It depends on a lot of things. There's no way to prepare for how evil an ex can be. I've seen amazing marriages last forever, I've seen peaceful splits and I've seen people commit murder-suicides when it was split time because they were not prepared for how cold the world can get instantly... I'm not joking.

Think about that before you do it. You do not need to be married to be with someone forever.

I became pretty upset reading all the comments in this thread, it makes me wonder if all men are so selfish* and lack trust in themselves**?

* its all about what "stuff" you can lose if you divorce. If I would get divorced the last things I would worry about would be the "stuff" , the properties (I worked for) the neat cars (I worked for) : I would worry about I won't be able to be there for my kids on a daily basis anymore and that maybe there will be a totally stranger guy stepping in my home telling my kids how to live their lives, who would later maybe share their secrets with this guy Not Me!

Nah i don't give a shit about cars etc aswell. Take it. Material things don't really mean shit to me these days. My mindset has changed the past year or so. For the better.

As was said, the woman usually gets the best deal if marriage breaks down when it comes to the kids. Almost every time.

So by gain i don't mean i got married because i actually hoped or thought i'd gain something out of it.....but just rather question why bother with the fuss, cost in the first place.

My wedding was fine. Vegas, so was part of our vacation.

A wedding here though costs fucking silly money. For what one day ? Then before you know it the amount of people i know that had their "dream wedding" are now seperate...

It had high costs here as well, but we did it as 35ish adults not 20ish kids. It did worth the cost to see all our friends from all 'episodes' of our lives at one place together, feeling fine. There was 120 ppl there, approx 25 kids. We hired entertainers so parents can have fun, and paid for their rooms so they can drink and stay at the same very nice place until next noon, when we had 'afterparty' in our own house with those who wanted to stay for longer. Nothing really special happened there, but it was superb to just simply 'be with these people' , drink, smoke, have fun..

There are hard times in every marriage, and it is always easier to step out and look for a better life out-of-marriage, but I never went for the easier way ever in my life. I was close to want to 'divorce' a few times in my past, and I am SO FUCKING HAPPY I did not divorce but worked out all the issues.

had so much shitty relationships and affairs with psycho bitches in my 20s I just got 0 nervous system left by the time I got to my 30s... and moral quality / brain capacity of people is just getting worse year by year xD few generations back a good loyal woman might made one's life easier / happier, I think these days it's just pure fucking stress and a varied mixture of emotionally underdeveloped people's mental illnesses and all the chaos that's caused by those... most of them end up divorcing and hating each other so I think it's completely pointless these days, who needs that mess...

only motivation left is having kids like it's one of the most ancient instinct to reproduce who the hell want their bloodline to extinct... it's scary to think of

As for child support it depends on many factors, mostly how well the husband/dad was doing at the time of the divorce. The courts expect the children to maintain the same lifestyle even after daddy leaves (or is kicked out). So maybe your friend lives in a low-income society or just married a broke-ass loser. There are plenty of stories of ex-husbands' financial lives being ruined by divorce.

lol, true say. when I was born in the 70's, my parents married cuz otherwise my dad wouldn't have been permitted to be listed as my father on my birth certificate

another big reason is citizenship/ability to travel on a work permit

only reason me and my ex got officially married (we had been living as partners for years, happily) was because he got a job in Turks and Caicos and I wouldn't have been able to go with him unless I was his legal spouse. you need a work permit to live in that nation and 'common law spouse' isn't a category

same deal with my Jamaican citizenship, I got that because my husband is Jamaican, otherwise I wouldn't have fit the criteria to immigrate/attain citizenship without a ton of hassle and expense

but in general I agree, love doesn't need a piece of fucking paper

our wedding rings were recycled beaten silver purchased off etsy for like $40 each

we eloped in Toronto before leaving Canada so our entire wedding costs were $200 for the marriage license and $8 for round trip subway fare to and from city hall. we got married in jeans and hoodies

but yeah, we were really happy...until we weren't. even though we were both conscious of the risk, over time the marriage did end up affecting our relationship. my advice would be, if you don't have to for some practical reason, don't do it

I remember sitting getting pissed drunk in the casino downstairs in the Cosmopolitan hotel in Vegas with my best man (Ross on here) just 30mins before i was due to get married. We had met a group of people from Miami or somewhere and while the girls where up getting ready for hours, we were like "we can get ready in an hour so...."

I remember the people we met were like "there's no way you are getting married today (i was still in shorts and t shirt in the casino) and yeah was about 15mins to go when we were like "shiiiiiiiit we really gotta go here and get ready and shit".

So yeah 15-20mins later all suited and good to go but fucking pissed drunk

Vegas was as busy as i have ever seen it in my life because it was fight week between Mayweather and Pacquiao. Was chaos.

Fortunately not but this is what married gents have told me to do "just in case". Hey, if the marriage works out then spend that money on a European vacation or something nice for an anniversary.

But if the shit hits the fan and she takes everything, or attempts to, at least you have some cash backup. A safe deposit box (not in the same bank you use jointly) is a big help.

We had met a group of people from Miami or somewhere and while the girls where up getting ready for hours, we were like "we can get ready in an hour so...." I remember the people we met were like "there's no way you are getting married today (i was still in shorts and t shirt in the casino) and yeah was about 15mins to go when we were like "shiiiiiiiit we really gotta go here and get ready and shit". So yeah 15-20mins later all suited and good to go but fucking pissed drunk Vegas was as busy as i have ever seen it in my life because it was fight week between Mayweather and Pacquiao. Was chaos.
