I believe it's a combination of eating properly and proper exercise. And what works good for one person doesn't always work good for another person.

Loosing weight is really about eating less calories and then exercising more to burn off calories. It's easy to say it, but doing it is completely another thing.

I don't eat as healthy as I should but I'm not fat.. Why? Because I'm very active, I usually walk 5 to 10 miles a day and often bike another 5 or more. I also drink a lot of water which helps increase your metabolism.

What you are proposing is absolutely unrealistic.

Calories Burned During Exercise, Activities, Sports and Workouts

You say you don't eat that good, realistically you probably do 2000-3000 calories a day in intake. Then you go out and you exercise pretty heavily, much more than the average person does. You are a very active person so the food that you eat does not matter so much.

Most people cannot spend 2-4 hours a day doing a heavy workout/activity routine, which is what would be needed in order to "eat whatever you want." The answer for most people is to control intake because countering intake with proper output is extremely difficult.

Had Rochard been eating 1800-2000 calories daily during those overweight times that he had, he would not have been overweight, despite having no time for basic exercise, let alone 2-4 hours of mountain biking.

I realize that most people can't do what I do, but I was making a point that it's intake vs what is burnt.. Think about this.. I'm looking to do an AT through hike next summer and through hikers usually burn up to 5k calories a day.. They aren't jogging, biking or doing heavy exercises but hiking and carrying a heavy pack.

Any person with working legs can walk.. You don't have to do crazy exercises routines to lose weight, you just have to burn excess calories.. Also people can walk miles a day or bike them even if working full time. It's just a matter of how much they want to do it...

i have lost almost 30 lbs since easter just by counting every calorie i take in, staying below a certain amount per day and doing occasional walks/runs (which makes it possible to eat a little extra that day)

your weight is your own decision

nobody has time to walk for 2+ hours a day. that's what it would take to burn off any extra calories you eat (anything over 2000 give or take). diet is just about everything, exercise is just a helpful tool.

I have said this before but I dropped about 30lbs after I broke my Jaw. Obviously having my jaw wired shut for a month fast tracked the weight loss. However, I have kept the weight off and its been 7 months since the wire was removed. I eat high protein, High fat and low carb. I have started exercising (weight training and running) now as well but it is not to help keep weight off its just to be healthier. It is is all about the diet. Took me way to long to figure that out LOL.

You probably eat less now as well. I'm sure your stomach shrunk during those months of recovery.

Quality of the nutrients matters as well its not as simple as calories in vs calories out. Your macro break down (proteins/fats/carbs ratio) is a huge part of it as well.

Someone who eats 3k cals/day of balanced nutrition vs someone who eat 3k cals/day of gummy bears or junk food is not going to be as strong or have the same physical attributes. You may weigh the same based on your caloric intake but your ratio of fat to muscle will be vastly different.

It might not be easy, but are you suggesting that people are physically not able to control their caloric intake?

i said it's simple, i did not say it's easy

of course very often i'd like to eat more or different stuff

and i still have nights where i drink 12 beers and then eat a burger with fries before going to bed - which throws me back a couple days

but the simple fact EVERYONE is able to follow is that you lose weight when you eat less calories than you burn

whether people have the discipline over the course of a couple of months or even years is the other question

I use the My Fitness Pal app and in their forum there are many great examples of people that lost 30, 50, 80 or even more than 100 lbs. One guy posted before and after pics after he lost 320 lbs.

I guess when you wrote, "Your weight is your own decision" I assumed you meant that attaining your desired weight is as 'easy' as making the decision to. That's what I disagreed with. But I see what you're saying now and I hear you on the 12 beers LOL ... everyone does that from time to time.

Yet countless magazines/books/articles have come out and will continue to come out on how to lose weight.

It's as simple as how much goes in vs how much goes out, really that simple. Some peoples' bodies will vary but it isn't overly extreme.

It's recommended for people not to get fat in the first place, especially when you get older. Skin doesn't always snap back and that's gross!

I have to watch what I eat, I'm able to exercise but my body isn't capable off long duration in the gym. I've got inflammation on the side of my hips (bursitis) from cycling while watching youtube vodcasts. 2-3 hours at a time. Now I'll just go 3-4 times a week and lift weights with a little cardio. I wish my body was built to be more resilient to lots of physical stress.

This is the key point. As someone who struggled with weight all their life and just recently got it under control I can say that if you are 30-60 pounds overweight it can simply be a matter of bad diet and lifestyle. When you get to the point where you are 150+pounds overweight there is something deeper going on.

A person has to figure out what makes them eat like that and what their problems are mentally and deal with them before they are ever going to take weight off in any significant way. It is just like someone who drinks. They have things that trigger their drinking and they have to learn how to deal with those. Someone who is very overweight needs to discover the root cause of this and deal with that first.

I can totally agree to that, food is like a drug for some people - usually deeply rooted psychological issues.

But no one is "big boned" and can use that as excuse

Big boned.

I am a parent and see lots of kids, especially twins and siblings and am always curious about how they can be so different bodywise.

For example, I know a set of twins who weigh exactly the same even though one eats far more than his brother. His parents tell me this but I also see the 'hungry one' eating all the time.

I also know 2 sisters age 6 and 8. The 6 year old is bigger boned, eats little and is heavier than her older sister who is skinny as a toothpick but eats more calories than many of the bigger and active boys in her class. Her sister is bigger boned and will have more weight issues later on in life, whereas the 8 year old will be able to eat whatever she wants (like her mother and grandmother) and never gain a pound.

Yes, exactly.

Yes agreed. When more people can see this then hopefully there won't be so much hate.

Good discussion

The difference in bone weights between people is less than 5 pounds, that includes men and women, tall and short. We are talking 5 pound skeletons versus 10 pound skeletons. Those possible 5 pounds do not write off the 50+ pounds that people try to void as being "big boned."

It may hurt, it may feel like a total gut check, but the first step in solving obesity is admitting it. Not creating self diagnosed diseased or mythical ailments. Admit it, accept it, solve it.

I Never, Ever, make fun of people for things they can not help.
But when it comes to things they can; fair game.
Get some fucking self discipline. Whatever it takes.

I eat 2500 - 3000 calories a day and it's EXTREMELY hard for me to put on any weight at all, so while it doesn't apply to every obese person, some people *are* built different from 'normal'. Chuck in legit medical issues, side effects of medication, and it's why I refrain from being a judgemental prick to strangers. Well, about their weight anyway

Here's the thing though... even with that - how do you know their specific circumstances, and things that may take priority? Everyone fights different battles every day, I have no way of knowing if that person is suffering depression or other psychological issues, or a multitude of other circumstances that I'd be unable to handle if it were me. You cannot, ever, experience what someone else experiences, even if you are in the same situation - much less when you aren't

Don't get me wrong I'm no saint, and slip into being a judgemental cock more than I'd like to. When I sit and actually think about it though, I usually come to a different conclusion. As for actually being *angry* at someone else's personal situation, wtf lol.

If food comes in a package or box, read the ingredients. The crap that goes into food these days has one intention. To make huge corporations richer.
