In most places, it is illegal to carry a gun in schools. Colorado for instance, you're not allowed to do that there. Can't carry them in movie theaters either. Clearly passing such laws has helped eliminate shootings in CO schools and theaters....Right?

Mark, lets pretend for a moment that you attend a high school basketball game. At some point in the game, some dudes bust through the door and open fire. One of them approaches your area, grabs you or your wife/friend/kid, and sticks a gun to their head....

Would you rather:

1: Offer him a swig of your Molson Ice

2: Explain to him that you don't believe in guns

3: Throw your beer at him

4: Pull out your own gun and have a fighting chance to defend yourself and your loved ones?
What about the fact that allowing guns increases chances that "YOU" is the person who busts into basketball game and points a gun at someone?

So basically you choose between:

a) decent chance that someone busts into basketball game, but you have a gun to try and protect (no guaranteed protection, just better chances).
b) absolute minimum chance that someone busts into basketball game.

Take that into consideration.

Paragraph #2
http://www.cdnshootingsports.org/tenmyths.html

"The best available Canadian research indicates that firearms used in self-defence by law-abiding Canadians exceeds the total number of gun-related deaths by a ratio of forty to one, saving more lives each year than are lost through the misuse of guns. In Canada, a civilian uses a firearm in defence of self, family or property (excluding police, military and security guard duties) an average of once every nine minutes, and half of these incidents involve defence against human threats. Firearms are used over twice as often in self-defence as they are in criminal violence, and save at least 3,300 lives every year. The self-defence use of firearms saves the Canadian economy hundreds of millions of dollars annually by protecting property against theft and vandalism, and reduces medical costs by preventing injury from criminal assault and wild animal attacks."

Why would I take a fairy tale into consideration? I live in the real world. Specifically in the United States. Guns are here, they are going nowhere. You can continue to complain about our policies or perhaps you're smarter than that and can provide a realistic solution?

Why is that fairy tale?
If guns were illegal less people would have guns thus less chances of needing protection.
I do not say that you won't need it completely, I am just saying "less chances". That is common sense fact.
Do not assume that I said that guns would vanish

people can get rifles/shotguns fairly easily. that should be enough to protect ones self. the idea that you need a semi auto for protection seems like overkill and just a justification for being able to have these 'toys'.

and smuggling guns overseas is much more difficult than just driving across a border that has spots where there isn't even a border crossing..just a sign telling people to report to the nearest border crossing.

growing up in small town ontario i've known people to own the odd shotgun or 22 but thats about it. i shot a 22 once..but i've never in my life felt the need to own a gun for protection or anything else. i live in a fairly big city now and have for the past 10 years and still have never felt the need to own a gun for any reason. most the gun crimes i read about here in ottawa are committed in the south end where a large portion of people are immigrants and poor. not to sound racist but if we stopped letting people from other countries immigrate here it seems a lot of gun voilence would disappear. its always crazy foreign names i read committing not only gun crimes but sexual assault/domestic violence, etc.

Good point, but not the point of my quote though. You said "lets be afraid of sane people", I said that majority of the killers were actually SANE people. So yes, you should be afraid of sane people having guns...

true but like i said in other post, smuggling overseas is a whole other game and much more difficult. either way i don't expect america to change its laws for this reason. people will continue to be killed by guns from america, americans will continue to be killed by guns in record numbers, heart disease and cancer will reign and every day dozens of people will die needlessly in car wrecks. i can only see technology having any effective change on any of this.

Being scared and not trusting are two completely different things.

Do you see them as the same? That's a little sad.

We are scared of things that we don't know or don't understand. I believe our government is capable of a great many stupid, horrible things, as non-Americans point out on GFY on a daily basis. My belief in having the right to be prepared for those stupid, horrible things, makes me the opposite of scared.

Again, another good fairy tale is the one you believe about actually being able to stop the government from doing what it wants to do because you own a gun. I get it, it's a masculine ego fantasy thing, but you guys are just kidding yourselves there.

Not for nothin, but I don't think my lil hand guns gonna save me from the gubment and all that wild shit. I just like to have my shit, and enjoy the freedom to have my shit. I love bustin my joints at the range, and if one of these lil bastards out here tried to do me or mine greazy, I'd bust his ass wide open or die tryin.

You can get a concealed carry with 2hrs of education here that costs $30 (with groupon) and then just have to pass a background check.

Just cause granny has a clean record doesn't mean she can see who she is shooting. So yes, I'm sticking to what I said before

For the record....And I think I've stated something similar here before....

I'm not suggesting that more guns or even less gun laws is a good idea. What I'm saying is that this country (The U.S.) is built on firearms. If the guns were not here and we had similar policies as other countries then I'd be fine with that. As is, that is not the case.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, I'm saying this is the United State of America.

And I am sure the Canadians will list a bunch of [what they consider] good Canadian beer; it just isn't available anywhere other than their brewpub/tasting room.

I can provide data about the number of non CCW holders vs. CCW holders who have been involved in criminal gun related activities. Please share your data on the number of accidental shootings by blind grannys.

What a stupid fucking thing to be afraid of.

The ignorance is strong with this one.

Your sarcasm should note that both are regulated already...And by the same branch of Government. atf.gov

Would you believe that underage kids still find a way to smoke? Yes, more regulations is what we need.

However, the media that we get here seems to suggest that most Americans are afraid of the authorities - The local police are the same the world over, there are assholes and you deal with them - Then you have the FBI, you guys start twitching a bit - Then you have the next level - The DHS, the CIA etc and you definitely start smelling fear...

Maybe I should stop watching so much American TV.....

Almost as hilarious as your deflection of my questions.

You have zero data to back up your claims so lets search google for gun accidents. A fun exercise that has nothing to do with the ration of legal gun owns/carrier and crime.

Clearly there is nobody here who can offer a logical debate along with any facts.

Once again....Off to jerk off on my guns.

Lol! Good point. Will do. ;)

Because I love Americans?

But seriously, it just seems to me (Our news covers lots of US events) that the gun laws are too relaxed, and that people are afraid of losing their guns, and that the Stand your Ground Law is insane... it's just a point of view from someone outside, looking in.

Bahahahahahahaha that is great...

But seriously everyone... no need to get bent out of shape over this.

Let me ask a question: Sure, everyone is allowed to own a gun, and sure, everyone here on GFY will use it to target practice or in self defence only. Everyone on GFY passes a background check, etc etc. Everyone is a law abiding citizen and you deserve to own a gun if you want one. CHECK.

So now then, why not pass a law, to keep guns out of the hands of criminals? Of crazy people? Why not make it illegal to carry a gun into a school? Or a bar? Do you not think that this is going too far?
The 2nd Amendment:
A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

What part of this is unclear to you? (Any laws whatsoever restricting gun ownership are illegal and unconstitutional. "We The People" means quite a bit to us.... )

The second Amendment was deemed so important by our founding fathers that they put it second. Not fourth or tenth..... there's a reason. It's there to protect the first Amendment and all the others from GOVERNMENT OPPRESSION AND TYRANNY!!!

yawn. go read about vietnam a little. We didnt win with tanks and all the other toys. It's called guerrilla warfare and its VERY effective, for more proof look at afghanistan right now with the latest military toys available being used against them. We're still there with no end in sight.

When you start talking to real pro-gun folks about why their right to own assault rifles & whatnot is so important, 99% of the time it comes out that they have this juvenile fantasy of being the last bastion of Freedom & Liberty for this hazy future time when the big bad gubmint truly decides to take over. They really feel it's a plausible scenario that they and other gun owners will band together into like an effective resistance force to protect fellow citizens from the Feds or the US Army or the One World Government i.e. UN.

It's just a fairyland left over from playing cowboys & indians at age 8, what cracks me up is that these grown men take it dead serious and have no idea how childish they sound.
Governments always become monsterous tyrants the bigger they get, the worse they get. Look at history there is your answer. You think because we have computers and hidefinition TV we are now magically civilized than we were in 1939.

A few men with guns is bullshit as you say, everybody with guns makes resistance possible. 2nd Anendment ain't about duck hunting or personal security, it's about not being enslaved.

Oh.... but you do have faith in your government. They have the guns and you do not.

We in the US have the right to not have faith in our government, And the right to force the government to govern for the people, by the people.

Your government can do as they wish to you at any time and there's jack shit you can do about it.

Keep in mind, the OP is a socialist from a heavily socialist country.
The infiltration of socialistic authoritarians are driving our constitution out the door and reducing our Republic down to slavery
They think you do not have the right to self defense or protection from a tyrannical government, they believe the government is your authority and should take care of you from cradle to grave

Take all their points as moot

Our society is full of losers, wack-jobs and criminals. Should one pick me or my house as a target I'll take care of myself. Some may naively believe they are never going to be a crime stat. They may even be foolish enough to believe the police will rescue them. Good luck in your choices.

Your country is only free from NAZI boots on your neck because of the US. It's part of the historical records of Japan and Germany that they were afraid of the losses they would incurr if they invaded US soil. You can thank the 2nd amendment fo that too!

We don't need an amendment to carry arms during war time - On the subject of war - We have covered your asses on more than one occasion as well...
