Getting ripped and getting big and ripped are very different. Its possible but obviously the old you get the harder and more recovery time you need.

I mean this is a very basic basic workout routine -

It all comes down to the amount of calories hes taking in at the end of the day. Your body cant grow unless you give it the fuel. diet is 90% of the game the other 10% is your training. All in all it easy to push weights around, but to be consistent with diet takes discipline.

b12 really works? i hear both sides.

Anyway i would suggest working out 5 times a week. A cardio workout. So you can go heavy, but not max. I would sugest pyramiding your sets.
4 sets of an exercise...12 reps, 10, reps, 8 reps, 6 reps....increasing weight each time.
Do not take breaks in between sets.

So you are getting a cardio workout as well as lifting.

in my experience, your friend will not put on any new muscle after 40 without serious supplementation.

however, with a solid workout schedule and seriously proper diet he can gain back any muscle he maight have had when younger due to muscle memory. but after 40, the amount and quality of time away from the gym is even more important.

and it does in fact take years, as it does when under 40.

Muscle memory will only get you so far when your test levels are in the crapper....

and test is one of only a handful of hormones that *adjust* after 40- gh and insulin, there's another major one i can't recall the name atm, hmmn, anyhoo, all crucial to growth.

Without the testosterone you don't have the nitrogen retention to gain and hold onto mass. Low test levels = minimal muscle memory gains. In the grand scheme of things we are probably splitting hairs...either way I suggest your friend get blood work done before doing anything.

oh, gotcha, you're saying even with memory, the gains are hard to come by. that makes sense to me. i know i had other things going on that limited my growth, insulin being the primary one. but the hormone mix, from what i've learned, has to be spot on to get those cascading effects into nitrogen balance and all that bb science.

I'm 45 ... 190 pounds, muscular and ripped.

I work out 6 times a week. (4 days upper body and 2 days legs ... abs 4 days a week. + cardio)
Important things: Food, Training, Supplements (Creatine, BCAA's, Protein, pré workout ...) Rest and Sleep.

I spend aprox 1300 euros a month at supplements and food (only for me).

Took me years of intense power training .

How do you do that? I mean how do you find time for that? I dont get it...

Do you only work a few hours per day in adult? Otherwise its impossible.

Prepating + Working out + taking a shower = At least 3 hours free time per day... You have 3 hours free time for that?

Not to name the time you need to eat to sleep, and everything else. When do you work?..

Creatine will make you bloat so you cant get ripped, either way only way to get ripped like the op asked is to lower your body fat.
The main way to do this is through diet.
Afterwards if you want to have muscles to show you can do an excercise or weight lifting program.

BTW I forgot one thing.

Disipline. I NEVER skip a training.
I don't eat french fries, no unhealty fat, no rubish food, -> ONLY HEALTH FOOD.

Only one day in the weekend I have a refeed-day (not a cheatday). Then I eat one dish that I like.

It's a way of living. Not for everyone.

Preaching to the choir my friend I eat 5k cal a day in bulk phase...and currenltly eating 2lbs of chicken or grass fed beef a day minimum. I never spend over 600 dollars...current stats - 5'7 186lb @ 7.8% bodyfat currently. Dont take protein powder, I use liquid egg whites which are pasturized and 100% bioavailable 1 quart = 125G protein and drink one a day. Creatine...I eat enough meat to get my creatine intake, find no reason to supplement it. BCAA's ill utilize during fasted cardio sessions only...found very little difference in my training sessions taking them vs not. Refeeds on Sundays usually "carb up" day if you will not 100% strict but im already low enough BF so I can splurge a little. Its a lifestyle thats for sure.

Sleep (8) workout (3) work (10) ... Then I still have 2 hours free time.

what are your thoughts on the op's wanting to start to gain muscle after 40? have you noticed your gains changing as you moved into your 40s?

I agree, Have been in the gym for 15 years. Snake oil don't work.
But steroids sure do. Look around your local gym, their is a reason why dudes are 300lbs
and its not from bullshit you see on tv. lol

Well I'm in europe. Where I live food is expencive.
200 gr chickenfillet .. something like 3 euros. Maybe a bit more. 200 gr fish 6 euros. 10 eggs 2.6 euros or something.

Ofcourse you don't have to buy the most expencive fish in the market. But I don't give a fuck. I buy what I like

i will be 47 in 4 weeks. I started when I was 45 and couldnt bench 125 pounds. Now i bench 340. I lift weights i could even think about lifting 10 years ago.

Trainer, Diet, and Creatine is all i do

im not massive and if my diet was cleaner i would be way more ripped but im as big as i want to be and my 33 y/o gf seems to like it ;)

Most steroids and bio-identical hormones are dose dependent with respect to their effects on the body, as are any possible side effects (though in most cases genetics play a very strong role) and you should stop talking. You will never prove HGH is harmful in supplemental quantities.

I do agree with the suggestion of doing HGH/Steroids is not recommended at all...in fact youd probably end up getting hurt in the long run due to your muscles getting stronger much faster than connective tissues (tendons, ligaments)

Perhaps.. But you must understand 99.9% of people that take shit never see a doctor.
nor do they do any extensive research. Making stupid recommendations on any forum... well is just stupid. Before the user knows it... its too late. I'm not telling anyone not to use. Hell.. I did it myself many times and many people do with no problems. But not everyone is the same. And without being monitored by a doctor is like playing Russian roulette with your body. And recommending HGH to a novice is just plain stupid.

It could be dangerous if you take stupid amounts of it. And it's definitely not the 'most dangerous shit you can take'. Stallone has been abusing the fuck out of it for years, and is doing fine.

In normal doses you will only get the benefits with zero side effects. It will make you look and feel like a greek God.

It's exactly the same stuff your body produces naturally. Only your body slows down it's production with time, and by supplementing you are just getting it back to good levels.

Of the two of us, i'm willing to bet i'm the only one that used it for years. It's regularly prescribed... all over the nation in hormone replacement therapy,.. its regularly prescribed even to children. You're a fucking moron. When people abuse it, they are using 5-10X as much as they should. Even then, there are rarely side effects and when bodybuilders are using HGH... they are stacking it with other steroids. Not using it on its own.
