I have had it for years. Take Allopurinol daily, Indomethacine for inflammation, steroids for bad out breaks.
Nothing hurts more or is more disabling when it attacks. Toes, one knee, elbows. I've altered my diet, reduced beer consumption 99%. But when it's hereditary you are kind of helpless. |

Late 30's when I first got it. Being tired or stressed seems to trigger it. So does eating/drinking to much, like on a vacation where you pig out with the wrong foods and drink way to much everyday. The trick is to catch an attack early and prevent it getting worse, indomethacine.

I drink a glass of black cherry juice everyday, hard to tell if or how effective it is but figure it can't be bad for you. Most grocery stores carry it in the health food, specialty juice section.

If you notice an attack in the early stages, can you be sure to stop it in its tracks?

A vacation on the beach with shellfish for lunch and dinner with a case of beer throughout the day will affect me every time.

I've been lucky because drinking a few cases of beer and shellfish is part of my diet and haven't had that problem yet

Going back to my nursing days now - Colchicine was the drug of choice - I also remember that a side effect was shitting yourself to death - I hope that things have moved on...

Have had it and it is the most painful thing ever! Cherry extract tablets are good, and if an attack is starting have been prescribed Naproxen to take. You can usually feel an attack starting so dose up when you do!!
I felt one start early this week, and seem to be holding it at bay for now- I hope so as doing a triathlon tomorrow!!

My first gout attack was in my ankle. I woke up with it and thought it was a bad sprain or even fracture - but I didn't remember hurting it. That was 1992. Went to the doctor, told me to elevate, ice, rest - totally misdiagnosed. It happened again six months later, but in my knee - woke up with it. Too painful to walk. I had someone help me go the few blocks to St. Vincent's Hospital in the Village. An intern asked me a lot of questions and said "when in doubt, it's probably gout". He prescribed a combination therapy of Colchicine (5mg) and Indomethacin (50mg). I took two of each and ten minutes later I was high as a kite. I barely made it to bed. I was also drowsy. Another ten minutes later and my knee was almost 100% normal. It was like magic.
I get a bad case every three or four months. I've tried everything - the only thing that really works is the COMBINATION of Colchicine and Indomethacin. I must take both for it to be completely effective. The Indomethacin definitely helps loosen the inflammation, but it's the Colchicine that is the real workhorse. It dissolves the crystals that have formed in the inflamed joints and gets them out through diarrhea. IF YOU DON'T TAKE THE COLCHICINE, THE GOUT WILL DISSAPATE, BUT NOT COMPLETELY AND YOU WILL GET MORE FREQUENT ATTACKS. And don't try to negate the effects by using Pepto-Bismal. You need to shit it out liquidly. That's the best way to prevent another attack from occurring quickly. I learned this the hard way. Quote:

Also, one of my physicians had me do a 24 hour urine collection to determine whether I produced excess Uric Acid or if my body didn't get rid of it enough. I really don't remember which one it is, but based on that he prescribed Allopurinal, but it didn't reduce the flare-ups. Quote:

I find that doing sports ABSOLUTELY makes you more prone to a flare-up. If I twist an ankle, I can almost guarantee that I will get a flare-up there. Same in the knee and the past few years my wrists. I'be been driving a small motorbike the last year and I've gotten a couple of flare-ups in my right wrist - and I'm sure it's from over-throttling (Yeah, I set myself up with that one). As far as Black Cherry and all those other remedies - I've tried them all - NOT A SINGLE ONE WORKED. Only the combo of Colchicine and Indomethacin. I'm also overweight. Twice I've lost about 100 lbs only to put it back on again. MY GOUT FLARE-UPS WERE JUST AS CONSISTENT AS WHEN I WAS 270lbs or 170lbs. In fact, I got gout MORE when I weighed less, because I was playing a lot of basketball and one wrong move guaranteed me a flareup 2-3 days later (that's how you know it's not a sprain. That and the fact that the gout medication clears it up). If there's any questions you have, I'm happy to help. Unfortunately I have a lot of experience with the subject. |

Thanks for sharing your story RandyRandy, lots of useful information, this is having a huge impact on your life clearly.
First place I've got gout is where I used to kick a football regularly, often very hard, do you think that's related i.e. made the area more vulnerable? Couple of questions, is gout something that always gets worse with age? Do the flare-ups leave some damage each time? Quote:

Let me first say I'm not a doctor. That being said, I've done tons of research on gout and can only comment on how it's effected me. I do believe that when you overuse a particular joint, it becomes more susceptible to getting a flare-up. I've seen this in the last decade more in my hands than anywhere else. I mentioned the throttle on the motorbike and I'm in the pizza business and now and then I'll get behind the counter and work some dough and sure enough, several days later I'll get a minor flare-up. And the only way it will go away is by the combination of colchicine and indomethacine, both of which are non-prescription and literally pennies for a pill. When I first started, Colchicine was cheap in the U.S., then something happened and it's now about $10 a pill in NY with no insurance. Indomethacine is maybe $2 a capsule with no insurance in NY. Both are prescription in the States. In Malaysia it's 25 cents US for 10 pills of either drug, over the counter. I don't know if it gets worse with age for me. Even though right now I'm a fat fuck, I've eliminated almost everything that I know sets it off. I very rarely drink alcohol, no nitrates and no crustaceans. That seems to help. I have read that the more gout attacks you have, the more damage is done to the joint and it can cause permanent damage. In Thailand they are starting to do stem cell surgery to eliminate gout, but real info is hard to come by. But the minute I feel the "twinge" and heat (physical heat in the effected joint, I take both pills and that almost always works. I never take more than three doses. Sometimes one or two is enough. I'm 51 and the one change is while the effected joint gets swollen, it doesn't get red like it did in my 30s and 40s. But the pain hurts like hell. Any many times it comes on in the middle of the night. Maybe I bang something as I'm a very restless sleeper. If I feel the onset at 4am, I take my pills and usually by 8am I'm ok. You have to knock it out before it sets in. |

I thought I had it briefly but I think i changed things up in time to avoid anything further. basically just made sure i ate more nuts, seeds and vegetables. Anything that ups the fibre will get the uric acid levels down and less likely to get crystals.

Beer consumption contributes to gout because of its high purine content. Through the process of digestion the purine compound breaks down to form uric acid.

I take Allopurinol every day and it works for me. I've not had a problem in way more than ten years. But I keep Colchicine on hand just in case.
The doctors told me that Colchecine is an ancient medicine that was used by the Indians way before White people stopped by to visit. As rough as it can be on GI tract, it works, too, while all the more modern anti-inflamatories are chancy and dicy from one person to another. And they have longer term adverse potential. The worst part of this gout thing is the strong association with coronary artery disease and heart attacks. The crystals seem to either concentrate there or encourage deposit growth. It is probably/almost for sure something that shortens expected life span. I've known gout suffers who died that way. For what it's worth, they were the guys running around with big bottles of modern anti-inflamatories. Maybe just a coincidence, maybe. |

I have had gout for more than 20 years now. First time was at night, i woke up with such an unbearable pain in my foot i thought i must have broken a bone. I love wheat beers such as Blue Moon and most Belgian beers. Now i have to limit my intake to perhaps one beer a day. I also love lobster grilled with garlic butter, haven't had lobster for almost 10 years now, i miss that the most.
Here is what i have found helps stop flareups, drink a ton of distilled water ( 80cents per gallon at Walmart) Drinking about a gallon a day helps me eat and drink almost anything without issue and if i do feel the onset of an attack the indomethocine helps reduce the pain in about 4 hours. I spent a fortune on Black Cherry juice with little or no effect for me, what will help is a Google search for food high in purines and avoid the foods high on the list like Lobster, Asparagus mushrooms etc. Taking too much indomethocine can damage your kidneys so be careful.

here is a link of what I found today.. I've had it for 5 or so years and I'm having a attack now
![]() Home Remedies for Gout | Top 10 Home Remedies going to try the apple cider vinegar, bananas, black cherries, and lots of water. The water was mentioned in another link I read to help flush it out. I live with small amounts of pain 24/7 but this is my 3rd all out attack where I feel I might not be able to walk by tomorrow.. I should really go see a doctor but I'm not ready to give up alcohol. I use to think I twisted my ankle when I drank too much until I researched it years ago.. I think I might have to give up beer cause I've read over and over that beer is worse than any other alcohol you can drink in relation to it.

I got first attack some 5 years ago, after I've been on work without too much moving and with too much meat and alcohol for couple of years. doctor gave me alopurinol and after few months I never took it again from foods I cut out several foods: beef, liver (pates especially) and dried sausages. experts claims that you should also cut some blue fish - sardinas, anchoves, mackarels. meat soups. from vegetables - beans and similar stuff. white bread. even tomato should be avoided (when you see the list, there is 3-4 allowed foods... ) I didn't cut above foods completely, but eat them rare (except fish and tomato), maximum once per month. liver and similar stuff I cut completely beer - I live in Czech Republic, beer and meat is on every step and impossible to avoid. red wine is my favorite wine and I can say that I didn't cut the drink too much and I eat nice amount of pork and often seafood. also I don't avoid rum and vodka... once per month, or two. or 3, I get really drunk so, not exactly healthy lifestyle and still didn't encounter second attack for a years I don't drink sodas and any kind of juices, only water. and alcohol drinks when is occasion. plenty of vegetables and olive oil in everyday food and drink plenty of water baking soda - that can bring your blood ph to neutral - just one smallest spoon in glass of water once/twice per day in some 10 days period - I think regular drinking of that can bring you another trouble (surf the net) but it helped some people to stop attacks - I did that 10 days round personally, i think that walks helped - 2-3 kilometers per day only of normal walk on fresh air - it is just walk to buy groceries. plus some food adjustment and avoiding beer.
