Looks good. I still rock 2011 MacBook Pro (13 inch) and a iMac (21.5 inch)

iMac has 32GB RAM upgrade, MacBook Pro only has 4, but will be maxed out at 16GB soon.

I think the intel hd graphics 4000 would not be able to work on a 17'' screen at ''retina'' resolution. The 15'' 2 880 x 1 800 screen is probably already killing that poor thing.

I don't play games so don't really need a super video card. Don't even need that high of a resolution being as I like things at a lower resolution and easier to read.

Love that the useless DVD drive has been removed and they are really fast machines.

Should have waited for the new Intel Haswell processor.

It's coming out in a month or two.

There are actually quite a few that are compatible with OSX. I'm still yet to have an issue with the latest Hackintosh that I built. It runs like a champ and the $1500 I have into it now would easily be double with Apple for old hardware.

You know the deal, you've run one. The process is so dead simple now, you install a retail OSX and run a config program after the fact. Anyone could do it, so long as they pick parts that have been tested for compatibility. There's plenty of information out there.

I can see the point in doing that for a desktop, but I have yet to see a regular laptop with the build quality of a Macbook Pro.

That'd be nice if you were budget-conscious, like some of my family is. I run a real Macbook, because I don't have time for even the chance of bullshit, and an extra $2,500 every couple of years is just the cost of doing business .. but if the cheaper laptops have any reasonable build quality (most of them feel ... less well put together to me), this would be a great option for some family members. I'll have to look into it.

My thought was that Rochard was talking about a Windows laptop, which is equivalent to saying that he bought a cheap TV, but it only works with his VCR .. what's the point?

Yes, if there's one advantage we all know OSX has over Windows, it's that more shit runs on it. Good point.

It's got nothing to do with being budget conscious. It's more to do with getting the most for your money. I felt like less of a sucker not having to turn my credit card over to Apple this time around, and there was a point when Quiet and myself were the only Mac users on this board with our Bondi Blue iMacs

The Macbooks are definitely a much better build quality than MOST, but not all laptops out there. But that still doesn't justify them being 2-3 times the cost of your typical laptop. They are no more or less reliable than anything else on the market. If they were, there wouldn't be a 1 hour wait in the Apple Store on a daily basis.

And all Macbooks suck ass for video editing, as do 99% of the PC laptops.

Unfortunately, I haven't found really good Windows equivalents for the app development tools I use on the Mac for iOS development. Maybe you can point me to some, though, because I haven't been looking since 2009.

I know you're making a straw-man argument, but most people here aren't very bright, so I'll spell it out for them: if you're shopping based on price, you obviously won't get a "real" mac, you'll get a Hackintosh. Candyflip swears by them, and I have no specific reason to doubt what he's said. The original comment was that Mac users somehow "overpay" for their Macs, but I'd personally rather have the genuine article versus a knock-off, because my time is valuable, and downtime isn't really an option for me or my clients.

If you're just Windows user, then any old laptop will probably suit you, but then why would you have been in the market for a Mac in the first place? Kind of a silly argument.

That all makes sense to me. I use a Macbook Pro for a laptop, and a Mac Pro for a desktop. I see them as different beasts for different jobs. I wouldn't try to do things on my laptop that are better suited to the desktop.

As far as getting the most for my money, I'm as happy to save some dollars as the next guy, but I also don't feel like my primary tool for making money has to even have a second thought about whether I'm going to splurge on it or not.

And this would make ABSOLUTE sense if the Hackintosh process hadn't become so dead simple.

I've struggled in the past to get them running and then to work properly. This go round as been completely issue free, minus some operator error stuff like using the wrong DVI cables with my 30'' monitors. Can't really blame that on the machine.

This machine is a necessity, but the camera and lenses that shoot the footage it edits and renders, is where I splurge.

I'm a OSX user for life, but Apple's not going to be getting as much money out of me anymore. I don't think I've booted up my Macbook, at least I'll be able to get good resale value out of it

Who the fuck cares what someone else uses? Don't want to buy a Mac? Don't. Don't want to buy a Windows machine? Don't. But for the love of god, shut the fuck up about who is better than who, because nobody fucking cares. Now go suck a bag of fuck.

I don't think anyone is arguing about one being better than the other. Am I missing that here?

Actually...the one Apple computer I would have no problem buying again in the future is the iMac. The three we have here at the house now are still kicking 4 years later.

They're amazing machines at a somewhat reasonable price.

Actually...the one Apple computer I would have no problem buying again in the future is the iMac. The three we have here at the house now are still kicking 4 years later.

They're amazing machines at a somewhat reasonable price.
Actually wasn't directed at you or edgeprod, but everyone else who has to jump in and hate on someone else's choice of computer because they don't want that choice.

The ones who claim that one is better than the other are usually the ones who are most clueless.

They all do the same thing and are all built using most of the same parts.

I'm trying to decide if I should get a new Macbook Pro now, or wait for the new Intel processors to come out. Sounds like there will be a huge battery improvements with the new ones.

"Macs" are just PC hardware these days; therefore you do "overpay". I thought all Mac users knew and accepted that fact.

If you're just Windows user, then any old laptop will probably suit you, but then why would you have been in the market for a Mac in the first place? Kind of a silly argument.
You seem to believe everyone who buys a Mac does so for the same reason you do, that they have no choice. Strange.

There's more to a Mac than just overpriced "PC hardware".

I don't know why I feel the need to constantly educate people. I'm going to take a vacation from that and eat some dinner.

Their support is pretty good, on a consistent basis. I will give them that. But that's just how it should be done and it doesn't need 300% retail markup in some cases to do it. I have owned them for years and will again in the future, but as someone who rarely needs their support and hasn't run into many hardware issues...I'd rather save a little bit. I'm a camera gear whore now. Much like it's a matter of principal for Edgeprod to make sure he's not having issues, it's a matter of principal that I choose not to pay the Apple Tax on everything.

This is why Apple has never cared about being the #1 PC hardware seller. They will happily sell 1/3 less because they make up for it buy selling the same stuff as everyone else in a pretty box for 3 times as much.

It saddens me that you claim to have owned and enjoyed Macs for years and will again, but still think the only thing different about a Mac is the price.

I couldn't live without Nvidia Cuda but if you dont play game and dont do photos editing and videos editing then it true dans the intel 4000 will do the trick.
