In a surprise move, Polish President Andzrej Duda said Monday he was vetoing two judicial reform laws that cleared the nation?s Parliament Saturday that would have allowed the ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS) to consolidate power over the judicial system.

?I have decided to send back to Parliament ― in which case to veto ― the law on the Supreme Court, as well as the law on the National Council of the Judiciary,? Duda said in a news conference.

The proposed laws ?would not strengthen the sense of justice in society,? he said, claiming they would instead amount to appropriation of the courts. ?These laws must be amended.?

The legislation would have allowed the PiS to force the resignation of all of Poland?s Supreme Court justices and appoint its own members, as well as increase the party?s power over personnel decisions by the judiciary council.

Duda was widely expected to approve the bills, given that he hasn?t strayed far from the PiS? populist, nationalist policies since he won the presidency as its candidate in 2015. He oversaw the passing of a law in late 2015 that hampered the country?s system of checks and balances.

You forget that parliament elections happens every few years. So they may lose that power over judges after next election.
Basically this would be ANY (that is elected at that time) parliament power over judges.

As for comfort - there is actual "dictator" in Europe, in Belarus. Does not seem to bother anyone much, so Polish "dictator" would be ok as well.

By the way previous and legendary "dictator" in Singapore was the one who made Singapore great again.

If the direction is right, "dictatorship" is often way faster and better than all talk no action democracy.

About a year ago same shit. The media in poland is like 90% owned by Foreign companies (mostly german). The gov't wanted to make a law that no more then 49% of a media company can be foreign owned. Again - all the tv stations and news sites up in arms. "Attack on freedom of the press!" they'd shout. The irony? Germany has such a law.

It's basically foreign owned media vs the polish gov't because they won't follow the narrative and are trying to gain more independance. We don't have a balance like in the US where you have CNN on one end and say Fox News on the other end - It's basically all leftist, non-stop anti-government and the occasional pro-"refugee" stories with a few small independant right-leaning news sites in the mix.

Obviously some random german citizen doesn't give a fuck about Poland any more then I give a fuck about the specific inner workings of Germany that have no effect on me, but businesses and the DE gov't definately seem to be very interested. A sovereign poland is very bad for many companies, and big companies do hold political sway. Poland is losing a ton of money due to capital flight - all these companies aren't paying taxes in PL at all, profits are all being transferred out of the country. The current gov't is trying to tighten that up whereas the previous government was just following instructions. Hell, they were claiming coal mines weren't worth running, selling them for pocket change to foreign investors, and suddenly these same coal mines are making money hand over fist. They did the same shit with land. Public land and forests being sold for fucking pocket change to foreign investors - now there's laws against it. Or even why was the labour market in Germany opened up to polish nationals? It's not so we live better here - it's so they could suck up skilled workers.

There's almost 40 million people here, that's almost half the population of germany - a very big market and alot of money to be made.

If germany were about to ban porn, and I had influence I would use it to try to stop that because it would be against my interests. The same thing here is happening with german companies. Media companies have investors, these investors own other companies, they don't like the way something is going so they push their agenda.

We have probably well over a million Ukrainian migrants here, but I assume you are referring to the African migrants. Logic dictates that if those migrants were in fact skilled workers/doctors/specialists etc , then the countries that they are headed to would want to keep them for themselves rather then coming up with relocation schemes. The numbers are much larger, and also don't forget that we're talking not just about foreign owners but companies in poland that are owned by foreign capital, and we're not talking about some german guy buying a 1000m2 lot in some village near the german border. For instance Ikea Polska is still swedish capital but now it's a polish company. It's enough someone starts an SPZOO here and suddenly it's a polish company buying the land and they don't need any special permissions.

You terribly wrong. EU is an oligarchy ruled by Germany through Commissioner Junker. European Commission is not elected by the people, but nominated by each country and its members are named "commissioners" (such resemblance to soviet commissars, don't you think?).

As far as I know, US constitution starts with "We the people". You said until now that Hillary won popular votes, but in this case, PiS won popular votes (the people voted for that party), still you accuse them of dictatorship.

All countries from Eastern Europe (Poland, Romania, Baltic States) are committed to support its main ally, United States (whatever president had or has). EU leaders (read Merkel and Junker), on contrary, they want to sell again the Eastern Europe countries to their big neighbor (CCCP) for cheap gas, oil and a market where to sell their products.
