If there were some kind of influx of black people killing white people and saying they were doing it because Dr. Dre or Ice Cube told them to I would then agree that these people wield heavy influence, but that isn't the case.

Sure, musicians do influence their fans to a degree, but for most it manifests itself as wanting to dress like them or talk like them or live like them. I can't ever remember hearing about a black person killing a white person because a rapper suggested they should (although it could have happened and we just don't know about it). This country, does, however, have a history of white people killing black people simply because they are black.

If there were an outbreak of rap-influenced racial shootings you can bet there would be a much stronger public reaction to these people.

We may have to agree to disagree on this one. I personally think the lines of racism in this country run a lot deeper than many people would like to think.

I think there are a lot of people who are racist and either don't admit it or may not even realize it and it angers them to see anyone have something that they can't even if they don't really want it or care to have it.

Sure, there is plenty of hypocrisy in this arena but at the end of the day for me it comes down to this. Ask yourself this question. If you could say racist stuff and there would be no repercussions for your words would you do it? If the answer is no, then ask yourself why you give a shit what others can or cannot say because even if you could do that you wouldn't. It's like wanting to be given a crate full of cottage cheese even if you hate cottage cheese.

To ME, it's about the culture and creating divide. A young black kid hears this stuff, without ever being exposed to white kids, and starts to believe it. Hopefully he's raised well enough to never assault or kill someone, you're right, few do, but it would be naive to think that they don't carry around that hatred or at BEST, trepidation.

You're not born with racism, it's taught to you. That music is teaching it and furthering the divide. The very divide the black community preaches needs to be closed. That's my problem. Which is NO different than white parents teaching their kids shitty morals when it comes to race. Contrary to what the black community will tell you, the divide that exists today is the fault of BOTH races.

Do I say racist stuff? Sure. 99% of the time it's in jest. My reasoning there is I don't want to treat those from a different race any different than I treat someone from my race.

Stereotypes are funny. Sometimes because they're so ridiculous, other times because they're eerily accurate. We've lost our sense of humor today because we're so afraid of offending everyone.

If people focused more on celebrating themselves and, dare I say it, their cultural DIFFERENCES, the world would be a much better place. But we want to pretend that whites, black, asians, etc etc are EXACTLY the same. We should all be TREATED the same, but culturally we're different. I'm not saying any culture is better or worse than the other, but they ARE different. Instead of trying to deny it, we should all celebrate it, acknowledge the differences and learn from each other. Until we do, we're never going to achieve any semblance of unity.

When we can do that, the fear of the unknown will go away. And that's pretty much the basis for all racism...fear of the unknown. It won't happen in my lifetime, or my kids. Hopefully one day it will, but at this point, I'm not very optimistic.

I'm sure the music does influence some people's beliefs, but I think it is a very small number people and it as a pretty small impact on them. I feel that family, friends and surroundings play a much bigger role in it.

I grew up in a very small, redneck town. We only had a few radio stations you could pick up and there was no internet so outside influence was pretty small, yet there were tons of people I knew growing up who were racist.

I, honestly, never spoke to a black person until I was a Sophomore in high school. That year we got our first black kid in school. He was very nice, very cool and a good guy to hang out with. Half the students in school wouldn't talk to him or had some kind of racist thoughts towards him. He started dating a white girl (there were only white girls in the school) and tons of people flipped out. They even went off on her. These are all people who had never spoken to him. That racism was learned at home.

If anything I think the music might help reinforce it, but when I look at the video of these kids and I compare it to Dr. Dre lyrics I see two different things.

I do agree fully that the divide is on both sides. I have said for years that you should never say something or call someone something that you wouldn't want others to call you. It is ridiculous to call your friend a Ni**er and think it is fine then turn around and get upset when the wrong person calls you it.

In a perfect world we would all just embrace our differences, celebrate them and enjoy life. Sadly, racial prejudiced is alive and well and until we can squash that we will never have anything remotely resembling racial harmony.

I am just amused when people see something like this video and their response is not that it is bad, or those kids are stupid or anything like that, it is that if someone else did it it would be okay. To me it is like they aren't angry that these people did what they did, but they are angry that someone else may have been able to do what they did and get away with it. I don't know if they are jealous, or envious or they like to play the victim or what, but it fascinates me to see it happen.

But you can tell the difference between simple jokes -- which may not be harmless to the target -- but are still just jokes vs true hatred for other races. And like Kane said, a lot of the time people who are racist don't even know they are.

So I think there's a difference between saying something "racial" and being a true racist -- like those kids on that bus. You can bet they were raised to be this way, and it doesn't surprise me that it's in what is basically considered America's heartland. I feel bad for anyone who may have been caught up in that situation who didn't agree with what was going on. There had to be a few, or else how would the video have gotten out?

As you mention, it all has context. A woman calling another woman a bitch isn't the same thing because there isn't a history of violence and degradation behind the word bitch.

Even without the context I have always felt that you shouldn't call someone something in fun that you wouldn't want anyone to call you. If you are a fat guy and you call another fat guy a slob, or even refer to yourself as a slob then you can't get upset when someone else calls you a slob.

If you don't want to be called a slop, lead by example and don't use the word.
