There is a very good reason to do sets when you excercise. And it has nothing to do with resting or recovering...and everything to do with getting bigger and stronger.

If you fully rested and recovered between sets you would be back to zero on working that muscle.

And yeah, I know you're just saying that sets don't count in how many pullups can you do in a row without stopping. I was just pointing out what sets really mean.
incorrect.. big guys will take 2-3 mins in between sets when going heavy, and this has been proven over and over again to be the most effective for strength gains and building size. It depends on your goals but short rests are generally for endurance/cardio purposes not gains.

oh. i can do 20 or so.. i normally strap on weights instead of doing more, got up to 65lbs or so but can probably only do 25lbs if i went in there today. doing reps of more than 20 is mostly jerking off...

I will try and see how many I can do if i set my mind to it. I guess it is a great upper back workout. As Robbie said, I did the wide grip ones, over hand on the bar. Although I suspect the underhand grip close to the chest is also hard..lol
you are a bit taller are you not? They are way easier to do for shorter guys like me but don't let that discourage you from doing them. Even if you start with the pully bar on the universal it is a start. It does your whole back, shoulders and arms and will help your overall posture so I can't stress this enough that this is an absolute essential movement. wide grip closed grip.. its all fine as long as you switch it up every now and then.

Couldn't have said it better. Take 15 seconds between heavy squat or deadlift sets and let me know how ya make out!

I can do 15, but what I typically do is 10 pullups, rest .30 and then switch my grip and do 5 more.

Results are 3 pullups. Struggled and barely did the third one.

Maybe some guys do that...but the BIG guys like Dorian Yates, Ronnie Coleman, etc, say differently in their articles that I've read when I was learning to work out correctly.
It's about exhausting a muscle. And doing pullups just doesn't require that kind of rest period.

Yeah...maybe doing super heavy squats or massively heavy bench. But doing pullups? No way you would rest 3 minutes. You might as well just go home.

I agree with you to a point. I said that for effect. My point was ONLY that doing 20 pull-ups is exactly that, you can do 20. Further, it assumes correct form, doesn't specify the type of pull up (wide grip, narrow, over hand, under hand etc) so everyone is commenting on what are likely very different things as well.

Pull ups are primarily about anaerobic endurance, not strength/power. Lifting weights for maximum muscle growth and doing body weight exercises are very different things.

I do pull ups training for climbing/bouldering.

6x20 reps, front, reverse and pistol grips. All wearing a dipping belt with 35kg weight attached.

from what i can remember dorian yates always did heavy low sets and reps with plenty of time between sets. maybe when he was cutting he did higher reps and less rest.

Except its not about exhausting the muscle on every single set. High rep work with little rest also induces sarcoplasmic hypertrophy (pump/volumizing effect of the muscle and is temporary), not myofibrillar hypertrophy. Myofibrillar is what grows the muscle.

A pull up is a compound movement not a concentration movement, they are very different. You would want to rest a minimum of 30 seconds between pull up sets especially if you're going to failure each time. Weighted pull ups are a whole nother ball game

Yeah, I've never done weighted pullups.

Doing 8 per set overhand/wide grip is tough enough.

I'll see smaller guys at the gym (talking height/weight, not muscularity) who hop up there and just pound 'em out. Especially the shorter guys with short arms.

I'm 6' tall and 210 pounds with long arms. It's tough on me (but then again I only train back muscles once a week and not to total failure like a bodybuilder would).

Then again, I'm friends with some massive dudes who are super strong and bench press weight I can't even budge off the bar. But they weigh over 300 pounds and can't do any pullups at all. lol

You know the kind...the guys who seem to only care about one body part and just hit the bench press and arms every time they go to the gym.

I was under the impression pullups are one of the 3 best and most effective exercises you can do.

push up
pull up
dead lift

do those 3 exercises properly and effectively and you can toss all the joe weider magazine selling bullshit out the window.

Oh I know those types all too well Robbie! Squats for days! I wouldnt put a pull up over a squat.

Bench
Squat
Dead

Its smart to incorporate body weight movements in your routines, but they can only take you so far with your strength and physique. You need progressive overload.

zero lat work, etc. , I'm surprised you poopoo pullups instead choosing to overwork other muscle groups via squats and deads.

@dynamo, hmmm...I never really considered the deadlift for a round ass.

Always squats and lunges. Guess I'm gonna have to rethink that one.

Warmed up I can do about 15-17 unweighted pull-ups with hands facing out (I always thought hands facing in were cheat pull-ups since you use a lot of bicep).

Your numbers are unusual. A person who can do 8 pull ups usually can do way more than only 25 push ups.

This is proof you can't do it, you bet 1K , why add some stupid shit to it that you know you can't have someone hold. If your poor ass can't afford a room and a rental bump it up to 2K. You have someone in your family that has done everything too. Just because they look like you doesn't mean they are family.

It's a good thing girls hate guys with muscles and prefer flabby Daddy types.

You guys do realize you are working out to impress other men, right?
