Quit eating processed food. I have a saying. Only buy from the outside of the supermarket. All the shit in the middle will kill you.

My advice is not to take any advice whatsoever from people on a message board.

I also have high cholesterol. I am 31. I am very active in sports and am fit. I have had high cholesterol even as a kid and was 3x more active atleast then any kid is now a days. Some times its just how a person's liver is from all the tests I went threw. I do have to take RX cause of it and it has helped.
Fiber is a big thing
Fish oils like was mentioned
No White Bread or sugar, starch stuff
lecithin supplement
Eat like a diebetic

Meat, vegetables, rice, fish etc. You can mix recipes, plenty of them so you do not get bored.

I could tell you what I eat, but the cholesterol numbers don't tell the full story. I had a second heart episode just last month! No blockages or issues with plaque build up and no new hardware installed. A study was done to make sure my heart could find it's rhythm on it's own too. I was this close to having an implanted defibrillator but as the doctor said "you dodged a bullet."

You know what raises good cholesterol and lowers bad plus has no detractors? Exercise. It's just about the only thing I don't get enough of too.

I think it's time to get off the chair and do something. How about gardening a few plants you can add to your diet? Spinach grows fast and well anywhere unless it's too hot for example. Or just going for a good 20 minute walk each day.

Last night I had some leftover roasted chicken. I was going to make a simple chicken salad with some fresh vegetables but figured i'd try something a bit more fun. Did a spinach jambalaya. Basically just a stir fry you add sausage and sassafrass (gumbo file) to. seafood too if you got any available.

pulled apart chicken into chunks, pealed the skin. used 2 spicy italian sausages grilled and sliced, green peppers, green onions, tomato past, pimento paste (siracha works instead), sassafrass, cayenne (only if you like it spicy, was good without) then add spinach and crushed garlic in the last few minutes, i use this instead of rice, which doesn't work for my low carb diet.

inexpensive, about 10 bucks worth of ingredients and only took 15 mins to prep and cook--and low on sugars.

for dining out or delivery I generally stick with salads with meats and low sugars, greek salads are perfect for my diet, loaded with antioxidants too. for snacks i stick with nuts and seeds, although celery with some dip is a nice change.

Start eating lean meats, fish, veggies and fruit and your cholesterol will drop like a rock! Cut down on fatty foods and don't eat anything that's fried.

Lipitor is also a wonder drug. Cholesterol can also be hereditary.

After reading this post I bought another book that is a very interesting approach.

Not saying that what this Cardiologist says is gospel but I found collaborating evidence of his assertions that the supplemental use of these energy-supplying nutrients is supplemental to deficiencies that Statins and Beta blockers cause in their natural production.

http://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supp...g/hrb-20059019
http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supple... tName=RIBOSE
http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supple...me=L-CARNITINE

L-carnitine is of particular interest ...

These are supplements and not replacements for accepted prescriptions like Lipitor but some of these supplements lower blood sugar, are thought to lower cholesterol levels, aid in circulation and heart diastolic function, etc. .

I cut it down to ONE sausage -- more veggies(fill ). One Italian sausage is 15% of your daily allowance of cholesterol -- adds up fast.

If your body (liver function) does not regulate dietary cholesterol to optimum levels, some people can regulate dietary cholesterol, you need to cut dietary cholesterol maybe to 70% of the allowed daily levels.

http://www.health.harvard.edu/newswe...holesterol.htm

Your body can produce cholesterol from many low-cholesterol foods, and if your body's cholesterol production is out of wack, that is where Statins like Lipitor (and in lower doses Zocor (simvastatin)) come in.

There is only one problem: Brain chemistry.

Our brains want food to have taste and texture. So, you would have to reprogram your brain to believe that crap tastes like food ... In essence, "soylent" is a flavored chemical soup -- yum, yum ... Bon Appétit!

Maybe in 100,000 years after we exhaust the food resources on the planet.

Meantime they are selling this crap for $100.00 a case HAHA, good luck ...

Aside: I had real food for lunch
BLT made with:
Turkey bacon
(3 slices 75 calories 12% daily cholesterol).
2 slices of 15 Grain Brownberry whole wheat toast
(200 calories 0% daily cholesterol 0 grams Sugars Dietary Fiber 8 grams or 32% of the daily recommendation.
(Fiber that increases you HDL "good" cholesterol levels as compared to LDL -- "bad" cholesterol that clots your arteries, HDL Cholesterol actually reverses the plaque deposits caused by LDL cholesterol.)
And I cheated with 2 tsp of real Mayo,
some lettuce and tomato.

So, 500 +- Calories (more than normal but I will work on the lawn and gardens here later this afternoon -- not sit and work at my desk all day) 14% of the daily cholesterol limit, A BLT that still tastes good in my mouth 15 minutes later instead of consuming some chemical slop ... Fuck evolution -- they sell that soya chemical slop and the customer gives up in 2 weeks after losing 10 pounds, then goes back to eating jelly doughnuts made with lards

  • Use egg substitute "egg beaters" or equivalent, or egg whites only. I have a little turkey bacon a few times a week.
  • Lean cooked ham that is no or low sugar is OK.
  • All meat has saturated fats and cholesterol. But beef has more cholesterol than chicken or lean pork (like pork loin).
  • Avoid dark meat poultry -- Legs, thighs, whole chickens.
  • Forget lobster, shrimp, crab, kidney, liver, or other organ meats.
  • Low fat 2% cheese in moderation -- 1 or 2 ounces in a day
  • Mozzarella skim milk cheese, Low fat or no fat cottage cheese. No fat Greek yoghurt with some chopped fresh fruit added.
  • Stir-fry with 4 - 6 ounces of pork loin or chicken breast -- that's one pork cutlet or one skinless chicken breast!
  • Lot of legumes or beans ... Whole grain products ... Parsnips, carrots, pears -- fibrous fruits and vegetables. Reduced fat or baked woven wheat cracker (trisquit) with home made hummus -- chick peas (AKA: garbanzo beans) are loaded with fiber
  • Sweet potato, raw - baked - no added butter or margarine: 16% of your daily dietary fiber.

His liver functions at regulating cholesterol are out of whack ...
Statins can help but they can affect liver functions negatively sometimes -- at 70 if he has had no health problems he may be the exception to the rule.

Also a lot depends on the ratio and sum of the LDL and HDL Cholesterol. If the Total Cholesterol is real high like
Your Total Cholesterol of 293 is HIGH RISK
Your LDL of 110 is NEAR OPTIMAL
Your HDL of 160 is OPTIMAL
Your Triglyceride level of 115 is NORMAL
RATIOS:
Your Total Cholesterol/HDL ratio is: 1.72 - (preferably under 5.0, ideally under 3.5) IDEAL
Your HDL/LDL ratio is: 1.455 - (preferably over 0.3, ideally over 0.4) IDEAL
Your triglycerides/HDL ratio is: 0.156 - (preferably under 4, ideally under 2)
http://www.hughcalc.org/chol.php
I am assuming that Vegan means no animal products -- fish, eggs or milk.

Get your liver checked first & foremost. A full work up including hep a,b,c,d,e. Then the other tests they run ast and gst I think it's called. After the results discuss a plan of action with your doc. You def need a statin, in addition to laying off any booze, pills etc. Once that is done a complete lifestyle change is needed. Levels like yours need immediate intervention. Don't delay.
Be well & health to you

I'm currently on Roaccutane which is a 4 month course. I'm 2 months into that.

I've to go back in a couple of weeks and they will check if the cholesterol levels are linked to that. (I haven't had any alcohol since i started them).

Either way, my diet etc had to change..

Try lowfat vegan for a month. I dont think anything will lower your cholesterol faster than sweaty heart pumping exercise and a plant based diet. Cholesterol comes from animals and they pump the meat with fat to make it taste better.

What I eat most days:
Green smoothie first thing. Spinach, cucumber, pineapple, apple, lemon & water in a blender. At first you might not like it but after a while youll like it because it makes you want to run a million miles. Tons of green smoothie recipes out there

Homemade Oatmeal for breakfast with some fresh or frozen fruit & stevia, I like frozen blueberries and bananas.
Dont do 1 minute oatmeal as it goes into your blood too fast, get steel cut or regular oatmeal, thats perfect. Make a big batch once a week then store them into containers for the week, set yourself up for success.

Potatoes for lunch, NO OIL & NO cooking spray (sprays are 100% fat despite the labels), not even olive oil that clogs arteries too despite what the marketing says. Just make mashed potatoes with no fat gravy & a side of veggies or cut the potatoes into oven fries & eat with ketchup. Make a BIG BIG plate so they fill you. There's no fat in potatoes but theres decent protein so and you can eat all you want. I never get tired of oven french fries and ketchup.

Then veggies with rice for dinner with a little soy sauce, or giant soup, thats how asians stay slim and healthy. Something filling.
Eat all the fruit you want for snacks. Apples (organic only for apples), Watermelon, Mango, whatever you want. Sweet fruits will kill your cravings for chocolate, ice cream, cookies etc. Put some corn tortillas in the oven and eat with with salsa to replace potato chips.

You need to eat starchy foods like potatoes, rice, corn etc because they will keep you full. If you do only veggies youll be hungry all the time.
This is low fat and will reduce your cholesterol. Dont add oil to anything, you can fry things in water.
Drink lots of water, drown yourself with water.

Use a treadmill and set it on an incline, hills make you lean and make you sweat, youll sweat the cholesterol out.
Since I been eating this way the pounds have fallen off quickly.
Follow this then go back in 2 months and get blood tests again, should be much better numbers.
good luck

ps - about Atkins, Dr Atkins weighed 258 pounds when he died and he had suffered from a heart attack, congestive heart failure, and hypertension. Exactly what you want to avoid.
