exactly! we're dealing with two critcal issues:

1) recession
2) abundance of free content

1 is feeding 2. everyone is trying to figure out a magic recipe but both issues are a waiting game.

i see lots of restaurants in my area going out of business and it's not because other restaurants are giving away free food.

my traffic has increased but ratios haven't increased with it so people are still looking, just not buying...yet!

from my experience with price points the lower price works well for stuff like special offers, mailers, etc... especially when it's time limited because the impulse becomes greater (i.e. black friday).

that's just the way things are but it's up to the site owner how they want to deal with it. when we first opened our site 5 years ago we have 50 video and pic sets and we charged $24.95. now when you join you get over 600 videos and pic sets for $29.95. i guess you can say that the first ones to join are pissed because you get alot more for your money now.

i bought an ipod a few years ago and a few months later they came out with the same model that had twice the storage capacity and three times the battery life for the same price. did apple rip me off? was the previous model not worth the price i paid?

i can totally understand what you're saying and i think members would love to get the discounted price if you changed your price point perminently.

You might understand but your analogies are bad. You can't compare what I am saying to buying something tangible and then a couple months later a newer, better version comes out. You also comparing monthly membership fees vs one time purchases.

I think surfers feel that a site with TONS of content might be worth paying $30 for them to get access to all of that content. They get to search through it all for the stuff they like, watch it all and save everything they like. All for $30 and the whole month to sort through it all. So what you got left to offer them for month 2 for them to pay $30 again? .005% of what you already gave them for $30... it simply is not worth it for most people to rebill for just a couple updates. (this is just for picture and video sites). They can cancel with you and go sign up to another site and see another 10,000 new videos vs the 20 that you going to offer them for the same price. That is if you are lucky and they are the type to still pay and don't go to tube sites to see it all.

The solution, give them more value so it is worth it for them to pay to stay on for additional months, or give them less up front, or both. Or reduce the price beyond the first month. But the current model / methods for pic and vid membership sites is broken for several reasons, this just being one of the many things wrong them.

You are completely missing the reasons people view porn.
It's not about how many new scenes you can see.

It's about that ONE scene that really gets you off everytime. So you download that one right? But then it's ALSO about the newest scene. Especially when members are fans of the site.

I want to see that LATEST scene on my favorite site. I don't want to be left out in the cold when it comes up.

You're leaving out the biggest marketing factor of them all...member loyalty and human nature. Once someone joins a site, the majority of them are loathe to leave it. They get comfortable with what they have.

No, I'm not talking about the 1 to 2% that post on surfer forums or review site forums. Those are not real fans of porn and not our best customers. If they were they wouldn't be sitting on freesites posting, they would be in the members area of the site they pay for.

The vast majority are a "silent majority" and they tend to stick with a site and rebill until they decide to move on after a good bit (everything comes to an end). And then I find that a few months later, they tend to re-sign up and stay for a few months again.

People know what they like. And for the folks who truly love sex and porn, it has nothing to do with how many updates you have or the delivery format of the porn. It has to do with this: does it make their cock hard.

And no, just because there is a ton of generic porn for free...it still doesn't change that.

In dgraves case for instance...if I'm a fan of Chica, I am NOT going to be satisfied unless I am a member of ChicasPlace.Com and I want to follow her every update and keep up with what she's doing and correspond with her. That's what the fans who really make up the bread and butter of this industry do.

i agree that there are many flaws to the paysite model. as far as analogies goes, i thought i was right in line with the topic because aren't we comparing neflix to the average paysite? isn't that like comparing walmart to a convenience store?

you asked what is there to offer a member on month 2...simple, the same as what netflix has to offer people after the first month, fresh content! the solo girl paysite is a little different because some guys fall in love with the girl and stay for a long time. they see the value in one or two updates each week. value is in the eye of the beholder. there are people who will never join a paysite even if you offered them a $1/month membership. yet one of our members sent Chica $2k worth of bikinis!

some people keep gym memberships and never use them. i'm not sure why. maybe it's to say they belong to a gym, maybe they thin it provides some kind of motivation and someday they will start working out. who knows.

they opened a new gun club in scottsdale a few years ago and i signed up right away. i had to pay $500 to start my membership and then $20/month after that. about a year after they opened they dropped the $500 fee. i kept my membership even though i didn't go that often because my schedule was too busy. i was going to cancel and Chica told me i should keep it incase i wanted to use it. see, some people think like that. i on the other hand didn't and i knew it would be cheaper to just go in and pay for the day if i wanted to use the range.

some people have only one porn membership at a time and when they get tired of it they cancel and move to the next. sometimes they come back when you have more content, sometimes they don't. some people are members to 4-5 sites at any given time.

i've tried a number of different price points and trials. i found that sometimes the trials and low prices attract cheap people. i offered a 4 day trial once for $4.95 and a few charged back! i can't imagine anyone going through a chargeback process for $4.95! i guess the value of their time was less than $4.95.

Again, there is a difference between one off sales and recurring subscriptions.

Nobody in their right mind lets a site thank them for their loyalty by continuing to rebill them at a price higher than a new customer can get.

At best they will cancel and re-sign up at the lower price, at worst they will walk and never return.

Either way it will leave a bad taste in the customer's mouth.

so if you send out a mailer offering a special price you have to change all your existing members to the lower price?

i agree if you change your price point perminently then you should change it for everyone but what would be your explaination to the huge price cut? you could send them a "i'm sorry i've been over charging you $20/month" email but i don't think that would go over well.

this is a good question to ask porn.com did they lower all their existing member's price?

sometimes stuff like that can backfire. i got direct tv a few years ago and a month later cox called me up and offered me a great price to return. instead of being thrilled, i was pissed and asked the rep how they could offer me this great deal now but couldn't when i was a customer.

I am talking about sites with picture and videos only. If they offer value with interaction, etc and more than just a handful of updates then they are doing a good job to justify to the surfer why he should continue to pay full price, because he isn't there just to look at videos obviously.

I am sure some really quality sites that consist of just pics and videos will have some members as you say. Sites that shoot unique custom content, like a bangbus type stuff. Just straight up pictures and vids but some people may get hooked as you explain. That's reality. Most people aren't rebilling to pic and vid only sites, so there is a reason why.

It wont last. Porn is an impulse buy. The issue has always been getting the credit card out of the pocket rather than the price point.

If porn consumers really thought about value with a cool head they will just get the content through tubes and torrents rather than pay the $10. This isn't at all the same sort of product or the same sort of purchasing environment as Netflix etc.

That said, I most certainly can tell the difference between bottled water and hose water where I am from. Just smelling the water around here makes me physically sick, drinking it or even using it in ice makes me want to hurl. I'm not going to go spend $20 on a bottle of water but I'll be damned if it's my perception throwing me off.

Penn and Teller should do a show on how taste tests are useless when trying to prove taste since taste is 100% subjective. Why would what strangers think about a taste have anything to do with anybody else?

I like pizza but if a taste test showed that pizza tastes terrible, should I figure I was wrong all these years and stop eating pizza?

Taste tests are used pretty much exclusively for marketing purposes. That's the irony of that video.

I too can tell Coke from Pepsi. Funnily, you can even tell the difference between US Coca Cola products and Mexican Cokes (you can get them here in L.A.). It's been explained to me that they use cane sugar in mexico so the taste is purer. Guess I'm a victim of bullshit as well.

And I got them to lower the down considerably after I raised hell and pointed out this thread.
