Good info. I did not know that about the bacteria.

Sorry, I must be being stupid here, how is it "difficult" to not put sugar in your food as you make it?

Surely it is a case of, oh, I don't know, just NOT PUTTING SUGAR IN YOUR FOOD?

I only drink water and coffee (without sugar), so no drink changes needed and I don't use condiments. If I want a sauce, I make the sauce.

So, it's not really hard at all. Just stop using sugar and buying supermarket food, surely?

Really? It's that simple??

I guess I can disregard all the sugar on the packaging of items most buy without thinking. You know, where they have already put the sugar in the condiments, soup, milk, juice, bread and all the rest...

I don't buy juice with added sugar, I don't think milk here has added sugar, but I don't drink it. I make soup, and make any condiment I want.

So, move here and start cooking your own food.

Just remember, if you don't want sugar, don't take the jar named sugar and pour its contents into your food.

You do not need to do that over here chief. Sugar is already IN everything. No jar needed.

I'm a bit shocked by the artificial sweetener love in this thread. Putting any man made chemical into your body isn't good.

Artificial sweeteners trick the brain into releasing enzymes to breakdown sugar that isn't in the body - leaving extra chemicals in body to be filtered, putting your liver under more stress, making your body work more than it should, for no actual benefit or gain for the body.

Eating chemicals is not a safe replacement for anything...

I get what you're saying, the first step of course is to stop eating anything processed and for people to start making what they eat out of natural ingredients. However, this diet isn't only about "added sugar" as you refer to, its about any sugar including natural. That glass of 100% natural fruit juice you refer to would most likely put you already over your daily alotment of 15g of sugar. Fruits and vegetables have natural sugar and many will not work with this eating plan as their natural sugar count is too high.

The only thing I use it in is coffee, but I think I'd rather use real sugar and take a few more steps to work off the calories and avoid trying to trick my system or whatever.

Admitedly I do have some fat on me. A bad back and lack of enough exercise over years will do that to you. Or just being a webmaster. :D

But I don't use sugar. I sweeten my coffee with either a quarter teaspoon of molasses or a similar amount of honey which is about 7 times sweeter than sugar but metabolizes in your body a lot easier.

I don't put sugar on my cereal. I eat only whole grain unsweetened cereals and I put about a teaspoonful of "Super Reds" over it, along with 1% milk. Super Reds is a berry extract in powder form and it adds a great flavor to the milk and cereal. Sugar is not missed one iota here.

Pure unsweetened fruit juice too, I drink some every day.

Have no idea how close I'd be to that 15g per day thing, but I know I'm not as far from it as most people. Nor am I as fat as I could be if my diet wasn't what it is. As luck would have it I actually like healthy foods.

You would be far over the 15g just in your breakfast.

Exactamundo.

With a Smitty breakfast, I would guess that you'd still be at least 2-3 times your daily 15g allotment in a single meal based on the description of his Canadian meal plan.

Yes but my point was I avoid any and all refined sugars, prefering natural stuff, honey, fruit etc, to sweeten things that need sweetening.

I know people who dump anywhere from two up to 5 or more sugar packets into a single cup of coffee.

I don't crave the sweetness. A little goes a long way with me.

Probably. I never meant to imply I was even close, just that I'm confident that I'm closer to that goal than most people I know.

It's already been said in this thread that there's a huge difference between refined or the added sugars that go into most things, and the simple naturally occuring sweetness in natural source foods. I may be over, but not with the more complex sugars.

I'm happy with that.

There are gazillions (e)books on diets and pretty much all are contradictory. Right now the trend is about whole food and low carb diets and then it will switch to another fad. Cause diet/weight loss is a market and that they need new products or recycle old ones to keep selling. The only people benefiting from these diets are the people involved in that business. Most people who follow these strict diets feel/look actually miserable. Simply browse diet/wheight loss forums, where people follow these diets. Keep your diet balanced and have some regular excercises and you won't need to give up either meat, grains, fat or carbs.

I realize the difference in sugars, but this eating plan that Barefootsies is referring doesn't differentiate, its all sugars. Just that serving of milk you have with your cereal most likely has 12g of sugar, then you add in your honey and cereal and you're well over 25g, and that's just breakfast. Since you admittedly can't exercise like you want to because of your back, you're gonna have to make some changes if you want to get back to the weight you once were. (cue the photos that pimpdogg used to post of you)

It may not differentiate between the two. I do. So do most nutritionists I'll wager.

And pimpfool has his own set of life problems. Wouldn't trade mine for his for all the tea in China.

On a side note to lazycash:

Switching off of Diet Coke (aspartame) to SoBe and Zevia
as well as ground beef to turkey and chicken for different meals (substituting)

....has been an interesting enterprise. The taste difference is minimal. The texture a bit different in the end product. I suppose over time you see the results with a few grams here, and a few there in the changes in menu.
