I have been doing that since 2006, although I keep re-introducing poultry. Fish, egg, dairy and poultry modified vegetarian. It's so easy to do given the wide variety of options available. If you want to cut out poultry then you'll need backup food (I like to carry several packs of dried salmon and dried tuna jerky from Whole Foods). They keep fresh for 1+ year or more.

There was as study done not that long ago that pointed out people who ate beef and pork lived shorter lives, and people who ate white meat (fish, chicken) lived longer, so let that be something to give you further encouragement.

Not being able to eat meat or dairy is a real pain in the ass.

Too much effort to get all the same protein, carbs, nutrients, etc from beans.

Lots of people do it tho.

Those videos can be quite shocking. I wish they would treat animals more humanely, it would add less than a penny to each pound of meat.

I've been a vegetarian for years (no fish) but be careful eating lots of tuna, it is so filled with mercury it's bad to eat more than once a week. Pregnant women are told not to eat it ever because it contains so many heavy metals.

Curious why dont the I do not eat meat because its cruel etc people, embrace eating insects then. They are easier to raise, provide more protein than nearly any other source for less resources into them. The devastate some crops. Plus I guess you could say they are plants enemies in some regards.

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? November 5, 2004 ? The U.S. Tuna Foundation (USTF) today stated that by finding that mercury levels in women and young children are very low and "not of concern," a new study from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) should reassure all Americans that eating fish, such as canned tuna, is safe and should be encouraged because of the many health benefits associated with seafood consumption.

Published in the November 5 issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the CDC's new study confirms that mercury levels from fish consumption for women and young children in the U.S. are well below any level of concern. Specifically, CDC researchers used the ongoing National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to analyze the amount of mercury in the blood of more than 3,600 women of childbearing age and 1,500 children aged one to five years and found that all had mercury levels significantly below the threshold for any known risk.

Of added significance, the new CDC study updated previous estimates of mercury levels in women and young children and found that concentrations in the blood of American women have actually declined over a four-year period (1999-2002). While CDC estimated that 8 percent of U.S. women had mercury levels at or slightly above the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) "reference dose" in 1999, this number has dropped to only 6 percent. What makes this finding even more significant is the CDC's conclusion that women with mercury concentrations at this slightly higher level are not at risk because EPA built in a ten-fold safety factor when it established its reference dose.

At the same time, the new CDC report confirms previous findings that no child in the U.S. has mercury levels that are even close to the EPA's reference dose and are not at risk from consuming seafood.

Most of the time the only animal I eat is fish. I kind of slipped off the wagon the last few weeks and have been eating chicken (free range but still) and am feeling sluggish for it. Going to have the rest of the month be vegetarian for me to make up for it. I always feel a ton better when I eat a mostly vegetarian diet.

I like meat too much to not have it in my diet. So eat meat be happy and maybe not live as long or don't eat meat and be miserable eating the crap needed to replace it and maybe live a few years longer, but those are the diaper wearing wheelchair years at the end of your life that I would rather avoid anyways so bring on the RED MEAT

I have been off red meat and pork since December of last year. So far so good.

I tried to remove turkey and chicken from my diet and I am not having nearly as much luck. I don't know if I will be able to remove chicken completely. I will cut down though.

I follow a fish-only diet -- gave up red meat, poultry, other white meat in 2003. The key is not only relying solely on fish as a protein source; there are veggies and grains that are just high in protein, such as quinoa, lentils and fava beans.

Exactly and it really isn't any more effort that eating meat. I never eat tofu and very few meat substitutes and still get plenty of all the vitamins and minerals I need when I do the fish only of vegetarian plans. It really isn't hard and a lot of people eat meat free meals and just don't label it as vegetarian.

I was a really bad vegetarian for 7 years. I ate fish and dairy... not really a vegetarian. I started a Vegan diet in January and it is really easy. No diary, no animal products...

as XXXJay said...nothing with a soul or that casts a shadow.

I have lost almost 40 pounds since January and it is still dropping. My health numbers are spot on!

People like the Japanese that have diets very high in vegetables and fish tend to live longer and have less chronic illnesses. Meat is not bad for you, but the quality of the meat (grass fed organic is best) and the overall ratio of fat/protein/carbs is important and of course, your activity level is another factor.

Being a vegetarian or a vegan doesn't guarantee you are or will be healthy; it's a combination of wholesome, minimally processed foods 80-90% of the time and exercise that lay the foundation for good health.

I find that the healthiest diet is one of moderation. If you eat real food most of the time, there are many combinations that will yield the same results whether it be plant heavy or meat heavy.

Here are some good reads:

I usually only eat fish and organic chicken breasts unless I get really bad cheeseburger cravings and then I will eat In N Out.

I don't care about animal cruelty or the sort. I only care about myself and living longer and decreasing my risk for heart disease and cancer but I can't go complete vegetarian though because it's too hard, I need a little meat but I try to eat organic and white meats such as chicken and salmon.

I don't care about not eating eating meat because its cruel to animals etc. I only care about myself and my health. I want to decrease my chances of diseases and problems later on in life. I put myself #1.

I also eat a lot of virgin olive oil and garlic. I try to be healthy.

Hi there. First and foremost, don't feel guilty based on what you saw. Those types of videos are generally really harsh and are meant to scare people. *hugs* If you take it as a impetus to learn, than kudos. ...but seriously, don't feel guilty. There's room on this planet for all sorts of dietary lifestyles. I don't think any choice is bad. I guess what I'm saying, is that you can't judge...and most of all, don't judge yourself harshly by what you eat. Life is too short to feel bad about that.

With that said, I suggest doing a lot of research and talking to a nutritionist (or maybe 2) before making any major changes to your diet. Making big life changes without knowing what you'll need to do to supplement could be dangerous. I've been vegan for over 15 years and it's been fine for me. It's NOT a change I'd suggest to anyone, though. Most people can't stand cooking as much as that type of dietary choice requires. I adore cooking, so it's no problem for me.

I wish you the best of luck with any choice you make. Feel free to add me to icq if you'd like to chat further.

You shouldn't make any big lifestyle changes without investigating them first. Totally vegan would be too much for me but it really isn't that hard to get a proper diet as a vegetarian.

HAHA.
Protein wise though it would not. Filling you up though can be done with a variety of other foods in the meal. We are just talking protein sources after all.

I am personally very down with eating meats. This live longer, less chance of meteors shooting out of your ass or whatever claims are for the most part full on BS. Anyone with a brain can check assorted cultures that live very long healthy lives and they all eat differently, some primarily fish, others lots of grains and oils, others into starches and meats, so forth.

Yet fuck it, people in this country still think buying chicken labeled hormone free is worth paying extra for.

I'm all for as little processed meats as possible, controlling the amount of red meat going into the body.

Add in portion control, kick junk foods, all sodas (most sugar) and the beast - stop eating out all together. You have a easy healthy life, now just don't be lazy and it's enough exercise for most, others you won't need as much to produce results.

But I can't deny a big ass thick juicy steak or ribs smothered in hot goo, bacon/burgers.. How can anyone live life after taking away such pleasures? I often wonder if these people do anything dangerous in life, like jay walking..

I have lost almost 40 pounds since January and it is still dropping. My health numbers are spot on!

Congrats!
