I always thought the original book version of The Shining was horrible. One of the few cases where the movie is better than the book (The Godfather would be another). Stephen King is really a pretty shitty writer.

Although I prefer Dean Koontz to King - I wouldn't label King a "shitty writer". Perhaps inconsistent with the quality at times...but he's cranked out a few good ones over the years.

Although, I couldn't even get beyond page 75 of Lisey's Story or Duma Key.
The Shining ranks near the top of my list, Aren't many that I haven't read.

So? Dan Brown sells record breaking numbers and his books are truly horrible. When it comes to sales of books - even more than moves - numbers mean absolutely nothing. People are especially lazy when it comes to choosing what to read. |

The problem with a Stephen King or an Anne Rice or a John Grisham or any "mega" writer is they crank out volume after volume, page after page, this non-stop stream of verbiage that the writing almost HAS to be 'slick' just so you can get through all those words. If you get into one of these writers be prepared to read like 50+ novels. Wasn't Tommyknockers or The Stand like 1000+ pages?
No way jose.

Can't agree on that. He is a great character writer and his books are awesome. As about the "Shining" movie, I don't even remember what it was about if you ask me. Jack Nicholson was starring there, right? Nothing else I could remember about it.
BTW, did you read "The Dark Tower"?

When people continue to read 500 to 1000 page books by an author, it usually is a sign that the author is an above average writer and that those readers aren't lazy.
True, King follows an often predictable formula ..... says so himself, write about what you are familiar with. That's why most of his characters are authors or teachers. Despite this, he still makes sales and does so based on his name alone without any Fifty Shades Of Grey hype or intense marketing.

I should add that some of favorite King stories are the ones he wrote earlier as Richard Bachman. I really liked The Running Man, The Long Walk, Roadwork and the story that started all the school shootings across the US: Rage. That collection if excellent.

most writers aren't truly appreciated until they are long gone, king will be remembered as exactly this..
people have a problem with popular, they think they lose their black sheep card if they like anything that most others do so they draw up reasons to dislike them.

I have read a lot of King. I would not call him a great writer. He's a fairly average writer. Incredible storyteller, though.
I enjoyed Doctor Sleep a lot. Started 11/22/63 last night!

Stephen King is a mediocre writer. He's written a couple good books, a handful of terrible ones, and the rest are mostly average. He got lucky early on when one of his books got adapted into a very popular movie and his popularity snowballed from there. Basically he was in the right place at the right time.
Popularity doesn't equal good. Why is it that crappy movies made by hacks (Like Michael Bay, for instance) that make a lot of money are bashed but books written by hacks are assumed to be amazing just because the author is popular? |

Those were released under the name Richard Bachman beginning with Rage in 1977 because he wanted to see if his writing would sell without the name Stephen King attached to it. And it did. By that time The Shining was being published, Salem's Lot was already on the shelf, he was working on The Stand and Carrie was just released as a film. Quote:
It most certainly had nothing to do with having bestselling books and numerous short stories published under two different names.

A lot of people don't know it - but Stephen King got his earliest start in porn mags. Some of his early short stories were published in adult magazines.
I remember reading The Raft in a Gallery mag sometime around 1980. |
