Windows 7?
Allright guys, I'm officially on Windows 7. I upgraded from Vista to 7 64bit to be able to go above 4gb on the RAM. What's the big deal about Windows 7? I don't see much of a difference between this and Vista....

The main difference is it actually runs better and much more stable. Windows 7 is what Vista should have been.

I knew Windows was about a decade behind on security, just starting to experiment with mandatory access control, but I didn't realize they were that far behind on hardware support. Do you guys still have to bring the whole system down just to update a desktop app? I remember in Win95 I had to reboot about three times just to update IE. |

there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows you need 64bit to run over 3.25 gigs of ram.
yes windows still sometimes need a reboot usually once every 1-2 months for updates. Quote:

Only thing that has ever asked for a reboot was a large update or antivirus software installation. A lot of win7's core is buil from unix. It's not that they couldn't make windows as secure, they just couldn't make access control easy for the end user to do anything with in a gui environment. Even linux distros still have shortcommings that way. Lets fae it though, windows users are mostly scared to death or anything that isn't wrapped in a gui. As am I. I can't stand having to do anything outside a UI. |

Funny thing. Right after posting that I got a call to go fix a Windows box. BHOs preventing printing and crashing IE. Our Windows guy couldn't be there. I updated IE and guess what - it forced a reboot. I guess things haven't changed that much since Win95.

Actually having Windows 7 raised huge doubts about iOS being so exceptional.

Personally, I use a derivative of LMDE. Debian squeeze base install on encrypted lvm with Linux Mint gnome theme... lovely stuff right there. Though, I used to run Mac OS X on this box but no matter what edits I made to my dsdt, it ran hotter than it should have been... |

I`ve been using windows 7 for about 2-3 months now and I don`t get it either. Startup/shut down is maybe a little bit faster, but thats about it really.

Windows 7 is superior compared to Vista. Not that bulky, simplified to a comfortable extent and does not eat up that much resource.

Apple OS sucks, Windows is a pain, Linux is too much. I wrote my own operating system and drivers using machine language. 001000101010101000010101001001101001

So far it's been solid. It seems like they have brought the stability of their server lines to the desktop. I'm able to run the same amount of applications and my system isn't fazed like it used to. Today I was able to open 200+ documents and they loaded instantaneously. I also have better access to my documents and my tool bar is well organized. I haven't even put the 8 gigs in.

You know I've had very few driver issues in fifteen years of Linux.
Last year I bought a laptop at Wal-Mart. Before putting a real OS on it, I booted it up just to test it, with the preinstalled Windows. Everything worked fine except the wireless card. I did some digging and Windows says there is no driver installed for the card. That's odd. I go to Acer's web site and see drivers for the video card, for sound, everything but the wireless card. I Google the chipset. No Windows driver anywhere. Fuck it. I pop in a Linux install disk and when it's done installing Linux it's online. No Windows driver to be found, but Linux includes the right driver on the OS disk. I found it to be similar with SATA and SAS target drivers. They don't seem to be available for Windows at all. Are you still waiting for 64 bit Flash? We had it in 2008. http://ostatic.com/blog/64-bit-flash-plugin-released-for-linux-first |

As far as being on 64 bit goes, if you do anything serious, you're going to really notice the RAM bump you can get. I have 24GB and After Effects has never worked better.

I skipped Vista, but Windows 7 rocks. In XP, it was a nightmare to network even two PCs, in Windows 7, I just plug in the cables and that's that

7 is definitely better than XP and Vista.
Linux is alright if you can be bothered to learn how to use it or even want to. I prefer Windows for most daily use.
