Anybody else here live Gluten/Dairy Free?

I've been on Gluten Free/Dairy Free lifestyle for going on 2 months now. I feel like I'm 18 years old again inside. My brain is so clear and free to process thoughts. My sleep is the best I've had in 20 years. GI problems have just vanished, and my body feels like it is functioning at the optimum level again. My appetite has stabilized 100%. I attribute a lot of this to dumping sugar completely too. Exercising 4 times a week contributes, but I'm really understanding that what you give your body to burn as fuel is really the #1 thing and first place that you need to start.

Thinking of starting a G+ Group for sharing recipes and food type stuff.

Anyone else Gluten Free/Dairy Free?

My wife has to eat gluten free because she haas a gluten sensitivity, called celiac. If she eats gluten it tears up her GI. Gluten doesn't effect me at all, but I'm vegetarian, so we've been known to split a sandwich, horizontally, or a breakfast platter.

Corn tortillas are a staple in our house, as is oatmeal for breakfast. Corn and oats do contain a different kind of gluten which normally does not effect people who are allergic to wheat gluten. Fortunately my wife is in that category - corn and oats are fine for her.

that's what i was expecting to read when i clicked on this thread. You can get buy without gluten in foods, it's hard to keep any weight on but thats not really a bad thing either.

as for energy levels of the op, they are up because you are eating more vegetables and exercising more, not because you don't eat gluten and skipping dairy. I can run circles around you and I drink more milk than a frikken cow ;) Glad to hear you are getting good results though, keep it up.

.. you will unleash the wrath of dieters, they are like the new religious zealots.

The funny things is whether it is low-carb/ high fat , low-fat/ high carb, gluten free, vegetarian they all say the same thing: "Improved their health, improved their body composition, improved their energy levels blah blah blah" by avoiding this and not eating that.

Either one group is lying or they all feel a little bette simply because they start paying more attention and consume less junk

When it was discovered I had celiac, I switched to a diet of green salad and fish. Lost 30 pounds in three weeks, do not feel hungry anymore (I used to be hungry all the time, no matter how much I ate), have more energy and I'm no longer lactose intolerant.

If this keeps up I'm afraid I'll start looking like Christian Bale in The Machinist.

I get the calcium my body needs through diet. A lot of the foods I consume on a regular basis are high in calcium. Collard Greens, Soy Milk, Almond Milk, Almonds, Kale, Black Eyed Peas, are all great sources of calcium. The dairy marketing industry always uses calcium as their big reason to consume dairy products, but it's largely just marketing. There are tons of things to eat that give you the calcium you need that are not dairy.

I think everything is an individual choice. If it makes you feel better do it. If it doesn't then don't. I don't buy into anything anyone tells me. I'm a try it and see if I like it person.

For me personally, I'm feeling better than I every have. I'm putting on muscle, and losing fat. Granted most of that is from doing kickboxing and circuit training 4 times a week and cutting all refined sugar out of my diet. However, there is something to be said for not eating processed foods. If I don't put chemicals, dies, FDC colors, preservatives, etc into my body, then by body doesn't have to figure out what to do with them, and it doesn't end up in my blood.

People can think as these choose for what they feel is right for them. I'm not here to convert anyone from eating their McDonalds.

Also, another thing that I did not mention in my original post was killing caffeine. Caffeine was wreaking havoc on my adrenal glands and my nervous system was pissed off for a long time. About 3 weeks into no caffeine my anxiety completely subsided and I came down about 10 notches on worrying about things. Again, worked for me. If you need or want to keep consuming caffeine, rock your socks off. Hehe.

Eh, tried it, stopped putting sugar in my coffee but I can't go without bread for too long. Also flour is great you can make pizza and pancakes with it

I run 60km a week so I'm fairly healthy as is.

This past weekend I hooked up with a friend I hadn't seen in the past twenty years. She tells me she lives Gluten Free because she's allergic to wheat or grain or something. It's horrible - she can only eat salads really. Anything else gives her pain.

Odd way to live.

Luckily, no. The cross-country trip I did in July with my cousin was as close as I hope to get to being Gluten free. He is Celiac so mandatory gluten free. We stopped at a place in MN for dinner. They had a local fish that was their specialty, unfortunately it came breaded. We talked to the manager and they baked it sans the breading. When the waitress brought the plate, there was a piece of bread on it that contaminated the entire meal for him, and they had to start over.

It was tough trying to find somewhere to eat that we could both enjoy. Luckily, we found a great micro brewery in WY that had gluten free pasta and found a bar in the middle of nowhere MT that carried Budweiser's gluten free beer. Turns out their gluten free beer is the best tasting beer they brew.

Thats 100% bullshit. Salads only. I eat like any other human, just sans the gluten. Your friend is missing out on real food if she thinks that is all she can eat and be gluten free.

I'm not, but have been paying a lot more attention to what I eat for the past fee months. Feel much better, and when I slip up and eat some kind of crap again I can really notice the difference.

Gluten free foods taste, feel, and look like shit. Unless you are a magician and spend hours figuring it out and the sourcing products from local mom and pops that grow their own shit and manufacturer it you are getting gluten. Glutens in EVERYTHING, hell half the time they don't even list it, but it's in there.

Odd way to live.
Avoiding processed foods, that's the start. I have been doing that for years now.

Let me tell you, I don't eat meat, I don't eat gluten. You know what? I feel amazing as ever. I can't even imagine walking into a McDonalds or Chick fi le or whatever that place is. When I was in Vegas, I broke down and had cheese. Never again. I felt gross.

When I first started I felt socially odd. I tried to go vegan right away, but it was socially too difficult. Once I removed myself from the social situations causing the issues, it became easier. Then I started going back out after that, and its all good now. Its a lifestyle. It may look like a horrible life on the outside, but on the inside, its far from it.

Of course there are people that make a stink about how I eat, but more than that, I get people hitting me up asking for advice. That happens more now than ever, particularly after Forks over Knives adapted China Study to film.

I'm glad you are feeling better Eric. Hit me up if you ever have questions. We found this place called A Good Habit, its close to over here and very good.

Thanks. Actually you were one of the people who I watched do it and got me considering it. You probably don't know that, but I could see how healthy you looked, and hearing you gush to everyone how good you felt, I started experimenting with it about a year ago. Off and on. Felt great while on, felt terrible when I went back to processed garbage. I don't see myself going back to that ever at this point. Our house is completely purged of nasty, and our habits have formed for the good. I don't even crave garbage anymore.

Exactly. It's very easy to eat gluten free if you want to. I could care less about converting anyone, my post was to attract others that practice, but this is GFY, so you will always have the experts who know "everything" about "all" chiming in.

Just for Giggles: Here are two of my lunches this week. Gluten and Dairy Free and freaking delicious.

Looks like it tastes nasty huh?

I'm not 100% dairy free, but have cut way down on it.
I've substituted in almond milk and soy milk (the original, not that nasty vanilla flavored gunk)
My wife and I use vegan cheese for a lot of our recipes and we go meatless on Mondays and have cut meat down to becoming side dishes rather than main courses. By bulking up on the veggies, cutting down the dairy, meat and bread, we're both feeling better.

I packed on some pounds when she was pregnant and just made some simple changes like those and lost 30 pounds and more importantly, have kept it off.

I still enjoy a good buffet and steak house once in awhile, but that has become a treat rather than a regular dining pattern.

I haven't gone gluten free, but have reduced the amount I consume. I'm 42 and don't have the metabolism I once did but have found I don't have to go the extreme diet route, just make a few changes, add more walking and exercise into my day and I've been feeling like I'm in my 20s again.
