GFY parents with kids under 12...
What are your kids reading? I am working with a friend to try to get her two kids (a boy and a girl) into reading more. They are both under 12..youngest is 7. If you have kids that age what are the books that they are reading and enjoying?

This probably won't help - but my daughter is 11 months old, and her favorite book is "Elmer's Day" --- she loves turning to the page where Elmer the elephant visits his friend Lion --- she points to the lion and roars loudly, and then breaks into giggles

Hmmm..
My son is almost 8. He's read the entire mouse and the motorcycle series. http://www.harpercollinschildrens.co...0380709243.jpg One of his favorites was Captain Underpants. http://www.scholastic.co.uk/zone/ima...pants_logo.jpg Maybe try things like charlotte's web.. if they are girls, judy blume is good for that age group too. (9-10)

You'd be best off posting a thread in the sell and buy thread jdavid. Anyway, regarding books for the boy, try Jennings and Darbishire. I loved it when I was that age.

The key is actually to get books in a subject that the kids like. And one thing that works well is you set up a night time bed rule. Bed time is bed time, but they can stay up as long as they want so long as they are reading and in bed. My daughter usually reads an hour each night before getting tired and turning her light off.

My daughter's 8. She's currently reading and loving Artemis Fowle. She also loves the Harry Potter series. She devoured Daniel X for Christmas (a James Patterson for kids).

About 50 of them went to a midnight showing (on a school night) the day the movie opened. Before Christmas, we had to travel together on a bus and stay in a hotel for 3 days. Four of them brought LIFE SIZE cardboard cutouts of Edward Cullen. They drug those things around everywhere we went and took about 10,000 pictures with them. I've also noticed that all their email, facebook, and myspace names now have 'Edward', 'Bella', 'Vamp', or 'Sparkle' in it. Stephenie Meyer is going to be unbelievably rich.

The whole Twilight thing makes me feel old because it is pretty much the first kid craze to totally pass me by. I didn't even know about them until the film.

My daughter is 13 and lovedlovedloved the whole Twilight series. She's loved everything by Scott Westerfield as well.
My 7-year-old is digging the oldie but goodie "Choose your own Adventure" books. It's really fun to see him getting into reading FINALLY! I find books by looking on Amazon for recommendations from the books I already know they like. So far, that's worked out really well. |

My kids are younger as well. Mine loves Monkey and me, Scaredy Squirell Series and the Julius the monkey series.
If you want a boy to read more i remember the old Choose your own adventure(for the novice) and the Fighting Fantasy books. Reading and gaming at the same time. I am not sure if they are around anymore though |

I take my 4 year old to the library every week and we check out 10 new books. I put her in the appropriate section and let her choose what she wants to read. I read her 2 books every night before she goes to bed. The library is an amazingly undervalued resource ...

hey sarah
![]() I don't have kids....but I do have younger cousins, etc. 12 year old girls would probably love reading the Sweet Valley Twins//High Series. Also my younger cousins still read the babysitter's club. Those were good ones I remember. |

3 cheers to that...parents should spend less time sticking their kids in front of the boob tube and get them in the library from a young age. I remember when I was a reader they always had these cool reading clubs. They'd give you books, stickers and even free food from In-N-Out if you read so many books. Was a great idea. Kids should be taught to love to read. I'm so glad I was. |

My boy is 5 and really turning into a great reader. Got him on old school stuff like Dr. Seuss and Richard Scarry and all those golden books. He also likes The Olivia, Mercy Watson and Charlie & Lola and anything by Mo Willems books.

Here is an excellent resource to find appealing books for kids according to age http://www.readkiddoread.com/home
This resource site was created by the popular fiction novel writer, James Patterson. Apparantly his son hated to read which is why he created the site. |

We make weekly trips to the local library, but last weekend I had to go by myself. I was sure to pick a book for my daughter. I got "Jingle Bells, homework smells". Seriously. Cute little book.

My 8/yo daughter reads ANYTHING by R.L.Stine, and (very) random things put out by Scholastic.
Devin-GTS Choose Your Own Adventure books used to be my fav books as a kid, I'm gonna dig some of them up and see if she likes those. -Loki-

My daughter is turning 5 next week, she has a shitload of books and her favorites are the Wizard of Oz series, I've been reading those to her almost nightly since she was 3.
She also likes the Shel Silverstein books like Where the Sidewalk Ends. I've got her on the I See Sam books right to learn to read (http://www.iseesam.com/) I actually have my old set of those books from the early 70's that I used to learn to read myself. |

Chronicles of Narnia. Good books at any age but I was around 12 when I started reading them
![]() If the 7 year old is a girl, the Fancy Nancy books are cute. And you can never go wrong with Curious George or Dr. Suess, IMHO Sarah, I just started reading the Twilight series today - so far, so good - worth it for a quick read even if it's geared towards teens ![]() |

lock them in a room with homework and books, they will choose the books. You gotta make books the better choice of alternative things they could be doing.
p.s. make sure the chair isnt too comfy

All of the RL Stine Goosebump books. You can get them on Amazon used... for WAY WAY WAY cheap... I read them over and over and over when I was a little girl...
Also, like someone mentioned, The Babysitter's Club books... ADORE THEM. For me, Twilight isn't for kids under 14/15. The sexual tension in book 1 is enough to make grown women swoon... And like Loki also said.. random Scholastic books... How To Eat Fried Worms I'm Going To Be Famous James and the Giant Peach
