My cholesterol levels are "sky high"

Time to change my diet methinks

I had blood tests taken a week ago and the doctor who called me back today with the results used the term "sky high" when describing my cholesterol levels. So i guess that should be reason enough to make some changes.

My diet has always been terrible, but i never seen to put on any weight. I think i have been the same weight since my early 20's. It's because of that, i always just eat what i like. I don't smoke.

Now to work out a new food plan...

So what is/was your regular diet?
And into what kind of diet you will change it?

I got the same message two years ago from my doctor, but told him I wanted to try to change my lifestyle and diet before I went on meds. Once you go on meds, it is difficult to come off without your body going out of wack... plus I don't want to put synthetic chemicals into my body.

My thing was my lifestyle, lack of regular sleep and eating like shit. I cut back on drinking alcohol, stopped consuming so much diet coke and tried to cut out processed foods. Believe it or not, a lot of the foods you get at chains, even places like the Olive Garden are crammed full of shit that is bad for you, and I was ALWAYS eating out.

I moved towards eating more vegetables, drinking plenty of water, laid off so much beef and within six months my levels dropped significantly. Stress could have also played a factor, which mixed with poor sleeping habits, didn't help.

yeah i'd be curious to know your typically weekly diet. i've haven't gotten my levels tested in ages..if ever but i like to think i eat pretty good. i have vastly changed how i eat since my early 20's. i ate like total shit then.

What part was sky high? Was it triglycerides?

Usually they use extreme language for these things because it's the only way to convince people to change their lifestyles.

good god.. who told you that? Thats true if your 16 maybe... you can be skinny run every day and drop dead of a heart attack just the same as a 350lbs man if you do that when you are older than 25..

Lower your sugar intake as much as you can, start taking some fish oil pills regularly (especially if you don't eat fish already) and eat a lot more nuts and seeds. All 3 things should have a significant impact on lowering cholesterol as a whole--of course avoiding processed foods helps a lot too. To be honest my cholesterol can get up there a bit as well while doing these low carb diets but only when my bf% is too high and only temporary. I'd be more concerned if my triglycerides were high, those are the warning markers for inflammation and heart attacks, far more than cholesterol levels--most doctors aren't up to date with the research on that though.

Look into Mediterranean diet. It's not really a diet just good foods to focus on to help lower your cholesterol

In the middle of May they gave me these numbers.

Cholesterol 141
Triglycerides 147
HDL 23
LDL 89

She was impressed with my diet as far as abstaining from fast foods and sodas. Cooking with coconut oil, eating lots of fresh vegetables, eating only the breads that I bake myself and shit like that. The 23 is too low, it should be above 40 I think it is for me. That's the only bad number there I think and it's not too bad?

Good luck to you.

edit: I'm 49 btw

High cholesterol is a risk factor for other illnesses and by itself does not cause symptoms. Routine screening blood tests may reveal elevate cholesterol levels in the blood.

A lot of the science about cholesterol levels and health( the science many doctors still use) is based on 100 year old information. There's some new stuff that says your level may be as linked to your diet as once thought. Look into it.

By the way, I have borderline high cholesterol and spent months trying to get it down with diet. Not only did it not go down, but it went up slightly.

I'm not saying you should listen to some guy on GFY and ignore your doctor...just look into it for yourself also. There's a ton of info out there.

I'd fire any doctor that describes a cholesterol reading as sky high. It's not a movie he's talking about, it's health, adult language required.

My remedy? Here you go...

Eat whatever you want for breakfast and dinner, but take "lunch" out of your vocabulary. Instead what you do is snack constantly or every few hours at least on fruits, raw vegetables, a handful of nuts, cheese and whole grain crackers, yogurt, stuff like that. A handful here, and nibble there, it's called GRAZING. It will train your metabolism out of "famine" mode (storing fat) and into "feast" mode (burning fat).

Do that faithfully every day and six months from now you'll be 10-20 lbs lighter, and you won't have burned muscle to do it, you'll have lost fat. Your cholesterol will be back in the zone as well.

Taking Omega 3 supplements daily will help immensely. That, and less sugar/alcohol and you should be good to go. Whatever you do, don't go on statins. There is all kinds of research about how bad they are for you.

He is 6 feet tall and weighs about 160lbs, he does not need to lose 20lbs lol. He needs to stop eating the shit he does, I have no idea how the hell he stays slim with his diet, it's incredible.

Lipitor (atorvastatin it's generic now)

No fatty meats or organ meats -- cut your total meat intake in half -- pork tenderloin, skinless chicken, or turkey breast is lower in fat and cholesterol.
No eggs -- try egg beaters -- they are not that bad.
Turkey bacon -- no pork bacon.
High fibre foods like beans and legumes will help correct the ratio of HDL and LDL Cholesterol to normal levels.
Eat more fresh fruit and eat walnuts and almonds sparingly.
Fish is a good source of Omega-3 fish oils. The most current research leads one to believe that fish oil supplements are not all that effective -- they won't hurt you and they do have a mild anti blood clotting effect, they ask you to stop taking them 5 days before any surgery for that reason. Fish is a relatively low fat food but Salmon is higher fat. Eat fish 3 times a week for dinner.
Stay away from shrimp, crab and other shellfish -- they are loaded with cholesterol.
Read the food nutritional labels-- they require them there? Buy the better grade lower fat lower cholesterol foods -- they may cost more but if you drop dead of a heart attack you make -0- you're dead. I just got back from the grocery store and couple of hours ago and that's what I was doing: spending 25% more on buying healthy food.

If your high number is over 210 -- total lipid count you should be on meds. You need to be on a statin medicine -- don't listen to the GFY witch doctors -- there is no natural cure, eating low fat will only help.

I have developed arteriosclerosis, that runs in the family, my father died of a complications of it at 43 -- massive coronary heart attack.

I ate a high protein and fat diet, ate eggs and bacon, etc.. After 3 surgeries to remove or compress arterial clots after 3 minor strokes, I know all to well this is not something to fuck with. See a cardiologist, stop smoking, do a complete blood work up at your primary care doctor. I developed PAD, I smoked for 35 years, nicotine hardens your arteries and narrows them aiding in blood clot formation -- smokeless cigarettes are nicotine injection systems -- the result is the same, in my legs and they could only help to some degree with Cryoplasty (liquid nitrogen angioplasty (like angioplasty but not in the heart)).

Not that incredible, many people do so. Not majority of course, but plenty

One other thing, make sure your doctor orders a liver function blood test

regulation of cholesterol homeostasis by liver x receptors

I would also ask your doctor about your testosterone levels. The link between cholesterol and testosterone is profound, each requires, helps and builds off the other. Men's cholesterol health is to be evaluated much differently than women's due to this.

Then he can just add in or subtract from my food list what he wants, but following what I said will still benefit a guy like him immensely. He's lucky then if he needs no weight loss, all he needs to do is adjust the way he eats, and just add in some healthier snacking throughout the day.

One thing that can keep a guy like that slim is youth. Plenty of people enjoy years of eating whatever crap they want and never gain weight, that is... until they start approaching their 40's. Then metabolism almost always overtakes them and they either change their ways or they blow up like the hindenburg. A warning though -- having a poor diet like that for so many years can (and almost always does) net you a huge risk for developing other health problems. Heart problems, circulation problems, digestion and gastro-intenstinal problems, etc etc. Yay! Let's all hit the McDeath's drive-thruuuu!!!

Seriously, I don't even look at the chip, cookie and cracker aisle any more at the supermarket. I'm all about the other stuff I mentioned these days. I'm especially stuck on pink grapefruit, I have a few slices of it just about every day.

1) drink plenty of water... 2-3 liters per day
2) eat boiled food instead of fried
3) more chicken, fish and beef instead of pork and similar
4) sea fish and olive oil
5) cut on sugar
6) dont eat after 10pm

tasteless but gives results...
