Health Nuts: After Your "Lifestyle Change"...

...did you have any major changes in your life?

By that I mean, I am sure a number have watched the documentaries where people have changed to a plant based diet, Jenny Craig, no sugar, Weigh Watchers, or whatever. Upon changing their diet (or lifestyle) they drop all kinds of weight, are no longer taking 12 pills per day, or are not diabetic anymore, etc.. For those who've made a change in lifestyle and diet, have you had any changes?

Earlier this year I had went to the Dr's because I had some ear ringing and higher blood pressure to have blood work done. After that, even before getting the results back, I went to Barnes and Noble and picked up some books to change my diet (or lifestyle). I cooked more of my own meals, and found a way to get the fruits and vegetables in my diet among other things. I also cut my diet coke intake in half. I also pushed myself on the treadmill for 30 minutes a day.

After roughly 7 months:

* Acid Re-flux GONE! I had been suffering for a decade with that shit. Not a pill since.
* Sleep Apnea GONE! Again, I had really bad for years.
* Allergies and Sinuses. I used to take Clarion-D twice daily 2/3 of year. One box in 2011.
* Less Tired and Fatigue. I used to take at least one nap daily. No more.
* Better Quality of Sleep.
* 1-3 Office Visits Daily (i.e. taking a shit)
* Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, and what not back within normal levels.
* Rarely use my freezer for anything anymore. 90% of groceries used to be frozen.

I now have managed to work in the daily servings of fruits and vegetables with juicers and smoothies. Which is something I never could have done realistically without them as I do not care for them. My grocery bill is easily 25-40% per month. I have to make a trip 1-2 times a week, where I used to be able to shop once for an entire month.

After cutting out most refined sugars, and drinking a blender full of green drink every day(kale, spinach, spirulina, fruits and berries etc.) for about 4 months:

1. Lost 18 lbs(cardio also)

2. No more acid reflux

3. I shit like a champ

4. I fuck like crazed weasel in a cornfield.

Regarding the freezer comment above...my freezer has been getting some extra mileage, from all of the frozen bags of veggies I keep in there. I read that its better than buying fresh, because half the nutrients are gone by the time its shipped and sitting on the shelf waiting to be bought. Then it sits in the house waiting for you to eat it. Frozen broccoli, for example contains one ingredient -- broccoli -- and the nutrients are flash frozen when its put in the packaging -- until it goes into my Ninja blender.

here's an good article on that:

after consuming less healthy food and drinking more beer, I feel much better (again).
the only problem seems to be within the belly region.
my doctor said that if I do not die before I could become 200 years of age.

Around 40-50 lbs depending on the scale used (home versus dr's).

That said, I recall some remark you had said to others about the difference between 'diet' and a life style change. You were not the only one who's said it on multiple occasions, but it really is true. You have to change everything about how you shop, and look at food. I am not saying get fanatical, but there are many changes you notice (like with my allergies) that make a huge fucking difference.

I used to literally be on Clariton-D from spring through fall. I could not go outside when the pollen was falling like snow, or really high because I would have all sorts of issues without the pills. This year, I just realized today, I bought one box all year. I rarely took any sinus, or allergy, medication. I did have a half dozen sinus headache days, but normal Tylenol and a nap handled it.

That is the only thing in my freezer now a days. The frozen fruit. However, as previously mentioned, 90% of what I used to buy was frozen foods. I could shop once, and be good for a month. Now I have to shop 1-2 times a week. Not so much for the smoothies, but for some of the other stuff needed for juicer, salads, and daily meals.

I used to have to take Prilosec daily for years because I would have issues with acid reflux. While mostly at night, I had a lot of stomach issues until the change in diet. Within a week or two of changing my diet, it went away completely and I have not had to take pills for it since.

I can now eat tomatoes, Mexican, and some other spicy foods I had avoided for years.

That's fantastic news man! Congrats! I bet your moods, daily feelings, basic outlook on life has changed, too, not just because of the weight loss but the overall focus on healthy living. Yah, diets don't work but lifestyle changes definitely do. Goals, once reached, lose their interest but if it's a daily goal, a lifestyle goal, then it's easier to accept. It's just "you" now, not something you're doing until you hit a magic number then can go back to how you used to be. LOL

Anyway, nice job man!!!

How did you figure that out?

Did you do an experiment yourself? Or did you go to the DR's and get tested?

That is also very true.

I used to work all the time, and literally sat in my office working most of my day. Not the 16-18 hours straight days like I did back in my 20's and when working online porn was new and fun. But I still would do some major stretches.

Most of this year I have just focused on myself and getting healthier. The 4-0 is around the corner and it's a good time to take stock and make those changes anyway... even without the initial blood pressure alert that started this.

some awesome results guys.. keep it up.

I'm having some issues with allergies and sleep apnea myself, i'm trying to shed some pounds before i have to do anything drastic about it. I'm already back in the gym at full force, i just need to step things up diet wise. I like the smoothie approach. I need to get back into those.

If you need a blender, look into one of these.

It's one the best purchases I've ever made....like having a wood chipper in your kitchen.

I can't stand smoothies and "mean green" juice (kale, spinach, lemon, ginger, etc.).

I still do drink them on a daily basis as a way to get in the needed fruits and veggies. It does help you handle your daily calories and eat less. I would have to look for some of the articles I had researched and read, but it has something to do with fiber in the drinks that trick your body/stomach into feeling full, and for longer. It also does something in regards to how your system metabolizes sugars preventing the spike in insulin you get from the normal western high fructose diet.

Beyond the high blood pressure in my 30's, I have no interest in wearing the dark vader sleep apnea mask. The GF had said some of that was getting worse the past few years and would keep here awake with worry all night.

If the benefit of lifestyle change means dropping a few pant sizes, no vader mask, and all of my blood tests within the 'norms' it's worth it I suppose. It does take some getting used to, that is for sure. You have to learn a new way to deal with your nutrition and eating patterns.

I guess it comes down to investing the time and money into your "temple" by prevention now. Or pay for it later in life via death or larger health problems.

Amen. I love da pizza.

I am not a nazi about this healthy lifestyle. I still will get pizza, on occasion, on the weekend. However, during the week days I am pretty regimented. There is also a weak pizza recipe I make from this book that is not half bad.

I use a mix of cook books to find a few recipes I enjoy to cook. While I am not diabetic, I have a few of those cook books as well. I find that there are few cook books that really give me a good enough variety to the tastes and things I like. Between 3-5 cook books I can fill up a month with some healthy meals mixed in with "mean green" and smoothies.

I started eating massive amounts of food and drinking a ton of nutrition drinks with a buttload of corn maltodextrin in them. I've gained 35 pounds of mostly lean mass and my max 3rm squat has increased to 355.

yeah sounds like a plan.. I have a feeling my high blood pressure has a lot to do with my snoring at night.. leads to terrible sleep patterns ( i have serious insomnia already ) and the air blockages definitely can spike your bp so it's something I know i need to fix. I also want to avoid the breathing mask.. seems like something i wouldn't even enjoy if i was in my 90's no less 30's.

One thing that keeps me out of processed foods is getting all my foods at the local market instead.. Fruit, vegetables, meats... all direct from the farms and not overly processed so I figure that is a good start anyway.

i have a cheap sears one i have used for years, haven't had any problems with it really. Yours looks bad ass though. Do these do anything the others can't?

oh i should mention i've been using my blender for a lot of soups lately as well. I make some extremely simple ones using vegetables i find in season mostly.. lately it's been broccoli and squash. A little salt and pepper makes these things taste fantastic, believe it or not.
