I can probably save a bit of money by having a whore's bath every day in a McDonald's washroom or save some on my electricity costs by running an extension cord from my neighbour's house but in the end there's some things you probably shouldn't skimp on. If it costs me $50 a month to avoid having cops show up at my door then I'll pay it.

At least it is not hard to understand to what US police spends its time to. You know, any bigger police station probably questions from tens to hundreds of suspects, witnesses, etc. per day. Fetching those all by person requires some serious manpower.

Around here police sends letter or calls to come for police station, unless they intent to arrest. And no, you don't get arrested for petty crimes. Not even for harder crimes unless there is risk for you fleeing, etc.

I guess US police just wants to show off its power. "Do crime and we will catch you (with a show)". Even if you haven't actually done anything (but kept as guilty from the beginning).

You do not expect cops to show up at your door for just doing that. It was some other circumstances involved (they were investigating something else), not merely for borrowing internet password, lol.

I'm just a victim of choices that look somewhat suspicious in a specific time.
The story below is probably residual of the break-in to certain servers last year where info was stolen (hence asking me about bitcoin) and the infiltrators then used or sold/gave some of that data others for fraudulent tax returns which hit hard the past couple months and now they ramped investigations up once again.

ISU employees report being victims of tax fraud

If I do go down as a martyr, I sure as hell hope that someone will act as a GFY ambassador for me like I did for Donny. LOL.

hey donny's gfy pal, local cops don't investigate tax fraud, the IRS does.

so you don't have to worry about martyrdom/ being killed for your belief in creeping the local college(s).

Ya but when you start making Craigslist posts requesting the free password from local college kids that are strangers to you, all parties could be asking for trouble. What would this girl do if he decided to do something illegal or vice versa? For all he knows she could have been a pedophile downloading cp every day and now he's logging in using her personal credentials. It's just a bad idea.

This entire thing stinks. If you had legit local detectives at your door, yoou have more to wory about other than iPhone repairs or tax evasion

They're on to you.

You admit to 30,000 violations of CAN-SPAM in your post. You admitted the same to the cops.

You're talking like you're some Columbo sizing the cops up, while you're actually singing like a canary and admitting to crimes.

Turn off the Law and Order. It's not real.

Funny how she'd be the bad one in your story. Meanwhile, he's the creepy pornographer trying to get anonymous logins for campus WiFi. That's surely on the up and up.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was spamming from her account. He's already admitted to being a spammer in this thread.

Anyone (for the most part) can walk into the registars office and buy that list, they told me email it only once, which I did.
CAN-SPAM aside I was emailed an excel document that said I was a-ok to blast away.
This whole scenario is just so unusual and the tools will speculate to high heaven about certain aspects of it, no harm no foul was done.

Anyway I'll leave it at that, entertainment and a great story to tell... might even get me laid a couple times!

Happy 4th everyone.

I'm pretty sure it is the user who has to opt in. Otherwise, Google and Yahoo would be selling access to users inboxes (ads around email, aside, as it's not the same).

I also wouldn't trust a random University employee to understand the intricacies of the law. Did they include their lawyers opinion memoranda with the excel spreadsheet? Oh, that's right, they don't care if you break the law because they're just acting as a data broker.

How is that related to me? Sly asked and I guessed the reason why people (or OP, which he also confirmed later) would do that.

That was just an example showing how it could work out bad for both parties even if he had the best of intentions and just wanted to share the access for normal reasons. I was responding to mineistaken who suggested he just was doing it to save a few bucks.

I'm not going to start calling the guy out because I have no idea what he actually did. But your spamming story certainly sounds plausible.

I used Email Marketing Services | Email Marketing Solutions | Campaigner

I hardly used the wifi netID account. It's for convenience. I plop down all over town to meet people and I like my wifi, even if it's rarely used.

I got the idea for the list during a repair, this aspiring rapper told me he used the list he bought from them to sell T-shirts to Iowa State students with Iowa State themes on them, I jumped on that ASAP. That rapper dude was BLACK BTW, thought I'd mention that because it's relevant to this thread and the current events.

You could say the same for that guy and I would bet that he infringed on Iowa State Universities trademark of using their brand (which they license for a high price). But such is everything.

Ok, I had this same situation happen to me pretty much.

1. Don't call them or talk to them if they show up again or anything like that. Say you have no comment and would like your lawyer if they try to contact you.

2. Get the best lawyer you can afford, particularly one who specializes in internet crimes.

3. They will come back to arrest you within the next 2-4 weeks. Make sure you have someone who knows about this to be prepared to bail you out of jail. Call bail bonds etc and get it all lined up. Bail for internet crimes is usually very high, not $1,000 but more like $20,000. And typically they will charge you with the same crime like 4 or 5 times to inflate your bail and give more bargaining room to the prosecutor. ie if you went to an unauthorized website and clicked 5 things on it, they would charge you with 5 counts.

Good luck!

When will you people learn the laws of the is country. Get a doorbot or ring for your door, when smeone rings and wants you you simply can speak to them via your phone or computer......you DO NOT HAVE TO SPEAK ONE WORD THEM and probably did damage A LOT by speaking with them. You politely ask them what this concerns, they answer and if it's about you and not your neighbors house being burglarized and they need your help you simply say " do you have a warrant for this (politely)." They will say no because if they had enough evidence to arrest you, you would have been arrested immediately and not even questioned by a detective until you were in intake at the county lockup. When they say no, you say "thanks for stopping by officers and have a nice day" Do NOT open your door or unlatch your chain if you don't have a system setup, because anything they deem suspicious will allow them probably cause to enter your home whether you want them or not. It is AMAZING how many people just get intimidated by police, do you ever watch cops? jail? on tv? one second they are your best friend promising they won't even take you in just a ticket if you tell them where you hid your weed, as soon as they start talking and engaging you in conversation you are done. They grab it, handcuff you and throw you in county. Come on guys. My wife is a criminal defense attorney so this all true and there is a very good youtube tutorial from a very famous criminal defense attorney about this exact subject. You NEVER speak to the police without an attorney present unless to ask them (if you're pulled over) officer am I being detained? They MUST answer and if they have not found a reason to arrest you immediately you must be released. IF they do say yes you are being detained, then you simply say "i invoke my right to remain silent and request my attorney" That's it. There is NO talking your way out of something, sorry that is false.

Those cops did not have the amount of info to link you to whatever it is they are investigating, they were relying on you to fill in the blanks they don't know and get information they did not have.

Lesson learned.

Maybe you will maybe you won't...........but with your lovely attitude I doubt you'll fare well when you do run into a situation you can't and won't understand. You'll run your mouth and end up right where most do. Oh and if you can't understand the words I wrote, I realize I just wasted more time replying LOL.

...and still here!

Because I didn't do anything.
The wheels of justice turn slow but considering it is summer time and almost the entire student body is gone they had more than enough down time to follow up and figure that it wasn't me.

This really did happen.

I mentioned earlier that I didn't shake the black man's hand, I wonder if it would have helped if I told him straight to his face that

"I dindu nuffins!!!!"

If I was ever guilty of anything I would have kept my mouth shut and said nothing, if that's the case all you do is say "Sorry, I will talk to my lawyer, good day."

They went after me because they thought I was capable of all the hacking and other schemes that were done. It's an honor to be thought of so highly for the wrong reasons!
I was about 3/4 done with an electrical engineering degree from Iowa State until I decided to stop going at the end of 2012. Stack that on top of the craigslist post, the email list, it rings a lot of false positives.

Glad you are still here. Local PD doesn't enforce tax crimes. .001% of people use stolen IDs to do very very bad stuff. Every single thing accessed online by anyone in the US is tracked. It is easy to list certain IPs, keywords, sites, access points, login times and geo, and holistically filter them for bad actors. You were, I assume, on the outside of one of the resulting arrays, and easy to find.

[L-Pink Mandated Paragraph] If you have done anything even remotely illegal tied in any way to your internet activity, get an attorney, tell him everything, and get his home and weekend number.

That was way better than the second season of True Detective ...
