My cat was severly injured sometime today - need some help/advice/support
My cat appears to have been in a cat fight. He's 12 years old and is wheezing very loudly like a snoring noise on inhalation. He has to open his mouth slightly on taking in each breath.
I looked for foreign objects but seen none. At first I thought foreign object. The side of his neck is not bleeding heavily or at all really but there was some blood earlier and is somewhat moist and pussy on one side. So it may be seeping. I am waiting for the vet to open at 7:30 this am about 6 hours away. This is tearing me up. It has just been me and my boy "Lucky" all these years. I think he prob had some severe trauma to the neck from a bite wound is my guess. Please let the next 6 hours go by fast. I think he will get by till we get to the vet but he is in misery and so am I. Really just 5 hours to go before we leave. At times he quiets down which seems good but still opens his mouth on each breath. I just need to do something to occupy my brain until we can go. He may not come home I suppose. If anyone has any insight or has ever seen this please let me know. He is resting as best he can. |

Look for a 24 hour emergency vet.
My cat is 20 years old and has problems breathing due to a lung disease but is vet-approved healthy otherwise. There's really nothing you can do other than make him comfortable until the vet opens if you can't find a 24hr place. If there's puss though that doesn't sound very promising. Could just be an infection that will go away with antibiotics. |

Can you see any puncture marks on the neck anywhere? If he will let you, use a non-perfumed soap to clean the neck area and examine for puncture marks, cuts or other damage.
Is he labouring to breathe or just wheezing? Check the color of his gums and tounge. The gums should be a pale pink color and the tounge a nice healthy pink. If either the tounge or gums is a pale white color or a pale blue color the cat is not able to fully oxygenate its blood. If the cat remains generally calm and isn't struggling too much to breathe you should be good untilt he vet opens. Most cities have 24 hour Emergency Vets. Your Vet may well forward emergency calls to them after hours or at least list their contact information. It will cost you a premium but if you're that worried, go to the Vet now.

Cats are notorious for getting an abscess from a puncture wounds. What you described sounds like it. The heavy breathing could also be from an infection.

best of luck.
I know there's a 24/7 emergency vet place by us. They charge a small premium but well worth it for things like this.

Thanks Jon, I just found something open 24 hours in Saint Cloud.
He is quiet now and resting. Doesnt seem to be getting worse. Emrg vet should be able to give me some idea and then if it requires more maybe I can take him to my local vet later. Thanks. Better get going I guess even if it costs way more. |

I fucking wunder how it got to this point we are discussing on a adult business forum how you need to stay calm for 5 hours so you can go with your pussy to the doctor. But then again, not reading your post, and just re-reading mines 10 times very fast makes it humorous also.
On a side note, Your cat will be fine. If you had a fight, do you feel happy 1-2 hours after? Let him calm down, and it will be OK soon. Cats are stronger then we think. I have 5 Cat families here, witch each 10-15 cats. I know what cats can have. Mines survive a play hour with my rottweiler without problems.

My friend says they will chrg me 3 times and with money tight I would rather hold on. We have been holding on since about 7:00 pm. (7 hours when I discovered him) He was out all day too so dont know when it happened. I looked outside, seen him in the lawnchair around noon and assumed all was fine. So I dont think it is life threatening at the moment. I just wonder what the gurgle or snoring is from. I will prob bring him in to the emerg vet soon. I just want a diagnosis. Then if it requires much more I will take him on to the regular vet. Am going to examine his neck more closely now.. |

a 24/7 vet is a good solution. glad to hear your cat feels better now, i guess the heavy breathing was just temporary stress relief, from what i know. but a vet is smarter than me

It's hard to tell how bad the wound is and it just makes him more agitated when I mess with it. I think he got bit in the lower neck is prob it.
May have traumatized the windpipe. 4 1/2 hours and we can go to his usual vet. Calling the emerg vet now.. |

Ok I called the emerg vet and they say if he is breathing OK I should prob just wait till morn and go to a normal vet as it will be way cheaper. If he struggles with breathing then I should head in.
I explained it all and she was very helpful. As long as he is getting his air (which he is) and not panicking or anything (which he isnt) I can wait. So I think were gonna hang in there another 4 hours till about 6:30 central then just go 2 miles down the road to the vet. Thanks guys so much. Pretty distressing but I feel better now. |

The noise is what alarms me. Plus he doesnt seem to be able to sleep but like you say maybe he is just in a bit of trauma. This time tho I think we will have to go in this morning. If he is still wheezing/snoring by then, we'll be heading in. I will let you all know how it goes. Thanks to everyone who replied. I cant answer all but I am reading all and I really thank you all very much. He prob does just need some time. The fact that he is hanging in there after prob at least 12 hours is a good sign I feel a little better. ![]() |

Ya know I just thought of something, you know when cats scream at each other they sometimes get this somewhat in their throat. It is like that only more intense than ever before. He is fairly quiet now. What are you gonna do. I told him. "Ill let you run, (he always has) but if something happens.." He would not be happy inside. I adopted him at about one year and he ran lots before that. Maybe he strained his thoat somehow in the fight. But I am only assuming a fight cause of the moisture on the side of his neck. Fight or foreign object is my feeling. Googled about every cat site before posting here. |

My gut feeling is he got bit on the neck and it may have cause trauma to the windpipe. That is my feeling.
So glad winter is coming. That stops him from going anywhere but right out the door. |

Thanks man. That was nice.
![]() This is the craziest cat I ever owned. He lives to hunt and be outside. A cat's cat I always say. But he has paid the price with lots of injuries. Now that he is older, prob should try and keep him in but that will never happen so it is a wing and a prayer everytime I let him out. The other day I noticed a black stray around too. But strays come and go all the time. |

Thank you CS.
Strange how the cat drives me nuts most of the time with meowing, in and out, in and out all day and all the rest. But when something happens it hits ya kind of hard. Ya just hate to see stuff like this. Sometimes I think of all the mice.. how did they feel. But then he's my cat so.. and I always try to save every animal if I can and i have saved many. I gave 5 baby bunnies (a record this year) a ride down the road this year. ![]() But that is cats I guess. I bought my first cat in 1976. Sam. In Brooklyn Center MN at the shopping center there. Mainly only cause that is what they allowed in my first apt. No dogs. And have had about 6 cats since. I have had some sad days as they all lived full lifes until the day I brought them in one day. We all (cat owners and dog owners) know sometime that day will come. I hope I bring him back home later today. He is still hanging in there. Was loud for a bit, now back to quiet tho again. 3 hours to go. Pretty serious I fear tho. for my boy |

as long you did not found little wounds on his chest and small pinches elsewhere, and the blood has stopped, then her/his natural survival instinct kicks in, they take a dark place to reload themselves and come back in 1-2 days. Seriously I am almost happy to read this was not some fake post to fill space, cause cat lovers deserve a special place on this world and the ones after this one.
Some water, some cat food, his favorite toilet, and some peace. You can test it also a little by stroking him on the head. When he/she starts purring, it is pretty much good news All my cats are farm cats, so they pretty survive World War 3 also if needed.

I thought my dog was bit by a snake while I was hiking a couple years ago. I couldn't tell because of the fur, like with your cat, but swore she was limping and just had to find out. So, I shaved her leg, lol. Sounds funny, I know, but it gave me a clear view of the wound area and to my relief, there was no bite marks. My dog is probably a lot more chill than a cat, but in all seriousness, the best way to get a look at the wound area is getting rid of the fur. This will let you see if there is any trauma there.
Yes, I'm recommending that you shave your pussy ![]()

one of my friends is a vet and works the emergency room. cool guy hes always cool when I call him out of the blue to ask him for his opinion. My two cats dont go out. But its nice to read that they can live 20 years. one of them is actually purring on my shoulder as I type. Just be sure to report back what the cause was.

This cat is more like a dog. He waits for me and welcomes me home at the car always. He folows me if I go for a walk. He literally will go for a walk and follow me. He was starving one summer night in 2000. Someone gave him to my neighbors who had a cat who would not let him eat. (and they would not put out a seperate bowl) I noticed him hanging around. Seen him walking around looking for somewhere to go. Gave him a can of tuna one night at about 2am. Gone in 10 seconds. ![]() That was that. ![]() Gave my neighbors $30 for him. He loves the outdoors. But now that he is older he isnt too tough anymore. Winter takes care of all problems. But for about 5 months in the summer he runs. He lives for being outdoors. He was also sprayed by a SKUNK 3 times! In 2004, 2006, 2008. That is a story too. ![]() So he has pushed the envelope for a long time. |

I think he got bit in the neck. When a cat dominates another cat they usually go for the neck. What the loud wheezing/snoring (upon inhale only) is all about.. that is the q. Like Mr Pheers said maybe related to an abcess that quickly developed in the throat. That makes sense and is my best guess. This board really helped. I thank you all. You're some decent dudes. I needed to talk about it. Thanks. |

Ill post some pics when I get back this morning D-Null. Might be bad news (hopefully not) so I will feel more like it then. Good or bad news.
Seems to still have some drainage from the neck wound. No blood. Just puss or saliva maybe. Def relates to the cause of the noise upon inhaling. I dont know. What a miserable night. He is fairly quiet again which is good. 2:15 |

I think it is too serious to get a purr. All my pets died of old age which is tough. Everyone when I took em to the vet, I had hopes but I never came home with one of them. I went to the very end. But sudden is def way tougher. Last one was a chunky all grey Tom named Pippy I adopted from the humane society in 1994. He went till 2002. Was only 13. Was 5 when I got him. Kidneys went from being too heavy. But he was heavy when I got him. Noone wanted him. He was the last cat I looked at and turned out to be a great cat. I'll post his pic later too. Great cat. About 17 LBs. Stocky and chunky. We'll see what happens. 2 hours. |

Thanks Bill. It is pretty tough. I looked at the lawn chair I had seen him in yesterday about noon and it does have some blood stains on. So he has been like this longer than I thought.
Leaving for the vet in about 40 mins (7:15 am central). Went out and got the carry box from the shed. I hate that box. I have never brought a cat home when using that box. But maybe this will be a first time. Plus I have been up all night and really should be going to bed. I'm alright tho. |

Remember I posted how Payoneer dropped the ball on payments. Or maybe my sponsor dropped the ball. Anyhow I missed a period and it really hurt but should be ok. Have plenty coming in, it's just about 3-4 days away. Wire will be sent today or tomorrow. Get it Mon or Tues. But thanks for your concern. Mighty nice of you. Should my friend balk (he better not) I may need to borrow a couple hundred from someone for maybe three days. But I think he will lend me it. (If he still wants to be friends as he has some money) I'll be honest, I have $8 to my name and 5 minutes left on my cell phone. Cant even call my brother. BUT I have $1200 due by wire by Monday or Tuesday from my main sponsor. I was hoping I could slide by. I slid by many times this year from paycheck to paycheck but not this time. Finally the emergency I feared came. And THIS is why payments on time are so important. Wish me luck. I dont feel good about this. He has lots of discharge on his neck. Basically laying flat on his stomach with his chin on the floor just gasping. |

keeping cats as indoor cats will greatly extend their lives and save the life of much of your wildlife.
My cat were always indoor cats. When I am ay my country house they are allowed on the deck and driveway and stay just there. As soon as I have to leave or before it get dark, inside they go! |

i was just at the 24/7 vet a couple of days ago with our 14 week old puppy... Scary shit having to make those trips.. she only had a minor stomach bug but when they are young like that it is hard to take the chance. The vet we go to here in Michigan is EXTREMELY affordable compared to anything we have in the city in windsor.
Wish you the best of luck with your cat, hope you can locate a decently priced 24/7 vet in the area, those things can be a life saver...

VJo Good luck with your Kitty.
Keep in mind these stats: Indoor cat Average lifespan = 12 year+ Outdoor cat average lifespan = 5 years or less Quote:
Of course since I live in FL my indoor cats have it better since I made a little doggie door to my big screened in patio where they can watch the ducks on the lake, all the birds lizards frogs and snakes all day, they are pretty lucky for indoor cats. Much harder when we were up north being indoors all day. Vjo, now that your cat is considered a "geriatric" you should consider leaving him indoors or limiting his outdoor activities, older cats tend to get beat up pretty bad by younger males.

+1 ![]() ![]() Not to mention traffic. I have talked to so many vets about the number of deaths from cars that they see. When people tell me, "Oh, my cat is really smart about traffic", I ask them if their cat is as smart as a 5 year old child. When they tell me "No, of course not", I ask them if they would let a 5 year old go play in traffic. Sometimes they see the point. Good luck with you kitty. .

Damn... my babies are everything to me... Sounds like your cat is fine though- providing it hasn't gotten any worse. They're pretty tough and can take a lot.
Best of luck Vjo... |

Hang in there... just show him lots of love. Animals are pretty resilient to injury. I had a dog that was stabbed in the shoulder and in the chest. The chest wound was pretty bad... the fricken vet made him wait all night and took him into surgery the next morning.
If you do end up having to leave your cat for over night observation, leave a sweater you wear in his cage so he has something with your smell on it. It helps a lot for the animals stress. |
