News Oklahoma police officer charged with raping women while on duty

OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - An Oklahoma City police officer accused of sexually assaulting 13 women while on duty will face trial for 35 felony counts including rape and sexual assault, court officials said on Wednesday.

If convicted, Daniel Holtzclaw, 27, could face life in prison. Holtzclaw, who is on paid leave, has denied the allegations against him and remains under house arrest at his parents' home in Enid, about 70 miles north of Oklahoma City.

At a pretrial hearing this week, 13 women testified about being forced into sex with the officer, who threatened many of them with jail. The charges include six counts of first-degree rape.



"He was an officer. And I was scared. And I knew he could hurt me," one woman said in court.

Another victim, aged 17, said she was raped by Holtzclaw on the front porch of her mother?s home. She testified Holtzclaw picked her up while she walking home and threatened to arrest her on outstanding warrants.

Holtzclaw, who had been on the force for three years, was arrested in August and charged with assaulting eight women. Other victims have came forward since then. Most of the incidents are suspected of taking place between February and June. [ID:nL1N0R70GF]

I've had a change of opinion on all this police violence. I've long thought it was anecdotal, it seems that now it's systemic. nationwide. However, the problem is easily solved. We need a federal law requiring all police in every state to wear body cameras that are required to be worn the entire time on duty and to actually be on while worn.

Problem is that even with Dash Cameras, they sometimes go missing or malfunction. It needs to be more far reaching than cameras. One suggestion was that Police Officers start paying for their occupational insurance. With each complaint found true, their insurance goes up till it can no longer be sustained. When they can pretty much act anyway they want and not be held accountable for it, they will abuse that power.

What mindset does a cop have when they do shit like this?

I don't see why this would be a problem to implement. I know the mantra has been police are supposed to act at a higher level, but it's time to recognize human beings can't operate at a higher level due to a badge and an oath. combine that with a bunch of these police are iraq/afghanistan war vererans and now cities and municipalities are equipping these guys with the same tools they used in war zones after the military as indoctrinated them to be killers.

This is a great idea. Why should the citizenry be the only people who are monitored and watched 24/7? Let's chip police officers so even when they are off-duty they cannot go back and assault someone (something that happened here in NYC awhile back, two cops went back to woman's apartment off-duty and raped her).

This shit is disgusting and out of control. Women should be terrifid of driving alone so a cop can notice, pull her over and rape her in the back seat of his police car? "What'cha gonna do bitch, call the cops? I AM a cop!"

Either we accept that citizens are there to relieve the sexual and violent urges of the authority as is the case in most 3rd world countries (and any country in times of war or unrest) or else we make some big changes in the way we allow law enforcement to operate.

I disagree. Anyone would be hard-pressed to proof police brutality and power abuse has not only been systemic since the beginning of time, it's been that way every where all the time.

I do think awareness is the problem. For me, I think an accurate way to say it would be that I wasn't aware it was increasing to the level it has gotten to, head in the sand about that certainly.

But when it comes to organizations one person or policy, etc, can change an entire organization so I wouldn't think human nature fully applies to organizations.

but to be clear, brutality and power trips are a side-effect to requiring police, I just think that other times it's been less overall than it is now, I have a hard time seeing that it's just because of the internet and youtube, to me that seems to skirt many (some?) of the issues that contribute to the problem.

It is also action that cycles. With the systematic decline of the middle class in America there has been a decline in sustained protests. In the Sixties the protests were relentless and constant. Now? People take a day or three off from work, protest to 'make a statement' then go right back to the status quo.
