provide years of good service to you.

Whoever keeps throwing tires on there for you needs to figure out what's wrong.. I know low pros are touchy, but god damn. Is it the SAME TIRE EVERY TIME? If it is, go smack whoever keeps replacing the tire and not fixing the actual problem

Number one rule for me next time is don't ever sell a car you love.. who knows what might happen... Selling my Cadillacs was the worst thing I have ever done. Every time I see one drive my my heart drops down into my balls

I've owned three Corvettes. Two of them had bad alignments from the factory and wore out the rear tires in about 4k miles. Chevrolet realigned the car and replaced my tires for me both times, no way a new car should come with a bad alignment especially in the rear.

Soft, performance tires and bad alignment will wear them out quickly, especially the run flat tires and those fuckers arent cheap.

Go spend $100 at Discount Tire or whatever in your area on a 4-wheel alignment, I bet its really screwed up.

I can't over-emphasize this. A corvette is something that people often buy when they can just barely afford it, and the repairs kill them. A warranty lets this type of buyer sleep at night, and it expands your market by a huge factor. Great advice here.

You lost about 750/month on the value and now it should start to flatline so lets say you lose 250/month here on out for a bit. That leaves you 500/month for maintenance. Enjoy your car. I have a 2004 M3 and I use I do not drive it a ton so why would I sell a low mileage car just to start over on the depreciation?

I am just annoyed because no matter what car I get 5 years from now, I will be lucky to get half of what its worth. so if i get a 30k car it will only be worth 15k. No matter what I will eventually have to finance a new car 5 years down the road or keep the one I have. 2.) Buy a car for less and pocket the cash. Not sure if I can get a crappier car though and abandon style. Any thoughts please? I have until October when my warranty is up. I was told by the dealership NOT to buy another extended warranty for the corvette. Not worth it they said. Im in the same boat as you, my Tahoe needs new tires on it and I'm getting kinds sick of it... had it for 2 years. Instead of trading it in, I'm going to sell it private party, you will make a LOT more this way. I would look into a used 370Z, they are nice but quick cars. You can find one that's very, very modified for under 20k. Or an 03/04 Cobra. I would personally keep the Vette though. Saved me about $10,000, and ended up costing $4,300 for the warranty itself. When I sold the Viper, I cashed out $2,200 from the warranty -- so, for $2,100 over the life of the car, it saved me $10,000 or so. Not too shabby ... but I wouldn't get it on anything that cost less than $70k or so -- those kinds of cars are more disposable when something goes wrong.

A warranty is a huge selling point. I don't believe in buying warranties through a dealer. Dealers are snake oil salesmen who mark everything up all to hell and far beyond. Warranty Direct USE TO sell great warranties... I know they don't offer them any more but key things to look for 1. They covered wear and tear 2. They listed everything NOT covered instead of everything that is covered (very important) 3. They had no overheating clause 4. They covered electrical, airbags and even brakes 5. They offered a $0 deductible policy 6. They allowed YOU to pick the shop 7. They paid UPFRONT instead of reimbursing you I'd be surprised if you could find many of these features, today, but if you can it's worth paying for. My grandmother went and pissed away nearly $40K on a van and when I found out I told her to buy a warranty from WD... Cost her $1400.. they ended up doing a transmission ($4000) electrical work ($2000+) a head gasket ($2000) and some other shit I've never seen a good warranty offered by a dealer. Don't trade with a dealer - you will NOT come out ahead. What I'd do, I can tell by the way you write about it, you love this car... you put back a hundred or two bucks a month and you'll be very likely to have enough put aside for anything and everything it may need. In the interim maintain the fuck out of it and it would be very likely to provide years of good service to you. Whoever keeps throwing tires on there for you needs to figure out what's wrong.. I know low pros are touchy, but god damn. Is it the SAME TIRE EVERY TIME? If it is, go smack whoever keeps replacing the tire and not fixing the actual problem Number one rule for me next time is don't ever sell a car you love.. who knows what might happen... Two of them had bad alignments from the factory and wore out the rear tires in about 4k miles. Chevrolet realigned the car and replaced my tires for me both times, no way a new car should come with a bad alignment especially in the rear. Soft, performance tires and bad alignment will wear them out quickly, especially the run flat tires and those fuckers arent cheap. Go spend $100 at Discount Tire or whatever in your area on a 4-wheel alignment, I bet its really screwed up. __________________

That leaves you 500/month for maintenance. Enjoy your car. I have a 2004 M3 and I use I do not drive it a ton so why would I sell a low mileage car just to start over on the depreciation?
