Hi Emil, Yep I have def learned that eggs, beef and chicken are ok and should not have made the list. Especially eggs. Guess noone buys the cholesterol argument anymore

Ill be honest. I needed 20 and was too tired to change them PLUS there are a few vegetarians or quasi veg like Howard Stern who dont eat beef and now HS gave up chicken too.

So Phil and I agree chicken and beef are ok and I dont plan on giving them up (altho my brother preaches turkey turkey turkey (ground).

He also goes here http://doctoroz.com/ and claims this guy has the answers. Seems to.

Indeed the only vites ya need (I feel) are Vit C (chewable is best) 1 gram min/day, 2 grams (2000 mgs) is best and maybe a chewable multi. And I like a little ACVinegar too. Not a vite but a suppliment. But then I am not training or anything either.

I once took a ton of vites but hate swallowing all them. Chewable is all Ill do now days.

It's not impossible to eat whatever you want to.
I do cook ALL my own foods 100% from scratch and let me tell ya I am in the kitchen 3+ hours sometimes so yeah. Cooking is exercise.

Good idea tho. Slice up a potato or sweet potato or carrot with a good slicer and add a little seasoning, Mrs Dash for example has no salt. Bake them and yeah, no oil or very little and you control salt* if you make them thick cut and brush on just a tinch of olive oil maybe.

But congrats. That is going the extra mile and that is what you have to do to lose/keep pounds off.

* excess salt I get in corn chips or taco shells or salted in the shell peanuts (plus I add salt to stuff) probably is putting water weight on.

If I could watch proper sodium intake for maybe two weeks and (maybe) take a dielectric^ like Pamprin (can guys take that? Ive heard it recommended to flush water) I could prob lose 10 LBs in two weeks on that only.

My brother spelled it all out for me. He gets all his knowledge from Doctor Oz. He claims: ground turkey, oatmeal, dried fruits, tuna, canned beans (all the usual good stuff) NO CORN SYRUP or SUGAR and LOW SODIUM being KEY and counting cals AND sodium ESPEC is the way.

He actually washes his canned beans and canned veg under water to remove sodium.

Makes sense, he is lean and mean.

^ Wait "a dielectric is an electrical insulator". You know what I mean

You say protein is good, then you list all common forms except tuna as bad. I think it's important to eat good foods in moderation. You can't survive off blueberries alone, but that doesn't mean they aren't good to include in your diet. By the same token, don't eat a dozen eggs a week. But you can certainly have a few a week as a good source of omegas and protein. Support your local chickens!

For some of us, SUGAR is the hardest thing to give up or replace. Corn syrup is somehow easier, prob cause it is more nausiating if you go over the very short limit. Yet it is all a mind game and if we were unaware of it we would prob not even miss it. Honey is good to have around.

Want endorphins and a "quick high" and "short lived lift" AND crap in your teeth OR want to be skinny? That simple. You'll get endorphins when the ladies look at you (me) again.

And teeth are good

Agreed Moderation is the word for the day.

And yeah the chickens have their defenders in this thread lol

Dont f with the chickens But I hear ya. Simple carbs, like pasta, and oils like dressing and corn chips (if eating too many which is like only 10 or so) are the real prob.

Proteins are good in almost any quantity. Cause after a while (Atkins Diet) you begin to crave carbs if all you have is protein. Can really only eat so much protein as the body doesnt seem to crave it the same as carbs.

Mind over matter. First you get educated. Then you do it

Actually I do eat about a dozen a week I scramble or fry 12 at a time in 1 TB of canola oil and 1 TB of butter (friend says use grapeseed oil.. is great for frying eggs.. gonna try that) and then refrig and eat 3 at a time out of the micro 4 days straight.

So that isnt good? Phil had 30 today lol I'm confused. But we all arnt Phil. And yeah maybe 3 eggs a day (dozen or more a week) is too many. That is all I have that meal but lots of cholesterol.

That's a ton of eggs, wow. I would say one a day would probably be a good limit. How about having scrambled eggs for breakie twice a week (but still 3 eggs per portion) and then a fried egg on the weekend? The other days you can have a yogurt smoothie with fruit or a whole grain cereal like oats or granola?

There's nothing wrong with oil based dressings. Those are the healthy ones. The cream-based ones are the dressings with too much fat and thickeners. I would avoid all the bottled stuff as a general rule, though. When you make a salad, just mix up in a jar some olive oil, balsamic vinegar or red wine vinegar, salt, pepper, and an herb like parsley. Throw in a spot of sugar and some poppy seeds if you like. Shake it up and apply to your salad! It keeps in the fridge for about a week, just reshake before you use it again.

Sugar is lovely in small quantities. It's a key ingredient in most baking. It's healthier in the long run than the synthetic replacements like Splenda or SweetnLow. I think they key is to avoid eating products that include unneccessary sugars. ie: don't reach for a full-sugar soda, have water or tea or coffee instead. If you really need a sugar hit, pour a glass of REAL juice and feast on the natural sugars.

This leads me to a rant of mine: cheat foods. You know that cookies don't fit in your diet. What makes people think that replacing one ingredient (like sugar with splenda) will suddenly make cookies ok? It's far better to go get a nice bakery-fresh cookie and ENJOY IT than to snack on those cardboardy "diet friendly" 100calorie cookies that serve absolutely no purpose. The point is to focus on REAL ingredients that you can use in your own kitchen. Nothing you can't pronounce or can only find in a lab.

Hope that helps!

This is why ya gotta at least walk if ya dont run. I remember reading in the 70s about a guy who began jogging and basicly runners can eat chocolate cake cause their systems are so efficient.

What was his name.. Older guy in his 40s. He would write on the meditative benefits of long distant jogging and how you could eat anything. Not Jim Fixx but around that time. Used to go to the public library and get his books. He was a great author on the solitude of running and especially on his first runner's high and how it changed him. Think his name was Jack S...

So if ya want to eat the junk and be a slim "middle aged man" ya have to walk I guess. Or vacuum/dust/houswork. When ya got 2x energy and 4x housework ya cant really exercise. I guess you could but at the beginning ya might sleep too much...

The number one change was actually 2, gluten free and smoking. Once I was able to go completely chemical free, it took a year, you actually feel like a kid again. I have more physical and mental energy then I know what to do with.
Nice post JC Appreciate it. I also learned long ago that gluten (a part of the refind wheat flour in bagles and cheap bread) is terrible for you. Gives me big heartburn and puts weight on easily.

No dairy is amazing. As I said I buy the 24 oz block of chedder and go thru that in about a week WITH some shredded too. How I dont know but it goes. I LEAN hard on cheese as being easy. But I am turning into a huge chunk of cheese lol

Pork went huh. My friend says pork is bad. Due to the whole worm thing. Coffee I quit (in favor of no-doze lol so no gain there Well some gain: No bathroom trips and better teeth.) I am with ya on all processed foods are gone (except sugars, corn syrups (for now) ) A little red licorice left THEN maybe no more

Can I do it. No candy

I remeber walking as a kid up the alley 3 blocks to a place called Macs. Old guy with a lil store with a TON of penny candy. With one thin dime Id get 10 or sometimes more asst pieces in a bag (with a twizzler sticking out ) As most of us, Candy and I go back and deep down I love it but it doesnt love me.

twizzler
black jack
dubble bubble or bazooka
pixie stick (sometimes)
tootsie roll
laffy taffy (banana)
some 2 for 1cent
fives (with the little tiny malted milk balls)
only up to 8 cents and I forget what else lol.. it was about 40 years ago

But I would come back home in lala.. lalala land

So it is hard to say goodbye..

The little corner store in 1972 for me was Hanks. I would get my allowance (of 25 cents) and go buy a lollipop and maybe a balsa wood glider and something to drink.

Totally an "old man" story. Oh well.

The store is still there and open too, pretty good long life but that's small towns for you.

Pork worm thing: He claims if you set any piece of pork out for a couple hours then look at it closely it will have worms. I disagree as that was something of the past.

At any rate I eat Pork. It is f'n good bbq'd. And certianly cooking kills anything anyhow.

Kind of creepy I know but thought I better clarify what he means by worms. He is seldom wrong. Yowzers.

He must be wrong on this tho. If Im in Tenn or Texas I am eating some of that slow cooked pork bbq for sure.

Hanks LOL Yeah, we all had a little store and up till about 1975 penny candy was everywhere.

Yeah we are talking 1972 hehe My lil store, Macs was between many of our places and school so a ton of kids would go in and out of there all day everyday. Sweet guy with a white apron. Noone ever went in the back rows EVER to buy any groc. All anyone bought was candy, maybe cigs.

And everyone had a smart comment for Mac. What a life. Macs was gone by about 1990 when Mac died.

Candy was still cheap till about 1980. Nickle candy bars in 1972 were only a dime from 1975 till 1980. Then a quarter in the early 80s. I think

Excellent post . That does help.

(What I really need is a wife lol, women know this stuff. My friend's wife gives me good advice )

Excellent advice on the salad dressing. I was doing that a bit at one time. Good way to get a lil olive oil and vinegar. I didnt like the basalmic but the red wine vinegar is a winner.

Agreed, as I said creamy blue cheese (and lots of it ) got me off on the wrong foot way back in my mid 20's.

Ok fair enough on sugar. Agreed. It is certainly better than corn syrup. But buying gratuitous candies like black jacks and laffy tafffy is prob not ok for someone who binges.

I also told myself THREE pieces of candy a day is ok. But then I sleepwalk if I dont eat like 10 before bed. Seriously.

Homemade chocolate chip cookies are GREAT. I was less fat then too. Maybe baking a bit is ok. Phil, do you eat homemade choc chippers? lol I bet not Laffy taffy?

Remember as a kid eating Karo corn syrup on pancakes? Great. How did I do that? Oh yeah I went out and ran around all day

Anyhow, I cook everything from scratch incl some baking. Altho I can make choc chippers, I know the ingr for a homemade recipe by heart something says they will not allow weight loss BUT I hear ya about keeping it real is most important.

And IF you buy ONE cookie buy a good one and enjoy it. Quality over quantity for sure.

for a rare female poster in a thread of mine

So far today my diet:

Breakfast:
handful of crushed corn chips under
some seasoned taco meat (beef)
onions
shredded sharp chedder
Ortega Taco sauce
[a tostada! correct ]
Braggs ACVinegar in 12 oz tap water

Mid day snack: (right now)
Bowl of oatmeal I nuked (I cook 4 servings at once and refrig)
With about 2 tsp Smart Bal and a bit of honey 1 tsp
About 1 oz chedder on the side (protein )
A Budweiser (cause posting is stressful hehe)
A no-doze and an aspirin (instead of coffee (cause posting is work )

So far not bad.. long ways to go today

I need a nap and I am craving red licorice big time but I resisted. This is when I am in trouble when my blood sugar gets too low. I have to hang in there and wait for the oatmeal to kick in.

what a drag it is getting old.. i got dishes to do.. a ton of shit.. anyone got any cocaine? cannabis? white cross? meth? crack? lol

that should help me get through my busy day and be just great for my diet

actually dexedrine (white cross) IS good for my diet if I had some

ehh maybe not, cannabis will do

what a drag it is getting old

I disagree with some of that being unhealthy. I think a fair bit of it is based on the glycemic index BS which is just the stupid fad diet base of the last few years... Most people don't even really understand what it means. Worried about pasta being too high glycemic index - cook it less, now it will digest slower and be lower index... not that it really matters unless you are diabetic or need to "feel full" longer so that you don't stuff your gullet.
/ end glycemic index rant

Amazingly very FEW of you eat corn syrup. Congratz! Yeah you are pretty pathetic if you are eating 99 cent slices LOL

Of 53 voters:

Number one food eaten: Chicken (43) This is def a very savvy bunch. The second: Cheese (40) who can live without it hehe.

MSG (8) Nitrites (10) THIS is where I am fussier than some of you Yeah I ate a few Subways in my day but I always noticed I felt like a nap after. Who can resist Eggrolls tho right and choo choo beef and teriyaki chicken and fried rice and... Just dont ask me to post after. I will be out of it.. unless YOU have some better drugs to pull me out

Frozen Pizza (17) only 1/3 of you. I suspected you all would not be real impressed with that garb. It is mostly all garb. Yeah a couple arnt bad if you dont eat the crust.

this one's good

Mayo (21) um about 40%. Not real big on mayo either. Good to see. We all know that stuff is KILLER! and once again you be the dead one

sugar (26) hey ya have to have some I figure. Moderation tho. Maybe buy one candy bar and that is all. This is actually very low only 50% You are all very disciplined people.

corn syrup only (7) Homie dont play that corn syrup game Indeed. Ever eat Karo as an adult. How did we eat that stuff.

butter (24) Smart Balance (3) Homie dont play that Smart bal game either. hah! I am one of the three. It is nonhydrogenated.. Still arnt buying huh. This is good info to know. So you all basicly have toast and butter not toast and Smart Bal. Hmmm.

Pasta (31) This is fairly high White Flour (21) hmm 10 of you wont touch WF but will touch pasta. Same thing. Pasta may be worse But ok. I hear ya. Big Italian contingent (Juicy lol j/k) in the voting base LOL

I better hit submit

Agreed. It is complicated shit. It really is. I actually minored in "Community Health" with Engineering as a major. Dont ask me why. It was the early 80s and I had Pat Benatar on my mind

But I am a bigger dummy than most young people who seem to have a grasp on this stuff. Back then they didnt know much tho in terms of PRACTICAL nutrition.

In the 70s margarine was considered good and butter bad. Certainly hydrogenated oils ARE the worst thing you can eat for real. Clogs the arteries ect. Vice versa olive or grapeseed or even cannabis (hemp) oil is actually very good for you. Think it is legal in Canada.

Are you trolling? Because it doesn't take much common sense to tell that you need to:
1) clear out your kitchen and fill it with only healthy options
2) Stop pre-cooking everything and heating up later. It makes eating TOO EASY.
3) stop mixing your drugs. A beer makes you dozy, so you take a no doze and then an aspirin chaser? come on.

About oatmeal: don't buy the instant stuff. That's like oatmeal puree. Buy the big flakes, it will be called Steel Cut or Scottish or Rolled Oats. You can still microwave it, no worries. Just heat up with water and a splash of brown sugar or honey and some fruit for 45 seconds on high, covered - stir - do another 45 seconds covered, then let sit for a minute before adding some milk.

Eat plenty of dark chocolate. Very good for the heart/CVS and lowers your risk of stroke dramatically. I have sacks of it in my cupboards. Also, eggs are now considered generally good for you (including yolks). Just watch your total saturated fat intake.

And yes, I am a certified GFY nutritionist.

Nope I never troll. Well maybe a lil for entertainment

1) I agree with you here and this is my basic strategy and thus I want to see what you all think is healthy (or not)

2) Well that is true I guess. Cant really argue and good point. But I also have to do all the other stuff in life so altho I am lazy today Mon-Wed I was working all day on stuff. You have to save time when as Alice said, "I'm still on my own"

3) Naah I am 6'3" 308 so one beer does nothing. It just seemed like what I wanted at the time for taste. In the kitchen I go on auto pilot when hungry.. bad I know. One Aspirin is just cause I like to keep the blood thinned. No doze is no diff than coffee without all the riggamarole and more efficient and cheaper.

Good info on the oats. So steel cut is not the same as cheap whole oats? Both are pretty cheap I guess.

I once asked the health guys here this and they said any whole oats is good.

Not to argue but here most stuff does not contain msg. A few things but only processed stuff. I'm sure a few folks never read lables.

The other day Doritos was the free item if you buy $30. I am sitting looking at every variety of Doritos. ALL 10+ varieties contain MSG but they look great. Buffalo blue cheese, all these great flavors.

Suddenly a kid about 19 comes along. Mom says, "what do you want" kid grabs one in two seconds. Lots of people dont care about MSG.

BTW they tasted great but I threw them after a few. I know should have donated them but my money and I wanted to see if I could handle a little. Had only a few chips so they only fucked me up a little but I did take a nap after eating as always. They had BIG flavor tho. BIG flavor.

Steel cut should be the same as "whole" oats. Just don't buy the instant quaker packs is what I'm trying to say

MSG - in North America they can hide MSG by saying "spices" or "flavouring" in the ingredient list. http://www.rense.com/general52/msg.htm

Margarine/balance/whatever - liquid plastic. I would avoid it. Use olive oil or butter in moderation. Avoid the chemicals.

Not to sound like a nag, but will power is like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets. If you say no to the free Doritos, it will be easier to say no to the candy later. Then easier to say no to the chips again, say no to the afternoon beer, etc. YOu get the idea

Good luck with making your changes! It's tough, but oh so worth it!

Maybe you people should import your food from a different country that doesn't pump its livestock full of steroids, anti-biotics, and other chemicals.

Most of the food on your list isn't actually bad for you - unless you eat buckets of it each day. I'm tempted to go through your blue titled items and tell you how to prepare them - but I'm lazy.

The corn syrup, though - avoid that at all costs. When I was a kid, cor syrup was a premium item - even more rare than Maple Syrup in Canada. Now its in every fucking bit of box-food you buy.

"Box food" is anything that comes in a box, can, or bag. Don't ever eat any that of shit.

BTW - make your own mayonaise. It takes ten minutes. Just don't ever eat that shit - or anything else - out of a jar with label attached to it.

Its really not that hard to stop buying packaged crap.

Very opinionated poll!

Most of the foods on that list are only bad for you if eaten in excess. I like to stay away from processed foods in general opting for fresh whole foods with a good mix of everything.

You can tell me how to prepare them. MSG, Nitrites, white flour, pasta, corn chips The meats I can do Lot of meat eaters on GFY (posters). Not too many vegetarians which makes sense I guess.

Yeah folks really avoiding corn syrup. Only a few candy bars dont have any. One is (which I have a few fun sized bars around )..

only dark choc, sugar and coconut. Made by Hersheys and the only good bar Hershey has anymore

A site that I use and have recommended to friends in the past is http://www.myfitnesspal.com. It has free apps for your phones/devices and works really well in helping you become aware of what you take in compared to what you actually need. Eating 600 calories four hours after a meal? That's fine if you go out for a bike ride after... not watch tv

Big enough to maintain weight? What does that even mean? That's the silliest thing I've heard today. Luckily you're so big that a few thousand extra calories won't make you gain? Of course you're gaining!

Like I said, good luck with your challenge. True change starts with a change of heart or mind. Maybe you're not at the point yet where you actually want to change things.

*hugs* and good luck!

Hi Elli, What I mean was being a lil bigger I can have a couple hundred more maintainance cals than a guy 100 LBs lighter. Actually yesterday was a good thing as I only ate what was posted so I was actually under my maintainance cals for the day so posting all day in this thread was worth it

And a good thread as I learned that most of you have given up corn syrup completely so that is good to know.

I get a lil wacked out and stir crazy from being in this thread for almost 48 hours.

I am ready to lose and this thread is part of the process.

Hugs to you too and thanks for your kind comments and help. It is/was very much appreciated

(and sorry for missspelling your name. I swore it was an e and not an i hehe )

Today I've had 2 cups of coffee (1 more than usual), a large glass of water, some 0 calorie lemonade, 1 bowl of fried rice with protien and vegetables and garlic and such spices, and 2 cookies.

It's helpful to write down what you eat. Also how many reps of which exersize you do. Sometimes I just literally forget that I just ate something until I look at my notes, hehe.

That sounds like a pretty good effort

Agreed, I think the only way to consistently go in the right direction is to write it down or enter it in Lose It or in a WtWatchers log ect. Otherwise you are all over the place. Gonna see how LoseIt.com works.

I skipped TV last night, fell asleep and was hungry this am. THAT is important. The one thing I do wrong is eat before bed and wake not all that hungry. You have to wake hungry then eat something decent.

Easier said than done. But that really is the most important thing.. NOT eating a lot before bed. ALL my weight gain came from eating before bed.

I know what to do but doing it is sometimes a diff deal

Anyhow, good day to all and let today be a good day that takes us in the right direction

I had my usual Taco to start the day:

2-3 oz 93% lean ground beef
1 oz chedder
Heavy on the Vidalea onions
Taco sauce
Hard shell

Braggs ACV in water (no cals)

About 500 cals

Hugs to you too and thanks for your kind comments and help. It is/was very much appreciated

(and sorry for missspelling your name. I swore it was an e and not an i hehe )
I'm glad I could help. I apologize for being cranky in my previous post, that was uncalled for. Good for you for sticking to your plan!

For me today so far:
1 pink grapefruit
2 cups coffee
1 piece white bread toast w/ butter
1 small bowl of clam and asparagus linguine (leftover from last night)

I detected no crankiness at all. In fact your post made my day. I always think I am coming off like a deush on chatboards lol Maybe I do.

With no emotion indicators or voice inflection ect it is hard to "say what you mean and mean what you say" (as "they" (Serge the man ) says you should do)

Anyhow you're a sweetheart for caring

Quick and Easy Calorie Calculator

http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm

for me

Maintenance 2785
Fat Loss 2464

So that is quite a bit. Basiclly 2500 cals and I am losing. I CAN do this

I fig you are way less I need the 500 cals to start the day. LOL Me and fruit.. and I am hungry SOON

Time to start counting cals. Gonna see how Lose It works. They might add something the other old school counters like Wt Watchers dont. The Iphone way is best but since I am on the puter a lot the site may work well.

I'll let you all know.

Maybe we need a fat loss thread (or is this it ) where those of us can hang. hehe If you confess your sins eh maybe it will be easier to stick with the program and peer support is always good.

I am SURE I am not the only one carrying too much extra weight in this line of work.
