:stop We eat 100 acres of pizza a day in the U.S.

We do love our pizza -- all 100 acres of it that we eat every day here in the United States. That's 3 billion pizzas, or 46 slices (23 pounds), of the stuff for every person in the country, every year. (H/t to The Week for gathering those stats in 2011.) Every second, 350 slices are sold. And if you're wondering about our taste in toppings, well, Americans consume 251.7 million pounds of pepperoni annually.

Now, as pizza's biggest day, Super Bowl Sunday, approaches (70 percent of viewers of The Big Game say they'll have at least one slice), come researchers telling us we're feeding our children too much pizza, as my colleague Roberto Ferdman reports on Wonkblog.

This is, of course, serious. There's little that is healthful for you in pizza, which, as I'm sure you know, is loaded with fat and salt. But the study of 11,000 kids and adolescents also turned up the news that pizza is the second-leading source of calories in the diets of America's children and that 20 percent of people aged 2 to 19 eat pizza on any given day. When they do eat pizza, children consume about 400 calories worth and teenagers chow down about 600 calories.

That 400 to 600 calories wouldn't be a big deal at all if kids were more active like they were when I was growing up. Back then we rode bikes, played soccer, football, baseball, hockey, street hockey (winter or summer). We walked to and from school.

A pigout every now and again on za was nothing at all.

Btw not all pizza is bad for you. It's either greasy and loaded with cheap ingredients swimming in saturated/trans fat or you're buying from a place that uses quality stuff, fresh tomatoes, onions, peppers, mushrooms, real actual cheese, quality meats that aren't oozing oil, grease, fat etc.

You pay extra but it's so worth it.

'back in the day' we didn't eat it a fraction as often so your exercise comparison is out the window. you can exercise twice as much you said you did and can't burn off that much sugar in a single day. add in hyper sugared drinks and desserts with every meal and its even more impossible. kids need to get more exercise, no doubt, but that is not even close to a solution.

Even when I was a kid pizza was a special treat. Maybe once a month. Once a month pizza is not going to do much damage to anyone. Twice, three times a week is a different story. Which is what many people do now when they don't cook at home and eat out for breakfast, lunch, and half of their dinners.

If you make it on your own, you can create workarounds that work for your body. It may not be "pizza" in the traditional sense, but more of a metaphorical sense. Could be fun to experiment.

i think the problem is the combo of flour, sweetened tomato sauces, fatty cheeses and fatty meats all combined. i'd prolly have to figure out workarounds for each of those......i've always dug a cornbread crust pizza, that might be a good place to start.

You don't need the tomato sauces, the cheeses, or the meats for a good pizza.

Few options here that I think you should take a look at: Menu | Papa Murphyâ??s

Garlic sauces and oils can be used as a base instead. Fresh vegetables, raw, grilled, sautéed. Healthy and clean meats, chicken and fish. Healthy cheeses.

Wouldn't that be dependent on the dough used? The rest of the pizza could be tomatoes, onions, misc peppers, chicken, garlic, small amount of cheese.

yeah, that's why i was thinking a cornbread crust may be the way to start. i haven't come across pizza that's delivered that doesn't have the classic crust. when i lived in the bay area, there was a pizza shop in SF that had unique pizza doughs, that's where i first came across the cornbread crust.
